Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及等离子显示面板,并且更为具体地涉及一种用于驱动等离子显示面板的方法。
背景技术
等离子显示面板(在下文中,作为“PDP”提到)适于通过以比如He+Xe,Ne+Xe或He+Ne+Xe的气体放电期间产生的147nm紫外线辐射荧光材料来显示包括字符或图形的图像。随着近来的技术进步,这种PDP可以被制造得薄而且大,并且可以提供大大改进的图像质量。特别是,三电极AC表面放电类型PDP具有降低驱动电压和产品寿命较长的优点,这是因为通过在放电情况下在表面累积的壁电荷降低了放电所需的电压,并且保护电极不受放电产生的飞溅影响。

参考图1,三电极AC表面放电类型PDP的放电单元包括在上基片10的下表面上形成的扫描电极30Y和维持电极30Z,以及在下基片18上形成的寻址电极20X。

根据由寻址放电所选的放电单元是否发射光线,驱动PDP的方法主要被分类为选择性写入模式和选择性擦除模式。
在选择性写入模式中,在复位周期期间关闭整个单元,并且在寻址周期中选择要被打开的打开单元。此外,在选择性写入模式中,在维持周期期间保持由寻址放电选择的打开单元的放电,以便显示图像。
在选择性擦除模式中,在复位周期期间打开整个单元,并且在寻址周期期间选择要被关闭的关闭单元。另外,在选择性擦除模式中,在维持周期中,除去由寻址放电选择的关闭单元外,保持打开单元的放电以便显示图像。
选择性写入模式具有的优点在于灰度级表示的范围比选择性擦除模式要宽,但是具有的缺点在于寻址周期比选择性擦除模式的要长。相反的,选择性擦除模式的优点在于可以进行高速驱动,但是缺点在于对比度特性比选择性写入模式的要差,因为在非显示周期的复位周期期间打开整个单元。
已经被公开了的所谓的“SWSE模式”的驱动方法具有比选择性写入模式和选择性擦除模式更好的优点。在这个SWSE模式中,一帧周期包括其中选择打开单元以显示图像的多个选择性写入子场,以及其中选择关闭单元以显示图像的多个选择性擦除子场。
图3示出了以SWSE模式驱动的PDP的驱动波形。
参考图3,在通用SWSE模式中的一帧包括具有一个或多个子场的选择性写入子场WSF,以及具有一个或多个子场的选择性擦除子场ESF。
选择性写入子场WSF包括m(其中,m是大于0的正整数)个子场SF1到SFm。将除了第m个子场SFm的第一到第m-1个子场SF1到SFm-1的一个划分为用于在整个屏幕的单元中均匀形成恒定量的壁电荷的复位周期,用于使用写入放电选择打开单元的选择性写入寻址周期(在下文中,作为“写入寻址周期”提到),用于使得在所选的打开单元中发生维持放电的维持周期,以及用于在维持放电之后擦除在单元中的壁电荷的擦除周期。将是选择性写入子场WSF的最后一个子场的第m个子场划分为复位周期、写入寻址周期和维持周期。

在选择性写入子场WSF的写入寻址周期中,将最多下降到负极性的写入扫描电压-Vym的写入扫描脉冲SWSCN循序加到扫描电极线Y,并且在同时将写入数据脉冲SWD加到寻址电极线X,使得同步写入扫描脉冲SWSCN。当添加了在写入扫描脉冲SWSCN和写入数据脉冲SWD之间的电压差值和先前在单元中累积的壁电荷时,在施加了写入数据脉冲SWD的打开单元中产生写放电。写入放电使得正极性的壁电荷在扫描电极线Y上累计,并且负极性的壁电荷在维持电极线Z和寻址电极线X上累积。这样形成的壁电荷用于降低用于在维持周期期间产生维持放电的外部电压,也就是,维持电压。

之后,在第m个子场SFm(最后一个SW子场)的复位周期中,将其电压升高到建立电压Vsetup的上斜的倾斜波形RPSU同时加到所有扫描电极线Y。同时,将0V的电压或地电压GND加到维持电极线Z和寻址电极线X。该倾斜波形RPSU使得在整个屏幕的单元中、在扫描电极线Y和寻址电极线X之间以及在扫描电极线Y和维持电极线Z之间发生复位放电。在这时,在先前子场SFm-1的擦除周期中没有充分执行擦除,在扫描电极线Y上形成多余的负(-)极性的壁电荷,并且甚至在维持电极线Z上累积多余的正(+)极性的壁电荷。这些多余的壁电荷使得复位放电不稳定,并可以在接下来的子场中产生不稳定的放电。具体地说,当在高温(大约40℃到90℃)下驱动面板时这个问题很明显。
发明内容
因此,本发明的目的是至少解决现有技术的问题和缺点。
