Verfahren zur Herstellung von Methylphosphinoxiden
Vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung
von Methylphosphinoxiden der. allgemeinen Formel (i)

wobei R und R1 gleiche oder ungleiche Alkyl-, Cycloalkyl-,
Aralkyl- oder Arylgruppen mit 1 bis 18, vorzugsweise 1-bis 6, insbesondere 1 oder 2 C-Atomen,bedeuten, die auch Substituenten,
welche sich unter den Reaktionsbedingungen inert verhalten - insbesondere OH-Gruppen - ^tragen können.
Es ist bekannt, daß sich Hydroxymethylphosphine in die isomeren Methylphosphinoxide umlagern, wenn man sie lange Zeit auf
hohe Temperaturen erhitzt (Lieb. Ann. 659, 49 ff /~1962_7; US-PS 3 732 316).
Nachteilig an dieser bekannten Arbeitsweise ist, daß hierbei
beträchtliche Mengen an Energie aufgewendet werden müssen und daß es durch langes Erhitzen auf hohe Temperaturen zur Bildung
von störenden Nebenprodukten kommt; so entsteht z.B. aus Hydroxymethyl-di-cyclohexyl-phosphin
nach 3 stündigem Erhitzen

auf 240 bis 2500C das isomere Dicyclohexyl-methylphosphinoxid
nur zu 40,5 %, während die Spaltung der Ausgangsverbindung in Formaldehyd und Dicyclohexy!phosphin die eigentliche'
Hauptreaktion darstellt. Die Bildung von Spaltprodukten, wie primären und sekundären Phosphinen, beinhaltet einen zusätzlichen
großen Nachteil, da vor allem die Phosphine mit-kurzen
C-Ketten teilweise an der Luft selbstentzündlich und darüber hinaus noch toxisch sind.
Überraschenderweise wurde nun gefunden, daß man diese Umlagerung unter wesentlich einfacheren und milderen Bedingungen
durchführen kann, wenn man die Hydroxymethylphosphine mit
Hilfe von Radikalbildnern umlagert. Als Radikalbildner können Peroxyverbindungen, wie z.B. Di-tertiär-butyl-peroxid, Benzoylperoxid,
CyclohexyIperoxid, Trifluorperessigsäure oder Percarbonate, ferner Azo-Verbindungen, wie'beispielsweise Azo-bisiso-buttersäurenitril,
oder UV-Licht oder γ-Strahlen verwendet werden.
Es empfiehlt sich, unter Inertgasatmosphäre, z.B. unter Stickstoff,
Kohlendioxid oder Argon, zu arbeiten. Auch kann die Umlagerung in Gegenwart von Lösemitteln .oder deren Gemischen
durchgeführt werden, von denen insbesondere Chloroform, Methy lenchlorid,
Toluol oder Äthanol, für-diese Zwecke geeignet sind. Die Isomerisierung findet bereits bei Temperaturen zwischen
-15°C und 1000C, vorzugsweise zwischen 25 und 75°C,statt.
Die Umlagerung kann auch unter Druck durchgeführt werden.
Die Aufarbeitung des Reaktionsproduktes kann beispielsweise durch destillative Entfernung des Lösemittels oder durch Phasentrennung
erfolgen. .
Methylphosphinoxide stellen wertvolle Flammschutzmittel dar.
Weiterhin können sie als Zwischenprodukte bei der Herstellung anderer Flammschutzmittel sowie von Pflanzenschutzmitteln und
Pharmazeutika dienen. . ■ ·

Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren gestattet es, Methylphosphinoxide
in einfacher Weise in hoher Reinheit und mit guten Ausbeuten herzustellen.
108 g Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methylphosphin werden in 500 ml
Chloroform gelöst. Bei' intensiver Durchmischung wird 8 h lang unter Stickstoffatmosphäre mit UV-Licht bestrahlt. Die Reaktionstemperatur
liegt bei 25°C. Nach beendeter Reaktion wird das Lösemittel in bekannter Weise durch Destillation entfernt.
Es verbleiben als Destillationsrückstand 106 g eines farblosen viskosen Öles, welches beim Stehen langsam auskristallisiert
und bei 60 bis 65 C schmilzt. Die sowohl gaschromatographisch
als auch NMR-spektroskopisch ermittelte Ausbeute an Hydroxymethyl-dimethylphosphinoxid beträgt 79 % der Theorie,
Die Titration mit Jod im sauren Medium zeigt, daß keine dreiwertigen Phosphorverbindungen mehr vorhanden sind.
Eine weitere Reinigung kann mittels an sich bekannter Verfahrensweisen,
wie Vakuumdestillation (Hauptfraktion: Kpn ? „
138 bis 14O°C) oder fraktionierende Kristallisation, erfolgen.
Man erhält ein farbloses, kristallines, stark hygroskopisches Produkt mit einem Schmelzpunkt von 74 bis'770C, welches in
allen chemischen, physikalischen und spektroskopischen Eigenschaften
mit einem nach der DT-OS 2 060 217 hergestellten Vergleichsprodukt übereinstimmt.
Analyse: C^HqO2P
31P-NMR: -53 ppm (gegen 85 % H3PO^ als Standard)
berechnet: C 33,3 %; H 8,4 %-, P 28,7 %

