Description
Die Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung gewisser Verbindungen
als Schmiermittel für Nichteisenmetalle, insbesondere gewisser Polyglycole als Schmiermittel und/oder Kühlmittel für die
Bearbeitung von Nichteisenmetallen.
Zweck der Erfindung ist ein Schmiermaterial bei der Bearbeitung von Metallen vorzusehen, bei der ein Metall sich in beweglichem
Kontakt mit einem zweiten Metall befindet, wobei das erste Metall Nichteisenmetall ist.

In einer Hinsicht betrifft die Erfindung ein Verfahren zur Bearbeitung
eines Metalles, bei dem ein Metall sich in beweglichem Kontakt mit einem zweiten Metall und mit einem Schmiermittel
befindet, das aus einem Polyglycol besteht.
Eine besondere Anwendungsform der Erfindung ergibt sich bei
einem Verfahren zur Reduktion von Rohren aus Zirkonlegierung,
wobei das Rohr aus Zirkonlegierung sich in beweglichem Kontakt mit einem Dorn und einem Schmiermittel befindet und letzteres
aus Polypropylenglycol besteht. Weitere Ausführungsformen der
Erfindung ergeben sich aus der nachstehenden Beschreibung.
Wie erwähnt, betrifft die Erfindung ein Schmiermittel, daß bei
der Bearbeitung von Metallen benutzt wird. Obgleich Schmiermittel der nachstehend näher erläuterten Art besonders vorteilhaft
zur Verwendung bei der Bearbeitung von Nichteisenmetallen sind, versteht es sich, daß diese Schmiermittel mit Vorteil auch bei
der Bearbeitung von Eisenmetallen benutzt werden können. Die Metallbearbeitung kann verschiedene Formen annehmen, wie Ziehen,
Walzen, Auspressen, Schneiden, Bohren, Räumen, Stechen, Gewindebohren usw. Wie nachstehend noch näher dargelegt werden soll,
ist das Schmiermittel nach der Erfindung von besonderem Vorteil zur Benutzung beim Einziehen des Durchmessers von Rohren oder
ähnlichen Arbeitsgängen.
Abgesehen von der Aufgabe als Schutzmittel gegen Abnutzung und %
Anfressung muß das Schmiermittel die chemischen und thermischen Einwirkungen an der Grenzfläche aushalten, um die Bildung
von Abnutzungsspänen oder dergleichen, die sich schwer vom fertigen
Gegenstand entfernen lassen, zu vermeiden. Das Schmier-

mittel darf auch zu keiner Korrosion des Metalles oder Verfärbung führen, und es darf außerdem die Oberflächenstruktur des
Metalles nicht übermäßig verändern. Dieses Erfordernis ist besonders wichtig bei Zirkon und Titan, weil es dort erwünscht
ist, die Bildung einer offenen Kornstruktur zu verhindern. Um daher im Gebrauch wirksam zu sein, muß das Schmiermittel bei
der Bearbeitung des Metalles zu einem geringen Anfall an Bearbeitungsresten, einem kleinen Abnutzungsbereich und einer geringen
Oberflächenrauhheit führen, d.h. zu einem kleineren Anfall an Oberflächenmängeln, die zu der erwähnten offenen Kornstruktur
führen würden.
Wie erwähnt, ist die Verwendung gewisser Schmiermittel in der
Technik bekannt. Außerdem ist es bekannt, Glycole als Schmiermittel
zu verwenden. Diese Glycole werden jedoch nicht als solche benutzt, und sie finden auch keine Verwendung bei Nichteisenmetallen,
wie Zirkon. Die Glycole, die bei der Bearbeitung anderer Metalle, z.B. Eisenmetallen, benutzt werden, dienen
praktisch als Träger für andere Zusatzstoffe, die die eigentlichen
Schmiermittel darstellen. Im Gegensatz hierzu sind die Polyglycole, die gemäß der Erfindung benutzt werden, wirksame
Schmiermittel, und sie können als solche oder in Kombination mit einem Reibungsmodifiziermittel benutzt werden. Wenn man
Polyglycole der nachstehend genauer beschriebenen Art verwendet, ist es möglich, gewisse unvermeidliche und unerwünschte
Eigenschaften auszuschalten, die bei anderen Schmiermitteln vorliegen. Beispielsweise sind Mono- oder Diglycole, wie Propylenglycol,
Dipropylenglycol usw. von hygroskopischer Natur und

