技术领域
本发明一般涉及在包装材料上印刷图象,并具体涉及在包装材料上形成和印刷数字图象。
发明背景
自从有历史记载以前,包装物和容器的制作者就已提供具有图象的产品。然而,自前哥伦比亚(pre-Columbia)陶器直到聚乙烯袋,成象制作和转印到容器上的过程都是劳动密集的、费时且费料的。尽管在过去的十年来印刷工业已发生了许多变革,但这一点仍然是事实。
计算机是造成这一变革中很多方面的原因,尤其是在预印刷工业中。计算机的影响首先在工艺创作、颜色分离和检验中被感觉到。正如桌面出版的不断扩展所证明的,许多这方面的变化因世界上电子通信快速发展的推动仍在进行中。
随着这些变化,在工业中形成一种奇怪的不平衡。尽管大多数电影胶片的预印刷操作因计算机的出现受到显著的影响,而印刷间却多年来基本保持原状。在许多印刷厂里,见到用于创作艺术作品并甚至用于加工电影胶片及图版(plate)的最现代技术已是平常的事,而包装材料的印刷仍然使用印版(plate)或滚筒,做好印刷准备工作,印刷并完成操作等几十年来很少变化的过程。因而,包装商一般花几小时在计算机上创作并精制艺术作品,仅使用其祖父母所熟悉的同样的印刷设备和技术来结束工作。这些工序一般用几周时间来完成,往往要消耗大量劳力和能量,同时造成很大的浪费。
与艺术作品制作的革命同时发生,但基本上不依赖于这一革命,计算机工业中的市场压力已导致新印刷设备的迅速发展。在这些新设备中有使用激光喷射(laser jet)或喷墨技术的、数字式的、非击打式的印刷机,它们甚至在最小的办公室里也变得很平凡。尽管它们在种种场合被广泛接受,但这些技术尚需以一种有效的方式应用于诸如包装材料的印刷基底的生产中。
在包装材料工业中,最常用的印刷技术是照相凹版印刷和胶版印刷。在典型的照相凹版印刷过程中,从创作原始艺术作品直到把包装材料交付顾客经历五至九周的时间并非罕见。照相凹版印刷的过程一般能描述如下。一旦包装物生产者收到艺术作品就先对它检验。其次进行分离和制作溴化物样品并进行检验,然后交给顾客认可。一旦溴化物样品被认可,生产者就制出印刷金属板,或“金属版印品“,的校样,对它再次进行检验并送给顾客。在顾客认可金属版印品校样后,包装物生产者制作滚筒,然后转动滚筒并检验滚筒校样,并将它们送给顾客认可。如滚筒校样被接受,印刷工作就可准备开始。随着印刷开始,包装材料就能运转并接着交付顾客。
胶版印刷过程,尽管一般比照相凹版印刷需要的时间较短,同样是复杂和费时间的。一旦包装物生产者收到艺术作品,先对它检验。其次进行分离和制出假型样品,并进行检验,然后交给顾客认可。一旦假型样品被认可,包装物生产者就制出印刷品校样,对它再次进行检验并送交顾客。顾客认可印刷品校样后,包装物生产者对底版曝光并制出印刷底版,然后将底版装在印刷机上。下一步,印刷毡层被清理,把印刷机调整好并配好油墨。这时印刷工作已准备好供包装材料运转,并接着交付给顾客。整个胶印过程往往花费二至七周。
因而,可以看出在电子预印刷得到发展并被接受为包装材料制作中的规范时,适当的印刷系统的改进工作已经落后了。提供一种使用电子印刷技术直接印刷到所需基底上的包装材料印刷系统理应是有益的。这可缩减从创作设计到产出材料之间的步骤,同时减少预印刷工作并消除大量浪费。这样的系统由于有力地减少指令改变和准备时间而将提高产量。
发明概述
本发明提供一种印刷包装材料的方法和仪器,它能消除或改善许多已知系统的缺陷。在实施例中,提供了一种在包装材料上印刷的方法,其中制作一种电子可存储和可检索的数字图象。其次,该数字图象被传送至印刷区。最后,该数字图象用数字方法直接印刷在印刷区的包装材料上。用数字方法直接把数字图象印刷在包装材料上的步骤可包括用数字方法将数字图象直接印刷在预成型的瓶子,例如PET瓶子上。另一方面,用数字方法将数字图象直接印刷在包装材料上的步骤能包括用数字方法直接将数字图象印刷在纸板盒上或包装材料卷,如具有至少一层纤维板的层压包装材料上。
用数字方法将数字图象直接印刷在包装材料的步骤可包括通过喷墨印刷头将油墨喷射在包装材料的表面上。油墨可用紫外线活性油墨。在这种情况下,在印刷步骤之后通过在紫外线或电子束下曝光,紫外线活性油墨被固化。还要考虑印刷前材料表面可能已处理过。一般表面处理的技术包括火焰处理(flame tratement),电晕处理和等离子体喷射处理。
可以设想包装材料形成系统可在印刷区提供,而使完成印刷步骤与用包装材料形成容器基本上在印刷区同时进行。在这方面,与包装材料在印刷区形成容器的步骤基本上同时进行的用数字方法印刷图象的步骤,可包括在与包装材料形成系统的成形一填充一密封包装机的成形部分相邻处用数字方法印刷图象。在一个实施例中,数字印刷可以在成形-填充-密封包装机中实施。
将数字图象传送至印刷区的步骤可包括用电子学方法将数字图象传送至印刷区,如通过电话调制解调器。
本发明提供一种操作人员介入最少的、先进水平的自动装置。预印刷区的终端产品以电子形式直接传送至电子印刷机,从而消除传统劳动密集型的预印刷操作和材料。同样重要的是在电子印刷机上制作准备和纸张的消耗相当于传统印刷操作相应费用的一小部分。