Zu 600 ml Methylenchlorid werden unter intensiver Durchmischung
bei 25°C bei gleichzeitiger UV-Bestrahlung und unter Argonatmosphäre 108 g Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methy!phosphin
zudosiert. Danach wird noch 5,5 h bestrahlt. Nach dem destillativen Entfernen des Lösemittels verbleiben 107 g eines
farblosen Öles, welches beim Stehen langsam auskristallisiert, Das Rohprodukt besitzt gegenüber Jod in saurer Lösung keine
reduzierende Eigenschaften, enthält also keine dreiwertigen Phosphorverbindungen mehr. Die gaschromatographisch und NMR-spektroskopisch
ermittelte Ausbeute an (CH^)pP(O)CHpOH liegt
bei 83 %. Das durch fraktionierende Vakuumdestillation gewonnene Produkt schmilzt bei 74 bis 75°C (Kp0 ρ To ^ ~^ ^is
139°C) und ist mit dem in Beispiel 1 beschriebenen Produkt identisch.
Die Wiederholung des Versuchs 1 unter Ersatz des Chloroforms durch ein Gemisch von Toluol und Methylenchlorid.(80 : 20 Gewichts%)
bei 60 C führt zum gleichen Ergebnis.
108 g Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphin werden in 400 ml Äthanol
gelöst. Unter intensivem Rühren v/erden unter Stickstoffatmosphäre
innerhalb von 8 h bei 75°C 120 ml Äthanol zugetropft, welches 1 Gewichts^ Benzoylperoxid enthält. Nach
einer Nachreaktion von 4 h bei der Siedetemperatur des Äthanols wird das Lösemittel abdestilliert. Beim verbleibenden
Rückstand (106.4 g) handelt es. sich um 78 prozentiges Hydroxymethyl-dimethylphosphinoxid,
welches dem nach Beispiel 1 hergestellten Produkt entspricht. Die weitere Reinigung
erfolgt nach den üblichen Methoden.

Durch 600 ml Methylenchlorid wird 10 Minuten lang bei etwa
400C zur vollständigen Entfernung von gelöstem Sauerstoff
ein kräftiger Argonstrom -geleitet. Anschließend werden bei Raumtemperatur 100 g (T,09 Mol) Hydroxymethyl-dimethylphosphin
unter Argon-Schutzgasatmosphäre zugetropft; gleichzeitig wird mit UV-Licht bestrahlt und intensiv gerührt. Nach
beendeter Phosphinzugabe wird noch 9 h bestrahlt. Daran anschließend wird das Lösemittel destillativ entfernt. Der
verbleibende farblose, feste Rückstand (106,8 g) besteht nach der NMR-spektroskopischen Analyse zu 91,8 % aus Trimethyl-phosphinoxid.
Bei den vorhandenen Verunreinigungen handelt es sich vornehmlich um Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-dimethylphosphonium-chlorid
und Hydroxymethyl-trimethyl-phosphoniumchlorid, neben einer geringen Mengen an Ausgangsprodukt