nehmen deshalb etwa vorhandene Feuchtigkeit, sei es aus der Luft oder aus der Oberfläche des zu bearbeitenden Metalles,
auf. Dadurch verändern sich die Schmiereigenschaften des Schmiermittels. Xm Gegensatz zu diesen Verbindungen können die
nach der Erfindung benutzten Polyglycole bezüglich ihres Molekulargewichtes
in einen weiten Bereich fallen, wobei die Grenze für das Polyglycol von niedrigem Molekulargewicht darin besteht,
daß es nicht hygroskopisch sein darf, während die Grenze für das höchste Molekulargewicht darin besteht, daß das nutzbare
Polyglycol flüssig sein muß und etwas Wasserlöslichkeit aufweist. Bei Benutzung eines Polyglycols, das wasserlöslich ist,
ergibt sich die Möglichkeit, eine leichte Reinigung durchzuführen, nachdem das Metall bearbeitet worden ist, indem man
das Arbeitsstück mit einem Strom aus Wasser oder Wasser mit einem Detergenssystem säubert. Ein anderer Vorteil bei der Benutzung
von Polyglycolen nach der Erfindung liegt darin, daß diese Polyglycole ungiftig sind im Gegensatz zu einwertigen
Verbindungen, wie Alkoholen, die einen gewissen Grad an Toxizität aufweisen.
Obgleich das Verfahren nach der Erfindung besonders anwendbar
bei der Bearbeitung von Zirkon, Titan oder deren Legierungen ist, versteht es sich, daß die Schmiermittel nach der Erfindung
auch mit Vorteil bei der Bearbeitung anderer Nichteisenmetalle, wie z.B. Aluminium, Kupfer, Messing, Bronze, Magnesium usw.,
benutzt werden können.
Beispiele von Polyglycolen, die als Schmiermittel beim Verfahren
der Erfindung benutzt werden können, sind Polyäthylengly-

cole und Polypropylenglycole mit einem Molekulargewicht im Bereich von etwa 400 bis zu etwa 2000 oder mehr. Polyglycole
von niederem oder höherem Molekulargewicht besitzen eines der vorstehend erwähnten Kriterien, wie Glycerin, sorbitartige
Polyole usw. Einige spezielle Beispiele der Polyglycolart, die
verwendet werden kann, sind solche, wie sie von der Union Carbide Company unter den Handelsbezeichnungen PPG-42S und
PPG-1025 gehandelt werden, sowie Polypropylenglycole, wie sie
von der Dow Chemical Company unter den Bezeichnungen P-400, P-1200 und Ρ-2Ό00 gehandelt werden. An diesen Handelsbezeichnungen
bedeutet die Zahl jeweils das Molekulargewicht des betreffenden
Polyglycols.
Es liegt auch im Rahmen der Erfindung, daß die Polyglycole in Vermischung mit anderen Ingredientien, wie Reibungsmodifiziermitteln,
benutzt werden können. Zu den letzteren gehören die verschiedenen Seifen, Detergentien enthaltend polyoxyäthylierte
Materialien, Säuren, wie gesättigte Fettsäuren einschließlich Ameisensäure, Essigsäure, Propionsäure, Buttersäure, VaIeriansäure,
Capronsäure, Enanthylsäure, Caprylsäure, Pelargonsäure,
Caprinsäure, Laurinsäure, Palmitinsäure, Stearinsäure, Behensäure usw.; ungesättigte Fettsäuren, wie Acrylsäure, Crotonsäure,
Isocrotonsäure, Tiglinsäure, Angelicasäure, Senecionsäure,
Hexensäure, Decylensäure, Dodecylensäure, Palmitolensäure, Ricinolsäure, Oleinsäure, Linolensäure, Linolsäure, Vaccensäure,
Eleostearinsäure, Licansäure, Parinarsäure, Gadolensäure,
Celotensäure, Selacholensäure.usw.; Salze'dieser Säuren
einschließlich Natriumacetat, Kaliumacetat, Natriumpropionat,