本发明的目的是提供一种驱动可以产生稳定的放电的等离子显示面板的方法。
根据本发明的第一实施例,提供了一种驱动等离子显示面板的方法,其中一帧包括多个选择性写入子场和多个选择性擦除子场,该方法包括步骤:在多个选择性写入子场的至少一个选择性写入子场的擦除周期期间,将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线,用于擦除由放电产生的壁电荷;以及在擦除周期期间将和第一擦除倾斜波形交替的第二擦除倾斜波形加到维持电极线;其中,第一擦除倾斜波形的提供周期大于第二擦除倾斜波形的提供周期。
根据本发明的第二实施例,提供了一种驱动等离子显示面板的方法,包括步骤:在用于擦除由放电产生的壁电荷的擦除周期期间,将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线;以及在擦除周期期间将第二擦除倾斜波形和第一擦除倾斜波形交替加到维持电极线;其中所提供的第一擦除倾斜波形的周期被设置得比所提供的第二擦除倾斜波形的周期更长。
根据驱动PDP的方法,在选择性写入子场的擦除周期期间可以充分擦除壁电荷。因此,可以在接下来的子场中产生稳定的放电。具体地说,可以在高温环境产生稳定的放电。

具体实施方式
下面将参考附图以更详细的方式描述本发明的优选实施例。
<第一实施例>
根据本发明的第一实施例,提供了一种驱动等离子显示面板的方法,其中一帧包括多个选择性写入子场和多个选择性擦除子场,该方法包括步骤:在多个选择性写入子场的至少一个选择性写入子场的擦除周期期间,将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线,用于擦除由放电产生的壁电荷;以及在擦除周期期间将与第一擦除倾斜波形交替的第二擦除倾斜波形加到维持电极线。
至少一个选择性写入子场正好位于最后一个选择性写入子场之前,且最后一个选择性写入子场位于转变到选择性擦除子场之前。
至少一个选择性写入子场是具有16个亮度加权的子场。
第一擦除倾斜波形是其中电压逐渐升高到第一电压并且之后在预定周期中保持在第一电压的倾斜波形。
第一电压被设置到大约200到300V。
其中提供第一擦除倾斜波形的周期被设置到大约80到150μs。
第二擦除倾斜波形是其中电压逐渐升高到预定电压的倾斜波形。
其中提供第一擦除倾斜波形的周期被设置得比其中提供第二擦除倾斜波形的周期更长。
当以高温驱动面板时应用在擦除周期期间将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线的步骤。
高温的范围是从大约40℃到90℃。
在下文中,将参考附图描述根据本发明第一实施例的驱动等离子显示面板的方法。
图5示出了根据本发明的实施例的等离子显示面板的驱动波形。
参考图5,在根据本发明的实施例的PDP的驱动波形中,一帧包括具有一个或多个子场的选择性写入子场WSF,以及具有一个或多个子场的选择性擦除子场ESF。
选择性写入子场WSF包括m(其中,m是大于0的正整数)个子场SF1到SFm。将除了第m个子场SFm的第一到第m-1个子场SF1到SFm-1的每一个划分为用于在整个屏幕的单元中均匀形成恒定量的壁电荷的复位周期,用于使用写入放电选择打开单元的选择性写入寻址周期,用于使得在所选的打开单元中发生维持放电的维持周期,以及用于在维持放电之后擦除在单元中的壁电荷的擦除周期。将是选择性写入子场WSF的最后一个子场的第m个子场SFm划分为复位周期、写入寻址周期和维持周期。
在选择性写入子场WSF的复位周期中,将其中电压上升到建立电压Vsetup的上斜的倾斜波形RPSU同时加到所有扫描电极线Y。同时,将0V的电压或地电压GND加到维持电极线Z和寻址电极线X。上升沿波形RPSU使得在整个屏幕的单元中,在扫描电极线Y和寻址电极线X之间和在扫描电极线Y和维持电极线Z之间发生无光放电。利用建立的放电,正(+)极性的壁电荷在寻址电极线X和维持电极线Z上累积,并且负(-)极性的壁电荷在扫描电极线Y上累积。在上升沿波形RPSU之后,将开始从低于建立电压Vsetup的正极性的电压下降的下斜的下降沿波形RPSD加到扫描电极线Y。同时,将DC偏压Dcbias加到维持电极线Z。由于在下降沿波形RPSD和DC偏压Dcbias之间的电压差值使得在扫描电极线Y和维持电极线Z之间产生无光放电。而且,在其中下降沿波形RPSD下降的周期期间在扫描电极线Y和寻址电极线X之间产生无光放电。该通过下降沿波形RPSD的撤除放电被用于擦除由上升沿波形RPSU产生的电荷中不对寻址放电做出贡献的多余壁电荷。就是说,下降沿波形RPSD用于设置稳定的写入寻址的初始条件。
