Description
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein verbessertes Verfahren zur Herstellung von aromatischen Hydroxycarbonsäurealkylestern
mit 1 bis 5 Kohlenstoffatomen in der Alkylestergruppe durch Veresterung von aromatischen
Hydroxycarbonsäuren mit Dialkylsulfaten in wäßrigem Medium. Das Verfahren ist dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß man die Veresterung bei einem pH-Wert von etwa 4 bis 6,5 vornimmt.
Es ist bereits bekannt, aromatische Hydroxycarbonsäuren mit Dialkylsulfaten, insbesondere Dimethylsulfat,
in wäßrigem Medium zu verestern (s. H ο u ben-Weyl,
Methoden der organischen Chemie, Bd. 8 [1952], S. 542 und 543, und Berichte der deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft, Bd. 37 [1904],
S. 3658 bis 3661).
Hierbei werden die Carbonsäuren zunächst in ihre Alkalisalze übergeführt und dann mit Dimethylsulfat
umgesetzt. Nach diesem Verfahren erhält man jedoch nicht die Hydroxycarbonsäurealkylester, sondern vorwiegend
die Alkoxycarbonsäurealkylester, im Falle der Verwendung von Dimethylsulfat und Hydroxynaphthoesäure
somit den Methoxynaphthoesäuremethylester.
Der Anteil an Alkoxyester kann unter üblichen Reaktionsbedingungen nicht mehr in den gewünschten
Hydroxyester zurückgespalten weiden und geht damit verloren, wodurch völlig unbefriedigende Ausbeuten
resultieren, so daß sich eine technische Nutzung dieser Reaktion von selbst verbietet.
Aromatische Hydroxycarbonsäurealkylester sind jedoch begehrte Produkte, die unter anderem als
Konservierungsmittel, Lichtschutzmittel, Farbstoffzwischenprodukte und Färbercihilfsmittel Verwendung
finden.
Ihre technische Herstellung erfolgt ausschließlich durch Veresterung der freien Hydroxycarbonsäure
unter Zusatz von Mineralsäure in überschüssigem Alkohol, was eine Isolierung des im allgemeinen nur
durch Phenolat- oder Naphtholat-Carboxylierung zugänglichen Ausgangsprodukts, Abtrennung des Endprodukts
durch Lösungsmittelhllration sowie Regeneration des Uberschußalkohols zur Folge hat.
Diese arbeits- und investitionsintensiven Verfahren sind daher zur technischen Herstellung nur bedingt
geeignet, so daß eine günstigere Synthese erstrebenswert war.
Rs ist weiterhin bekannt, Hydroxybenzoesäuremethvlester
durch Veresterung von Hydroxybcnzoesäure mit Dimethylsulfat in Aceton herzustellen (s.
Chemical Abstracts, Vol.49 [1955], 11594h). Für eine technische Durchführung ist dieses Verfahren,
jedoch nicht geeignet, da beim Arbeiten in Aceton 5 oder Methanol die Zerstörung des im Überschuß
angewendeten Dialkylsulfats und die Lösungsmittelregeneration ganz erhebliche Schwierigkeiten bereiten.
Beim vorliegenden Verfahren gelingt es, aroma-ίο tische Hydroxycarbonsäurealkylester in hoher Selektivität
und Ausbeute herzustellen.
Das Verfahren wird zweckmäßig in der Weise durchgeführt, daß man die wäßrige Lösung des
Alkalisalzes der aromatischen Hydroxycarbonsäure mit Säure, vorzugsweise mit einer Mineralsäure, wie
Salzsäure oder Schwefelsäure, auf einen pH-Wert von etwa 4 bis 6,5, vorzugsweise von etwa 5,0 bis 5,5,
einstellt und anschließend durch gleichzeitigen Zulauf des Dialkylsulfats und einer Alkalihydroxylösung
unter Konstanthaltung des eingestellten pH-Bereiches bei Temperaturen zwischen etwa 40 und 800C, vorzugsweise
zwischen etwa 50 bis 600C, verestert.
Der Überschuß an Alkylierungsmittel wird anschließend durch Zugabe von Ammoniak zerstört
und das Endprodukt, gegebenenfalls nach Zwischenklärung mit Aktivkohle und/oder durch Aufhellen
mit einem üblichen Bleichmittel, wie Natriumdithionit, mit Mineralsäure bei einen? pH-Wert von etwa
7 bis 8,5 ausgefällt, filtriert und getrocknet.
