Abstract
一种激光存入液晶元件(10)包括组成元件外表
面的第一和第二透明基片层(14,16)。第一和第二
电极层(18,20)均由透明导电材料制成,第一和第二
电极层分别邻接第一和第二基片层。蝶状结构液晶
层(12)置于两电极层之间。一个三层结构(24)置于
液晶层和第二电极层之间,用以吸收红外辐射而允许
可见光辐射通过。该结构包括一辐射吸收材料层
(28),一选择反射红外辐射而透过可见光辐射层(26)
和一位于上述二者之间的介电材料隔离层(30)。
Description
本发明涉及用作图象投影光调制器的液晶器件,特别涉及一种能用激光束在其上写入信息供连续投影用的液晶元件。该元件以透射方式工作,因此能直接通过该元件投影。
近几十年来,利用液晶材料的器件已受到相当大的注意。这些液晶器件中,大部分利用向列类液晶。这类器件不能存储数据,必须不断存入或更新。不过,在所需显示是动态的并基本上是连续更新的情况下,这倒不算是缺点。
第二类液晶材料称为蝶状结构液晶,其所具有的存储能力在于图象信息只需在液晶元件上写一次,之后,所写入信息直至清除前都保持不变。
已采用这些蝶状结构材料作为高分辨率投影显示器件研制出激光存入液晶光调制器。在这些器件上的写入机理主要是热。用聚焦的红外激光束把蝶状结构液晶材料加热到各向同性态。然后,把液晶冷却回复至蝶状结构态,形成光散射区。写入的散射区在特定液晶材料的蝶状结构温度范围内是稳定的,写入的信息便能保存下来。该元件可用数量级为105伏/厘米的电场或用加热和外加电场的组合效应来清除。
在元件写入后,使可见光通过元件投影,则任何已写入的图象均可投影到显示屏、光敏材料等上。这类显示器件的各种类型已在杜威的“激光存入液晶显示器”,光学工程23(3),第230页至第240页(5-6月,1984年)(Dewey,“Laser-Addressed Liquid Crystal Displays,”Optical Engineering 23(3),230-240(May/June 1984)一文中讨论。
现已研制出与红外二极管激光器结合使用的两种激光存入液晶光调制器件,均在杜威所著参考文献中讨论到。一种称为反射式器件,它利用制备在液晶元件基片之一上的薄膜红外吸收层。当红外光束通过该吸收层扫描时,辐射就转换成熟,使在该元件内产生散射区。但是,该薄膜红外吸收层不仅不能透过红外辐射,而且也不能透过在成象投影时所用的可见光辐射。因此,在液晶元件上已写下来的图象必须用把可见光辐射从该元件反射出去的方法来投影。而这就需要使用比较复杂的光学反射系统。
第二种器件通常称为透射式器件。一般来说,是把在激光器波长处有吸收峰值的红外吸收染料掺入液晶材料中。当写入光束通过该元件扫描时,染料便吸收激光辐射并将其转换成熟。该染料对可见光波长的光没有什么影响或根本没影响。因此,在这种器件上写入的图象可只用与普通幻灯片放映机一样的方法使投影光通过元件来投影。所以需要的投影系统比反射式器件简单和价廉。但这种器件用的红外吸收染料在重复使用后会褪色,因而不适于多次使用。
鉴此,需要一种激光存入液晶光调制器克服上述透射式和反射式两种器件的缺点。特别是,这种器件应能使用比较简单的透射式器件的光学系统,而且该器件应有长寿命而性能不会下降。
为满足上述要求,本发明提供一种激光存入液晶元件。该元件包括用来限定其外表面的第一和第二透明基片层。第一和第二电极层均由透明导电材料组成。第一电极层邻接第一基片层,第二电极层邻接第二基片层。蝶状结构液晶层位于两电极层之间。液晶层和第二电极层之间是吸收红外辐射而允许可见光辐射通过的结构。
红外吸收结构是一种三层结构。该结构包括一辐射吸收材料层,一选择反射红外辐射而透射可见光辐射层以及位于上述二者之间的一个介电材料隔离层。
该液晶元件可通过第一基片层进行激光存入,或者也可通过第二基片层进行激光存入。
辐射吸收材料层可用金属材料制成,最好用镍制成。隔离层可用二氧化硅。
选择反射层包括第一和第二种介电材料的许多交替层,第一种材料的折射率高于第二种材料。交替层的总层数为奇数,每一交替层的光学厚度为红外辐射波长的四分之一。第一种材料最好是二氧化钛,第二种材料最好是二氧化硅。

图1是按照本发明的液晶元件一部分的截面图;
图2是本发明另一实施例的液晶元件一部分的截面图;
图3是本发明又一实施例的液晶元件一部分的截面图。