在选择性写入子场WSF的写入寻址周期中,将最多下降到负极性的写入扫描电压-Vyw的写入扫描脉冲SWSCN循序加到扫描电极线Y。同时,将写入数据脉冲SWD加到寻址电极线X,使得写入扫描脉冲SWSCN被同步。当在写入扫描脉冲SWSCN和写入数据脉冲SWD之间的电压差值和先前在单元中累积的壁电压被累计时,在应用了写入数据脉冲SWD的打开单元中产生写入放电。该写入放电使得正极性的壁电荷在扫描电极线Y上累计,而且负极性的壁电荷在维持电极线Z和寻址电极线X上累积。这样形成的壁电荷用于降低用于在维持周期期间产生维持放电的外部电压,也就是,维持电压。
在选择性写入子场WSF的维持周期中,将维持脉冲SUSPy、SUSPz交替加到扫描电极线Y和维持电极线Z。无论何时这样施加维持脉冲SUSPy、SUSPz,在其中在写入寻址周期期间产生写入放电的打开单元中产生维持放电。
在产生最后的维持放电之后,在选择性写入子场WSF的除了最后一个子场SFm的第一到第m-2个子场SF1到SFm-2的擦除周期期间,将其中电压逐渐升高到维持电压(Vs)的擦除倾斜波形ERS加到维持电极线Z。由擦除倾斜波形ERS擦除由维持放电产生的壁电荷,同时在打开单元中产生弱的擦除放电。相反的,在选择性写入子场WSF的最后一个子场SFm中产生最后的维持放电之后,过渡到选择性擦除子场ESF的第一个子场SFm+1而无需任何擦除信号,结果,仅当下一个子场是选择性写入子场时,将具有这个擦除功能的擦除倾斜波形ERS或擦除电压(或波形)排列在相应子场中。
同时,在第m-1个子场SFm-1中,在产生最后一个维持放电之后,如图6所示,在其中电压逐渐升高到作为预定电压的第一电压V1的第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1,并且之后在给定时间,例如,20μs中保持在第一电压V1上,在擦除周期中将该波形加到扫描电极线Y。在这时,优选的是第一电压V1的范围从200V到300V。这是为了合适地发生擦除放电。在这个情况中,如果第一电压小于200V,在一定程度上产生擦除放电,但是该擦除放电不能到达希望的程度。另外,如果第一电压大于300V,因为过多的擦除放电,而在扫描电极线Y上累积反向电荷。因此,在接下来的子场中不能产生稳定的放电。
另外,将其中提供第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1的周期(Δt)优选地设置到80到150μs。这是为了保证足够的擦除放电和基于PDP的驱动的时序余量。如果所提供的第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1的周期小于80μs,因为提供周期过短,则不能提供足够的电压。因此,产生不充分的擦除放电。同时,如果所提供的第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1的周期大于150μs,根据PDP的驱动的时序余量被减少。
由第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1擦除由维持放电产生的壁电荷,而且在打开单元中产生弱的擦除放电。此外,在擦除周期期间,将其中电压逐渐升高到维持电压(Vs)的第二擦除倾斜波形ERS2交替加到维持电极线Z。在这时,第二擦除倾斜波形ERS2的提供时间优选地比第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1的短。这是因为由维持放电产生的壁电荷足以被第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1擦除,并且考虑根据PDP的驱动的时序余量,虽然在比所提供的第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1的周期更短的周期中提供第二擦除倾斜波形ERS2,也可以擦除剩余的壁电荷。就是说,由第一擦除脉冲ERS1进一步擦除剩余的壁电荷,而且通过第二擦除倾斜波形ERS2在打开单元中产生弱的的擦除放电。因此,可以在接下来的子场中能产生稳定的放电。