Kaliumbutyrat, Kaliumoleat, Natriumoleat usw.; Amine wie Äthylamin,
Propylamin, Isopropylamin, Butylamin, Amyiamin, Hexylamin,
Heptylamin, Octylamin, Nonylamin, Decylamin, Dimethylamin, Diäthylamin, Dipropylamin, Dibutylamin, Diamylamin, Dihexylamin,
Diheptylamin usw. Bei der bevorzugten Ausführungsform
der Erfindung können die vorgenannten Friktionsmodifiziermittel in einer Menge·im Bereich von.etwa 0,1 bis 2 Gewichts-% des
Polyglycols vorhanden sein. Es versteht sich, daß die vorgenannten
Beispiele von Polyglycolen und Friktionsmodifiziermitteln
nur als Vertreter der Verbindungsklassen zu betrachten sind, die benutzt werden können,und die Erfindung hierauf nicht
unbedingt beschränkt ist.
Es ist vorgesehen, daß die Reibungsmodifiziermittel in Lösung mit den vorgenannten Polyglycolen benutzt werden können. Wenn
jedoch die Reibungsmodifiziermittel mit dem Polyglycol keine Lösung bilden, kann die Masse als eine Emulsion mit oder ohne
Wasser benutzt werden. Das Schmiermittel der Erfindung kann in jeder üblichen Weise verwendet werden, je nach der jeweiligen
Arbeitsweise, die bei der Metallbearbeitung angewendet wird. In jedem Fall muß jedoch das Schmiermittel in solcher Weise angewendet
werden, daß sein Vorhandensein an den Kontaktpunkten der Metalle, die sich in Bewegung zueinander befinden, gewährleistet
ist. Auch soll die benutzte Schmiermittelmenge ausreichend sein, um eine wirksame Schmierung zu erzielen. Diese
Menge hängt ebenfalls von dem betreffenden Bearbeitungsvorgang ab, der angewendet wird.
Die folgenden Beispiele dienen zur Erläuterung des Verfahrens
der Erfindung, doch ohne Beschränkung hierauf.

Die Schmiermittel wurden in einer modifizierten Bowden-Leben-Zapfen-
und -Scheibenmaschine geprüft. Die Bowden-Leben-Methode ist in "The Friction and Lubrication of Solids", 1954, Seite
von Bowden und Tabor beschrieben. Auch wird diese Methode in dem Aufsatz von E. Rabinowicz "The Boundary Friction of Very
Well Lubricated Surfaces" erörtert, der bei dem neunten A.S.L.E-Treffen
in Cincinnati am 5. April 1954 vorgelegt und in der Juli-August-Ausgabe 1954 von "Lubricating Engineering" veröffentlicht
worden ist. Bei der für die hier berichteten Versuche angewendeten Abwandlung rotiert eine A-8-Stahlscheibe am
Kontakt mit einem aufrecht stehenden abgerundeten Zircaloy-Zapfen.
Zircaloy Nr. 2 ist beispielsweise eine Legierung enthaltend
98,3 Gewichts-% Zirkon, 1,5 Gewichts-% Zinn, 0,20 Gewichts-% Eisen und 0,10 Gewichts-% Chrom.
Insgesamt wird eine Schmiermittelmenge -von etwa 2 g benutzt.
Etwa 1,8 g Schmiermittel wird auf die Scheibe und etwa 0,2 g Schmiermittel auf den Zapfen aufgetragen. Das Gerät wird in ein
Gehäuse eingeschlossen, das bei diesen Prüfungen zur Abwandlung der Versuchstemperatür im Bereich von etwa 22 bis 100 C
(72 bis 212° F) geheizt wird. Die Geschwindigkeit ist auf 6 U/Min, festgelegt. Bei jedem Versuch wird eine Ausgangsbelastung
von 100 g in Einheiten von je 100 g und in Abständen von 1,67 Min. bis zu einer Höchstbelastung von 1300 g gesteigert.
Als Abtastelement wird ein Belastungsmeßkreis bei der Umwandlung der Reibungseffekte in äquivalente elektrische Signale
benutzt, die auf einen kontinuierlichen Schreiber aufge-

zeichnet werden. Der Reibungskoeffizient wird für jedes Zeitintervall
bestimmt. Außerdem wird der Durchmesser des Abnutzungsfleckes auf dem Zapfen gemessen. Der Zapfen und die Scheibe
werden unmittelbar nach der Prüfung visuell untersucht, um die Abriebmenge zu bestimmen.
Die bei diesen Prüfungen benutzten Schmiermittel waren hochmolekulare
Polypropylenglycole, die von der Dow Chemical Company unter den Handelsbezeichnungen P-400 bzw. P-1200 erhältlich
sind; die Versuche wurden bei 22° C durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Prüfungen finden sich in der nachstehenden Tabelle.