本发明提供一种液晶光调制元件,用红外激光束存入,把数据记在元件上,记录之后,使可见光以透射方式通过元件,把图象投影在适当的显示或光敏介质上。
用于把数据存入元件的红外激光器最好是产生波长为830毫微米的光束的二极管激光器。光束用适当的扫描方法扫过整个元件,把图象数据写入该元件。激光器写入元件所用的特定方法和投射光通过元件的定向所用的特定方法对本发明并不重要。不过,这种方法的一个实例可参阅美国专利US-A-4564853。
参看图1,该图为按照本发明制造的液晶光调制元件的截面图。元件10有一液晶层12。可用任何蝶状结构A类液晶材料,较好的一个例子是CBOA。
元件10用一对透明基片层14和16固定,这些层最好由玻璃制成。位于基片层14和液晶材料层12之间的是透明导电材料层18。该种材料的第二层20邻接基片层16。这些透明导电层最好用铟-锡氧化物制成层18和20一起用作清除该液晶元件的导体。因此,层18和20之间可产生电场,使液晶重新调整至完全非散射态。
来自适当光源(图中未示)如激光二极管的红外激光辐射一般从图1中箭头22所示方向投向该元件上。投射光可从两个方向之一投射到该元件上。
位于液晶材料12和导体层20之间的是明显透明的红外吸收腔24。该种吸收腔在激光二极管波长处有强的吸收能力,如按较好的实施例制造,在波长为830毫微米时能吸收90%以上。该吸收腔在可见光谱内也有高透射率。如按较好的实施例制造,该元件在可见光谱区的透射率约为40-50%。
当激光辐射被吸收时,在吸收腔24便产生热。该热作用于层12内的液晶材料,产生相应于待记录图象信息的散射区。
透明红外吸收腔由三叠层的介电和金属薄膜组成。如图1所示,吸收腔包括一介电激光镜26,一吸收层28和位于二者之间的隔离层30。该三层一起构成一干涉腔,当适当调整时,可使该腔大量吸收入射激光。
在三层红外吸收腔24中,吸收层28与隔离层30一起接收进入的红外辐射。在吸收层28和液晶材料12之间的界面上,可反射一些光。其余的光则通过吸收层28进入隔离层30,在激光镜26上反射,然后折回吸收层/液晶界面与由该界面反射的光干涉。反射光的有效量可用调整隔离层30的光学厚度来减至最小。这样,90%以上的入射红外辐射可被吸收。
吸收层最好用极薄的金属层制成。这种层要薄到使它的一次通过光学透射率是高的。这在投射光束通过元件时是需要的。这种层的较好厚度是5-10毫微米,最好是7.5毫微米。在一个较好的实施例中,吸收层由镍制成,但其它一些合适的材料如铬或锰也可采用。
隔离层30是一种透明介电层。如所指出一样,选择这种层的厚度是要使对红外激光辐射的反射减至最小而吸收增至最大。这种层的较好厚度是180-220毫微米,最好是200毫微米。在一个较好的实施例中,这种层可用二氧化硅制成,也可用氟化镁。
关于三层吸收结构的更进一步细述可参阅贝尔和斯庞的“光学记录用防反射结构”,电气与电子工程师协会量子电子学杂志QE-14(7),第487页第495页(1978年7月)(Bell and Spong,“Anti-Reflection Structures for Optrcal Recording,”I.E.E.E.Journal of Quantum Electronics QE-14(7),487-495(July 1978))。该文提到的器件中,反射层是不透明的,一般是金属层,能完全反射在隔离层/反射层界面上的红外辐射。当然,这种方法不能用于透射式液晶光调制器,因为这种层不让投影成象所需的可见光通过。
本发明中,激光镜26的结构为一具有一组介电层的多层结构。这种镜对红外辐射有高反射率,约为95-99%,而对可见光基本上是透过的。该镜的层由两种不同材料制成,以交替方式叠在一起。在较好的实施例中,叠层的奇数层用折射率高的材料制成。在一个实例中,这些层的合适材料是XO2,其中X从包括钛、铪或锆的族中选择,钛较好。偶数层则用折射率较低的材料制成。这种材料的一个较好实例是二氧化硅SiO2,也可用氟化镁MgF2。叠层中每层的光学厚度均等于激光波长的四分之一。这样,激光镜就专门调谐至入射辐射。
激光镜内介电层的总数最好至少为7。在一个实例中用了11层,所得的镜在波长为830毫微米时反射率约为99%,在可见光谱区平均透射率大于95%。