优选实施例详述
如图1所示,提供了在包装材料上印刷的印刷系统10。在图象制作区12制作一个电子可存储和可检索的数字图象。制作区12可以是,例如,具有诸如扫描仪14、台式计算机16和数字存储装置18等仪器的商用设计工作室。图象制作区12备有制作区数据传送装置20,它能用电子学方法传送数字化生成图象。可以预期,制作区数据传送装置20包括电话调制解调器或其他电子传送媒质,或另外可选择地包括电子传输和物理传送的某种组合。
印刷系统10进一步包括印刷区30。印刷区30包括可与制作区数据传送设备20通信的印刷区数据传送设备32。印刷区数据传送设备32本身与印刷区图象处理装置34保持联系。该处理装置34可包括,例如,扫描仪36、台式计算机38和存储设备40。
图象处理装置与包括CPU(中心处理装置)44和记忆存储设备46的印刷控制装置42相连接。控制装置44适合于选择性地驱动和监控材料印刷仪器50。该印刷仪器50包括数字印刷头52,它位于在下文将详细描述的包装材料供给源54附近。该印刷仪器50可连同材料生产流水线56一起提供,材料生产流水线可包括如火焰、电晕、或等离子体处理装置,挤压机等。印刷仪器也可装在成形-填充-密封机58附近或作为该机器的一部分,在该机器中包装材料被制成容器,装上产品并密封。
图2图解说明一种特殊的印刷装置60,其中图象信息被印刷在制成容器62形式的包装材料上。容器62可以是预成形的瓶子,如PET或HDPE(高密度聚乙烯)瓶子,或是由诸如纤维板层压制品的层压材料卷制成的容器。印刷装置60包括数字印刷头64,它可以用喷墨印刷头。一种合适的印刷头是Spectra model(光谱型)160-1600-4。印刷头以流体形式与油墨供应源66相连接。已发现紫外线活性油墨特别适合于包装材料。可接受的油墨包括Coates制造的蓝绿色U1670,深红色U1688,黄色1647,和黑色U1669。固化装置68位于印刷头64的附近。为了固化油墨,使它们固定且耐刮擦,将刚印刷好的包装材料曝露于固化装置68下。固化装置68可由,例如,紫外光源或电子束装置构成。合适的紫外光源是,如Fusion model F300紫外灯。
在操作中,图形设计人员在图象制作区使用不同图象制作仪器制作供包装材料用的数字图象。其次,数字图象通过制作区数据传送设备20和印刷区数据传送设备32被传送至印刷区。当需要时使用扫描仪36、台式计算机38、存储装置40以电子学方法可在印刷区图象处理装置34作任何现场的变更。

图3图解说明了适合于具有不规则形状或大量纹理表面的包装材料的另一种印刷装置80。印刷装置80包括与参考图2所显示和描述的相似的喷墨印刷头82。然而,并不是直接印刷在包装材料84上,印刷头将油墨引向覆盖在胶印滚筒88的86上。然后油墨从衬垫86转移到包装材料的表面84上。这种装置消除了由于从印刷头将油墨射到不规则表面上所引起可能的失真。
对于包装材料工业中各种各样可能的用途,本发明使得符合要求、高质量的印刷成为可能。借助各自与材料及市场要求相适应的合适的油墨,本发明能在运动的材料卷上,在纸板盒的半成品上,或在制成的容器如瓶子或罐头上,印刷复杂的图样。本发明外提供了消除传统劳动密集型的预印刷操作以及对感光板和胶片材料的需要的机会,并大大降低了保持印刷包装材料的常备存货的需要。由于用数字方法存储和印刷成象的多用性,包装设计和信息能存储在计算机的存储器中,被检索并按照要求定做。
虽然已参照具体的实施例对本发明做了描述,但那些熟悉本技术领域的人员将认识到在不违反所附权利要求中所述的本发明的目标和精神前提下,可以对本发明作一些变动。

Claims (21)

1.在包装材料上印刷的方法,包括下列步骤:
制作用电子方法可存储和可检索的数字图象;
将数字图象传送到印刷区;并
将数字图象直接用数字方法印刷在印刷区的包装材料上。
2.权利要求1的方法,其特征在于,将数字图象用数字方法直接印刷在包装材料上的步骤包括将数字图象用数字方法直接印刷在预成型的瓶子上。
3.权利要求2的方法,其特征在于,将数字图象用数字方法直接印刷在预成型瓶子上的步骤包括用数字方法直接印刷在PET瓶子上。
4.权利要求1的方法,其特征在于,将数字图象用数字方法直接印刷在包装材料上的步骤包括将数字图象用数字方法直接印刷在纸板盒的半成品上。
5.权利要求1的方法,其特征在于,将数字图象用数字方法直接印刷在包装材料上的步骤包括将数字图象直接印刷在包装材料卷上。

在第一位置制作用电子学方法可传送的图象;
从第一位置将图象传送至远处的包装材料生产区;
在包装材料生产区接收图象;以及
将图象转移至包装材料上。
19.将图象信息印刷在包装材料上的仪器,该仪器包括下列部分:
用数字方法控制的印刷头;以及
将材料移动通过印刷头的设备。
20.权利要求19的仪器,其特征在于,进一步包括下列部分:
与印刷头相连的液态可固化油墨的供给源;以及
在包装材料附近的固化辐射源。