下面将详细描述。如果将最后一个维持脉冲SUSPz施加到第m-1个子场的维持电极线Z,在扫描电极线Y上形成正(+)极性的壁电荷,并且在维持电极线Z上形成负(-)极性的壁电荷,如图7a所示。之后,在第m-1个子场SFm-1的擦除周期期间,将其电压逐渐升高到预定电压的第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1加到扫描电极线Y,并且之后在给定时间保持在预定电压。如图7a所示的维持放电产生的壁电荷由第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1擦除,而且在打开单元中产生弱的擦除放电。结果,如图7b所示,壁电荷被减少。另外,在擦除周期期间,将其电压逐渐升高到维持电压(Vs)的第二擦除倾斜波形ERS2交替加到维持电极线Z。由第二擦除倾斜波形ERS2再次擦除由第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1擦除的壁电荷,而且在打开单元中产生弱的擦除放电。结果,如图7c所示,充分擦除壁电荷。因此,可以在接下来的子场中产生稳定的放电。
选择性擦除子场ESF包括n-m个(其中,n是大于m的正整数)子场SFm+1到SFn。第m+1到第n个子场SFm+1到SFn中的每一个被划分为用于使用擦除放电选择关闭单元的选择性擦除寻址周期,以及用于在打开单元中产生维持放电的维持周期。
在选择性擦除子场ESF的寻址周期中,将最多下降到负极性的擦除扫描电压-Vye的擦除扫描脉冲SESCN循序加到扫描电极线Y。同时,将与擦除扫描脉冲SESCN同步的擦除数据脉冲SED加到寻址电极线X。因为在负极性的选择性擦除扫描脉冲SESCN和选择性擦除数据脉冲SED之间的电压差值和从先前的子场保持的打开单元中的壁电压被累加,在施加了选择性擦除数据脉冲SED的打开单元中产生擦除放电。通过擦除放电将打开单元中的壁电荷擦除到虽然施加维持电压也不产生放电的程度。
在选择性擦除子场ESF的寻址周期期间,将0V的电压或地电压GND加到维持电极线Z。
在选择性擦除子场ESF的维持周期中,将维持脉冲SUSPy、SUSPz交替加到扫描电极线Y和维持电极线Z。每当这样使用维持脉冲SUSPy、SUSPz,在其在擦除寻址周期期间没有产生擦除放电的打开单元中产生维持放电。
同时,将描述在以SWSE模式驱动的PDP的驱动方法中用于寻址的数据编码方法。如果假定一帧由将其亮度相关比率分别不同地设置为20、21、22、23、24和25的六个选择性写入子场SF1到SF6,以及将其亮度相关比率设置到25的六个选择性擦除子场SF7到SF12组成,由子场SF1到SFn的组合表示的灰度级的级别和编码方法如下面的表1所示。

从表1中可以看出,在帧前面设置的第一到第五子场SF1到SF5表示通过二进制编码的单元的灰度级值。另外,第六到第十二子场SF6到SF12决定在给定灰度级值上通过线性编码的单元的亮度以表示灰度级值。在这时,用实验方法找到当恰好在最后的选择性写入子场的第六子场SF6之前的子场的第五子场SF5具有16个亮度加权时,可以更好地应用根据本发明实施例的SWSE模式驱动的PDP的驱动波形。
在根据本发明第一实施例的驱动PDP的方法中,在恰好在选择性写入子场SFm之前的选择性写入子场SFm-1的擦除周期期间,将第一擦除倾斜波形ERS1加到扫描电极线Y,其中选择性写入子场SFm是在从选择性写入子场WSF转变到选择性擦除子场ESF之前的子场。另外,将第二擦除倾斜波形ERS2交替加到维持电极线Z。因此,当根据本发明第一实施例的驱动波形被应用到(具体地说)高温环境中时,在第m-1个选择性写入子场SFm-1的擦除周期期间可以充分擦除壁电荷。因此,在接下来的子场中可以稳定地产生电荷。
<第二实施例>
根据本发明的第二实施例,还提供了一种驱动等离子显示面板的方法,该方法包括步骤:在用于擦除由放电产生的壁电荷的擦除周期期间,将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线;以及在擦除周期期间将和第一擦除倾斜波形交替的第二擦除倾斜波形加到维持电极线。