Ausgangsverbindungen für das erfindungsgemäßc Verfahren sind beispielsweise Phenolcarbonsäuren,
wie die Salicylsäure oder p-Hydroxy-benzoesäure, Dihydroxybenzoesäuren, Naphtholcarbonsäuren, wie
die 2-Hydroxynaphthalin-3-carbonsäure, niedere Alkyl-
oder Alkoxygruppen enthaltende Phenolcarbonsäuren, beispielsweise Kresolcarbonsäuren und Xylenolcarbonsäuren,
außerdem heterocyclische Verbindungen, wie Hydroxycarbazolcarbonsäuren oder
Hydroxydibenzofurancarbonsäuren.
Als Dialkylsulfate kommen bevorzugt technisch leicht zugängliche Verbindungen in Frage, wie beispielsweise
Dimethylsulfat und Diäthyisulfat.
Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ist besonders als Folgereaklion einer Carboxylierung einer aromatisehen
Hydroxyverbindung, beispielsweise nach Kolbe-Schmitt oder M a r a s s e, die technisch
bevorzugte Herstellungsverfahren für die Ausgangsverbindungen darstellen, geeignet. Hierbei wird das
von im Überschuß eingesetzten Phenol oder Naphthol befreite, als Reaktionsprodukt erhaltene Carboxylat
(Alkalisalz der aromatischen Hydroxycarbonsäure) in Wasser gelöst und nach Einstellen des dem erfindungsgemäßen
Verfahren entsprechenden pH-Wertes ohne Zwischenisolicrung der freien Säure verestert.
Somit erlaubt es das neue Verfahren darüber hinaus, ein Phenol oder Naphthol im gleichen Reaktionsgefäß
unter Vermeidung von Regenerationen, Filtrationen, Trocknungen und aufwendigen Apparaturen in ausgezeichneter
Ausbeute und Reinheit direkt in den cntsprechenden aromalischen Hydroxycarbonsäureester
überzuführen. Der damit verbundene erhebliche technische Fortschritt liegt auf der Hand.
Das nachstehende Beispiel dient zur Erläuterung der Erfindung. Die Teil·: sind Gcwichtstcilc.
In einem Kolben mit Rührer, Thermometer, Tropftrichlern
und pH-Elektrode werden 650 Teile einer
wäßrigen Lösung des Dikaliumsalzes der p-Hydroxybenzoesäure,
die 138 Teile der freien p-Hydroxybenzoesäure
enthält, vorgelegt.
Durch Zulauf von 100 Teilen konzentrierter Schwefelsäure
wird der pH-Werl auf 5,0 eingestellt. Nach
dem Erwärmen auf 55 bis 60° C werden in 3 Stunden bei dieser Temperatur 277 Teile Dimethylsulfat zugetropft;
durch gleichzeitigen Zulauf von 200Teifen 33%iger Natronlauge wird der pH-Wert auf 6,0 gehalten.
Man rührt 30 Minuten nach, setzt nacheinander 500 Teile Wasser und 226 Teile 25%igen Ammoniak
zu, worauf der während der Veresterung ausgefallene rohe p-Hydroxybenzoesäuremethylester in
Lösung geht. Nach Zugabe von 5 Teilen Aktivkohle wird 15 Minuten gerührt, über eine mit 5 Teilen
Kieselgur belegte Nutsche geklärt; das Filtrat wird mit 0,5 Teilen Natriumdithionit aufgehellt. Dann
tropft man innerhalb von 30 Minuten 120 Teile konz. Schwefelsäure zu, bis ein pH-Wert von 8,5 erreicht isi.

ab, wäscht neutral und trocknet.
Man erhält etwa 137 Teile (= 90% der Theorie)
p-Hydroxybenzoesäuremethylester vom Schmelzpunkt 124 bis 125° C.
Die nachstehende Tabelle enthält weitere erfindungsgemäß
erhältliche aromatische Hydroxycarbonsäurealkylester, die in analoger Weise zu den Angaben
im Beispiel 1 hergestellt wurden.

Claims (2)
- Patentansprüche:!. Verfahren zur He.stellung von aromatischen Hytiroxycarbonsäurealkylestern mit 1 bis 5 Kohlenstoffatomen in der Alkylestergruppe durch Veresterung von aromatischen Hydroxycarbonsäuren mit Dialkylsulfaten in wäßrigem Medium, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Veresterung bei einem pH-Wert von etwa 4 bis 6,5 vornimmt.
- 2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Veresterung mit dem bei der Carboxylierung von aromatischen Hydroxyverbindungen erhaltenen Carboxylat vornimmt.
