Abstract
A composition having lubricating and rustprotective properties comprises a liquid polyalkylene oxide of average molecular weight p between 600 and 2,000, 0.05-5 per cent by weight of a hydrocarbon sulphonic acid metallic salt and a minor amount of a water-insoluble fatty acid, e.g. stearic acid. The polyalkylene oxide may consist of one or more polymers of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, 1,2-butylene oxide, 2,3-butylene oxide, isobutylene oxide, tetramethylene oxide, methyl phenyl ethylene oxide, cyclohexene oxide, methyl cyclohexene oxide and 1,2-cetene oxide, or a copolymer of more than one ethylene oxide, e.g. a copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, propylene oxide and epichlorhydrin, propylene oxide and 1,2-butylene oxide, propylene oxide and glycidol, and propylene oxide and isobutylene oxide. The salt may be obtained by neutralizing with a metal salt, e.g. a calcium salt, a sulphonated alkyl benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, picine, chrysene, diphenyl, a "green" acid or "mahogany" acid, and the hydrocarbon sulphonic acids may contain substitution radicals such as hydroxyl, primary, secondary or tertiary amines, ether, sulphide, hydrosulphide, di-sulphide and halogen. The compositions may also contain oxidation inhibitors, E.P. agents, pour-point depressants, anti-wear compounds, detergent and sludge-preventing compounds. The polymers and copolymers may be made by polymerizing at temperatures varying from -25 DEG to 250 DEG C. and pressures from atmospheric to 12,000 atmospheres. Diluents such as water, alcohols, ethers, hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons and inert gas, and polymerization catalysts such as amines, inorganic bases, metallic oxides, metals, e.g. sodium, potassium and calcium, strong acids, organic salts, e.g. sodium acetate and oxalate, alkali metal phosphates, carbonates and sulphates, chlorides of zinc, tin, calcium, iron, antimony and aluminium, Fuller's earth, activated clays, bromine, boron trifluoride, peroxide and ultraviolet light may be employed in the polymerization. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the replacement of the polyalkylene oxide by esters of dicarboxylic and substituted acids, e.g. acids in which the carboxyl groups are united through oxygen, sulphur, selenium and tellurium, polyalkylene episulphides, polyalkylene imides, polysulphides, e.g. bis(gamma-hydroxy-propyl) disulphide, organic phosphates, polyamides, silicones, selenides, and chlorinated paraffin wax. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:A lubricating and rust protective composition comprises a liquid polyalkylene oxide of average molecular weight between 600 and 2,000, 0.05-5 per cent by weight of a hydrocarbon sulphonic acid metallic salt and a minor amount of a water-insoluble fatty acid, e.g. stearic acid.