制造这种激光镜的方法是使用的已知技术。有关这类器件的理论的进一步细述,可参阅鲍梅斯特的“干涉和光学干涉涂层”,应用光学和光学工程,第285页-323页(金斯莱克公司1965年版)(Baumeister,“Interference,and Optical Interference Coatings”,Applied Optics and Optical Engineering,pp.285-323(Kingslakeed,1965))。
图1所示元件实施例的一种改型可参阅图2。此外,图2中的元件表示得更为详细,激光镜26的各层均可看出。在该实施例中,附加绝缘层32置于液晶元件12和吸收层28之间。该绝缘层32包括两部分,一是层34,由一氧化硅材料制成,用以调整液晶分子,第二部分36由二氧化硅材料制成。层32用于直流电流的截断,所选择的厚度要不能严重影响吸收结构的光学性能。在一个较好的实施例中,该层厚度可以是115毫微米。
图3是另一个实施例。图中所示的元件40中,透明电极层42紧挨在上玻璃基片层44的下面。红外吸收腔46邻接电极42,包括吸收层48,隔离层50和激光镜52。液晶材料54紧挨在激光镜52下面,接着是第二电极层56和下基片58。红外激光写入束从箭头60所示方向投射在元件上。可见投射光可从两个方向之一投射在元件上。在该实施例中,由于电极层42和吸收层48吸收红外辐射而产生足够的热,使在液晶材料54内形成散射区。
元件40最好由与图1元件10中相应层相同的材料和相同厚度的几层组成。
Claims (14)
1、一种激光存入液晶元件,包括:
限定所述元件外表面的第一和第二透明基片层;
第一和第二电极层,每层均由透明导电材料制成,所述第一电极层邻接上述第一基片层,所述第二电极层邻接上述第二基片层;
在上述两电极层间的蝶状结构液晶层;和
置于上述液晶层和上述第二电极层之间供吸收红外辐射而允许可见光辐射通过的结构;
其特征在于所述红外吸收结构包括一辐射吸收材料层,一选择反射红外辐射而透过可见光辐射层,和一置于上述二层之间的介电材料隔离层。
2、按照权利要求1所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述元件通过上述第一基片层进行激光存入。
3、按照权利要求1所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述元件通过上述第二基片层进行激光存入。
4、按照权利要求1,2或3所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述辐射吸收材料层用金属材料制成。
5、按照权利要求4所确定的浓晶元件,其特征在于所述辐射吸收材料层用镍制成。
6、按照权利要求1,2或3所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述隔离层用二氧化硅材料制成。
7、按照权利要求1,2或3所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述隔离层用氟化镁材料制成。
8、按照权利要求1,2或3所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述选择反射层是一介电反射镜。
9、按照权利要求1,2或3所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述选择反射层包括第一和第二种介电材料的许多交替层,所述第一种材料的折射率高于第二种材料的折射率。
10、按照权利要求9所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述的每层交替层的光学厚度均为所述红外辐射波长的四分之一。
11、按照权利要求9所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述第一种材料是XO2,其中X从包括钛、铪和锆的族中选择。
12、按照权利要求9所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述第二种材料是二氧化硅。
13、按照权利要求9所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述第二种材料是氟化镁。
14、按照权利要求1所确定的液晶元件,其特征在于所述第一和第二电极层用铟-锡氧化物材料制成。