Aus den Werten in der vorstehenden Tabelle ist zu erkennen, daß der Reibungskoeffizient befriedigend war, die Abnutzungsfläche relativ klein und der Abfall leicht war.
Zur Erläuterung des Unterschiedes zwischen den Polyglycolen nach der Erfindung und einem Monoglycol wurden zwei weitere
Versuche unter Benutzung von Propylenglycol und Dipropylenglycol als Schmiermittel durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse dieser
Versuche finden sich in der folgenden Tabelle.

Es ist zu bemerken, daß die Abnutzungsfläche nahezu 10 mal größer
als bei Benutzung eines Polyglycols und außerdem der Abfall schwer oder leicht bis mäßig war. Dieser Vergleich erläutert
zahlenmäßig den Vorteil der Benutzung eines Polyglycols als Schmiermittel, wenn eine Zirkonlegierung unter Benutzung einer
Scheibe aus unterschiedlichem Metall, nämlich Stahl, bearbeitet wird.
Bei diesem Versuch bestand das Schmiermittel, das in derselben Weise wie in Beispiel 1 und 2 untersucht wurde, aus einer Mischung
von 99 % P-400 und 1 % Kaliumoleat. Wie in den obigen Beispielen lag die Belastung bei 100 bis 1300 g für einen Zeitraum
von 202 Minuten. Der Reibungskoeffizient nahm während dieser Zeit von O,168 auf 0,126 ab. Die Abnutzungsfläche betrug

nach Ablauf dieser Zeit 0,0907 mm ,und der Abfall war leicht bis mäßig.

Das in diesem Beispiel untersuchte Schmiermittel bestand aus einer Mischung von 99 % P-400 und 1 % Oleinsäure. Der Reibungs-

koeffizient wurde während eines Zeitraumes von 202 Minuten von O,140 auf 0,112 herabgesetzt. Die Abnutzungsfläche betrug

O,212 mm ,und der Abfall war mäßig.

Ein Zirkaloy-Rohr wurde wieder einer ähnlichen Prüfung,wie in
Tablle I angegeben, unterzogen, wobei als Schmiermittel bei der Bearbeitung eine Mischung von 99 % P-1200 und 1 % Oleinsäure
benutzt wurde. Die Prüfung wurde über einen Zeitraum von 202 Minuten bei einer Temperatur von 22° C durchgeführt. Dabei wurde
der Reibungskoeffizient von 0,142 auf 0,108 herabgesetzt. Die Abfallmenge war leicht, und die Abnutzungsfläche betrug
0,0803 mm2.
Das in diesem Beispiel benutzte Schmiermittel bestand aus einer Mischung von 99 % Polyglycol P-15-200 und 1 % Oleinsäure.
Der Reibungskoeffizient nahm während einer Zeitspanne von 202 Minuten von 0,117 auf 0,087 ab. Der Abfall war leicht bis
2 mäßig und die Abnutzungsfläche 0,166 mm .
Das in diesem Beispiel untersuchte Schmiermittel bestand aus einer Mischung von 99 % Polyglycol P-400 und 1 % Stearinsäure.
Nach einem Zeitraum von 202 Minuten war der Reibungskoeffizient von 0,140 auf 0,119 herabgesetzt, während die Abfallmenge leicht
bis mäßig war. Auch bei Benutzung einer Mischung von 99 % Polyglycol P-400 und 1 % Kaliumnaphthanat als Schmiermittel wurde

der Rexbungskoeffizient von 0,175 auf 0,121 im Verlauf von
202 Minuten herabgesetzt, und die Abfallmenge war wiederum leicht bis mäßig.

Claims (8)
1. Verfahren zur Metallbearbeitung, bei/ein Nichteisenmetall sich
mit einem zweiten Metall und einem Schmiermittel in beweglichem Kontakt befindet, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als
Schmiermittel ein Polyglycol benutzt.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Nichteisenmetall aus Zirkon, einer Zirkonlegierung, Titan oder
einer Titanlegierung besteht.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Polyglycol ein Reibungsmodifiziermittel enthält.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das
Polyglycol 0,1 bis 2 Gewichts-% Modifiziermittel enthält.
5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Reibungsmodifiziermittel aus Oleinsäure besteht.
6. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß das Polyglycol aus einem Polyäthylenglycol oder PoIypropylenglycol
besteht.
7. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß die Bearbeitung in einer Arbeitsweise zur Reduzierung eines Rohrdurchmessers besteht.
