Abstract

In the prodn. of high strength stainless steel having excellent proof strength (more than 35 kg/mm2 or up to more than 70 kg/mm2) as well as corrosion resistance, in a steel consisting (by wt.) of C (less than 0.03%), Si (less than 2.00%), Mn (less than 5.0%), S (less than 0.030%), Cr (16-20%), Ni (6-13%), N (0.25-0.28%), Nb (0.05-0.25%), B (less than 0.0020%), and Fe and impurities is heated to 950-1300 deg.C, rolled at finish temp. 900-1000 deg.C or 600-900 deg.C for increasing proof strength, while cooling rate after rolling is more than 4 deg.C/min and total working ratio is more than 30%, to have recrystallised fine structure. The steel rolled at finish temp. below 1000 deg.C and after cooling is subjected to low temp. solid soln. treatment at 900-1010 deg.C to have crystal grain number more than 7.5. The steel includes (1) Mo (less than 4%), Cu (less than 4%) and S (less than 0.005%) to improve corrosion resistance or (2) S (0.030-0.080%) and Se (0.005-0.080%) to improve machinability.
