Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a high-strength steel of improved weldability by working a low C-content steel at ≥30% reduction of area in a temp. range of Ar3 below prescribed temp., and quickly cooling the same in a phase deposition region on the way of cooling thereby providing the two-phase-layerlike structure of ferrite + martensite.
CONSTITUTION: A steel contg. 0.005W0.2% C, 0.3W2.5% Mn and ≤1.0% Si, respectively, is worked at Ar3 point below 930°C within a temp. range at which austenite grains are fined and the recrystallization progression of austenite stagnates considerably and at ≥30% reduction of area. Next, in the ferrite phase deposition temp. region on the way of cooling of the steel after said cooling, C is thickened in the untransformed austenite phase along with the deposition of ferrite phase. After 5W60% deposition as ferrite phase, the untransformed austenite of a high C concn. is quickly cooled, whereby the two-phase-layerlike structure of fine ferrite particles and martensite of a high apparent C concn. is obtained. As a result, the high-toughness, high-tensile steel of superior cold workability having ≥50kg/mm2 tensile strength is obtained.