Eine weitere Reinigung des Rohproduktes kann in an sich bekannter Weise durch fraktionierende Vakuumdestillation,
durch Sublimation oder durch Kristallisation erfolgen.
Das durch Vakuumsublimation gereinigte Produkt hat einen Schmelzpunkt von 139 bis 14O,5°C und ist mit einem nach
Houben-Weyl, "Methoden der Organischen Chemie", 12/1, 158, 159 (1963) aus Methyl-magnesiumchlorid und Phosphoroxychlorid
hergestellten Vergleichsmuster identisch (Mischschmelzpunkt, NMR-, IR-Spektrum). ■ . ;
60 g (0,18 Mol) Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-octadecyl-phosphin werden unter InertgasatmoSphäre (Np) in 600 ml Methylenchlorid
gelöst, welches durch Durchleit.en von Stickstoff bei der Rückflußtemperatur des Lösemittels vollständig von gelöstem Sauer-

stoff befreit ist. Unter intensiver Durchmischung wird anschließend
bei 25°C insgesamt 9 h mit UV-Licht bestrahlt. Nach beendeter Bestrahlung wird das Methylenchlorid destillativ
entfernt, und an den Rückstand kurzzeitig Wasserstrahlpumpen-Vakuum
angelegt, um etwaige, im Reaktionsprodukt gelöste Lösemittelreste quantitativ zu entfernen. Es verbleiben
61,2 g eines farblosen, hochviskosen Öles, welches nach der NMR-spektroskopischen Analyse zu 80 % aus Hydroxymethy1-octadecyl-methylphosphinoxid
besteht (^ P-NMR: -57 ppm). Das Produkt enthält keine 3-wertigen Phosphorverbindungen mehr
(Jod-Titration im sauren Medium). ' ,
Eine weitere Reinigung kann nach bekannten Methoden, wie Kri-:
stallisation oder Extraktion, erfolgen.
Zu 600 ml Chloroform werden unter Stickstoff 100 g Tris-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphin
gegeben. Unter Rühren wird auf 55 C aufgeheizt. Dann wird insgesamt 9 h unter intensiver Durchmischung
bei 500C mit UV-Licht bestrahlt. Es bilden sich zwei
Phasen aus, die nach beendeter Reaktion und Abkühlen in einem Trenngefäß abgetrennt werden. Die obere Phase (119, 5 g) wird
einer kurzzeitigen Vakuumbehandlung (2 Torr; 15 Minuten) unterworfen, um eventuell anhaftendes Lösemittel zu entfernen.
Man erhält 96,5 g eines schwach gelblichen, hochviskosen Öls, welches nach der NMR-Analyse zu 74,1 % aus Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid
besteht ( P-NMR: -50 ppm). Aus der unteren Phase können nach der destillativen Entfernung des
Chloroforms weitere 3,1 g Umlagerungsprodukt gewonnen werden. Eine weitere Reinigung kann gegebenenfalls durch schonende
Vakuumdestillation oder durch Umkristallisieren, z.B. ,aus Dimethylformamid oder Äthanol/Isopropanol-Gemischen, erfolgen
(Fp, 68 bis 69°C).

Claims (13)
1) Verfahren zur Herstellung von Methylphosphinoxiden der
allgemeinen Formel (i)
aus Hydroxymethylphosphinen der allgemeinen Formel (II)

wobei R und R1 gleicheoder ungleiche Alkyl-, Cycloalkyl-,
Aralkyl- oder Arylgruppen mit 1 bis 18, vorzugsweise 1 bis 6, insbesondere 1 oder.2 C-Atomen, bedeuten, die auch Substituenten,
welche sich unter den Reaktionsbedingungen inert verhalten- insbesondere OH-Gruppen -,tragen können,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Hydroxymethylphosphine
mit Hilfe von Radikalbildnern umlagert.
2) Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
als Radikalbildner Peroxyverbindungen einsetzt.
3) Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
Di-tertiär-butyl-peroxid, Benzoylperoxid, Cyclohexylperoxid, Trifluorperessigsäure oder Percarbonate verwendet.
4) Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
als Radikalbildner Azo-Verbindungen verwendet.
5) Verfahren nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
Azo-bis-iso-buttersäurenitril verwendet.

6) Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
als Radikalbildner UV-Licht verwendet.
7) Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
als Radikalbildner γ-Strahlen verwendet.
8): Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man unter Inertgasatmosphäre arbeitet.
9) Verfahren nach Anspruch 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
unter Stickstoff, Kohlendioxid oder Argon arbeitet.
10) Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet
, daß man die Umlagerung in Gegenwart von Lösemitteln oder deren Gemischen durchführt.
11) Verfahren nach Anspruch 10, dadurch gekennzeichnet,daß man
als Lösemittel Chloroform, Methylenchlorid, Toluol oder Äthanol verwendet.
12) Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 11, dadurch gekennzeichnet
, daß man die Umlagerung bei Temperaturen zwischen -15°C und 1000C durchführt.
13) Verfahren nach Anspruch 12, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
die Umlagerung zwischen 25 und 75°C durchführt."
