Process for the preparation of propenyl catechol monomethyl ethers As shown in patent 545 913 , one can from the mixture of i-eugenol and i-chavibetol, which is obtained according to claim 3 of patent 505 404, i-chavibetol by freezing and from the resulting liquor the Separate i-eugenol by converting it into the sparingly soluble sodium salt. When acidified, the lye that falls off provides an oil which corresponds to about 20% of the processed i-eugenol and i-chavibetol. Separating the two propenyl catechol ethers from it after freezing out any remaining i-Chav ibetol, however, does not succeed even with the help of the measures described above, so that the assumption of contamination by further, namely cis-, trans-isomeric compounds does not appear unjustified. However, as has been found, and this is the subject matter of the present process, surprisingly the goal is achieved if the mixture of phenols present is methylated and the exhaustively methylated reaction product is cleaved with alkali under heat. Both i-chavibetol and i-eugenol can now easily be obtained from the reaction mixture formed in this way by the process described in patent 545,913. This again results in about 20% of the starting material, an oil which no longer provides a crystalline product and which can be reprocessed to the two isomers in the manner described, expediently in connection with a new batch. It is not necessary to use the oil itself as a starting material; B. the methylation is carried out with the aid of dimethyl sulfate, proceed directly from the alkali formed after separation of the i-eugenol sodium.
Example According to the example of patent 545,913, after separation of the i-Chav ibetol and the i-eugenol from 100 g of a mixture containing both isomers, a lye which corresponds to about ao g of the starting material falls off. 16 g of dimethyl sulfate are added dropwise to this with stirring. The temperature rises to about 35 ', and the reaction product is deposited as an oil on the aqueous solution; by distilling the lifted and washed product, a pale yellow oil is obtained which boils from 142 to 1.1.6 ° at 13 mm. The yield is almost quantitative.
go g Ätzkali, go g Alkohol und go g des Methylierungsproduktes werden
Dann säuert man vorsichtig
Go g caustic potash, go g alcohol and go g the methylation product are heated to 140 ° for about 20 hours in a stirred autoclave. The alcohol is distilled off, the residue is taken up in water and the aqueous solution is washed out with ether to remove any dimethyl ether that has not been split. Then acidified carefully and takes the precipitating 01 with ether on. After the ether has been distilled off, the residue passes over during distillation in vacuo (13 mm) at 145 to z52 °. Yield about 80 g. From the distillate - i-Chavibetol crystallizes out on cooling. It is left to stand for some time at about 0 ° and then the i-cliavibetol is sucked off (about 25 g). 15% sodium hydroxide solution is added to the filtrate and, after standing for a while, the i-eugenol sodium which has crystallized out is filtered off with suction. You win by slurrying in water and acidifying. from the sodium salt the free i-eugenol (about 40 g). The remainder of the cleavage product remaining in the mother liquor of the N atrium salt is filled out by acidification and then returns to the process.