第一擦除倾斜波形是其电压逐渐升高到第一电压,并且在预定周期保持在第一电压的倾斜波形。
第一电压被设置到大约200到300V。
其中施加第一擦除倾斜波形的周期被设置为大约80到150μs。
第二擦除倾斜波形是其电压逐渐升高到预定电压的倾斜波形。
其中施加的第一擦除倾斜波形的周期被设置得比其施加的第二擦除倾斜波形的周期更长。
当面板在高温下驱动时,施加在擦除周期期间将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线的步骤。
高温的范围是从大约40℃到90℃。
在下文中,将参考附图描述根据本发明的第二实施例的驱动等离子显示面板的方法。
根据本发明第二实施例的PDP的驱动方法不同于本发明的第一实施例的方法,其驱动一帧且将其划分为多个选择性写入子场和多个选择性擦除子场的区别在于仅以选择性写入子场或选择性擦除子场驱动一帧来驱动。但是,在每一选择性写入子场或选择性擦除子场的擦除周期期间,根据本发明第二实施例的PDP驱动方法和根据本发明第一实施例的方法相同。
在根据本发明第二实施例的PDP驱动方法中,就像根据本发明第一实施例的驱动方法,可以在每一子场的擦除周期期间充分擦除壁电荷。因此,可以在接下来的子场中稳定产生放电。
这样描述了本发明,很明显可以做出多种修改。这种修改不应该被认为脱离本发明的精神和范围,并且所有对本领域普通技术人员来说很明显的改变都意在被包括在下面权利要求的范围之中。
Claims (14)
1.一种驱动等离子显示面板的方法,其中一帧包括多个选择性写入子场和多个选择性擦除子场,该方法包括步骤:
在多个选择性写入子场的至少一个选择性写入子场的擦除周期期间,将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线,用于擦除由放电产生的壁电荷;以及
在擦除周期期间将和第一擦除倾斜波形交替的第二擦除倾斜波形加到维持电极线;
其中,第一擦除倾斜波形的提供周期大于第二擦除倾斜波形的提供周期。
2.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,该至少一个选择性写入子场正好位于最后一个选择性写入子场之前,且最后一个选择性写入子场位于在转变到选择性擦除子场之前。
3.如权利要求2所述的方法,其中,该至少一个选择性写入子场是具有16个亮度加权的子场。
4.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,该第一擦除倾斜波形是其电压逐渐升高到第一电压、并且之后在预定周期中保持在第一电压的倾斜波形。
5.如权利要求4所述的方法,其中,该第一电压被设置到200到300V。
6.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,所提供的第一擦除倾斜波形的周期被设置到80到150μs。
7.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,该第二擦除倾斜波形是其电压逐渐升高到预定电压的倾斜波形。
8.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,当在高温下驱动面板时,应用在擦除周期期间将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线的步骤;其中,该高温的范围是从40℃到90℃。
9.一种驱动等离子显示面板的方法,该方法包括步骤:
在用于擦除由放电产生的壁电荷的擦除周期期间,将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线;以及
在擦除周期期间将和第一擦除倾斜波形交替的第二擦除倾斜波形加到维持电极线;
其中所提供的第一擦除倾斜波形的周期被设置得比所提供的第二擦除倾斜波形的周期更长。
10.如权利要求9所述的方法,其中,该第一擦除倾斜波形是其电压逐渐升高到第一电压并且在预定周期保持在第一电压的倾斜波形。
11.如权利要求10所述的方法,其中,该第一电压被设置到200到300V。
12.如权利要求10所述的方法,其中,所提供的第一擦除倾斜波形的周期被设置到80到150μs。
13.如权利要求9所述的方法,其中,该第二擦除倾斜波形是其电压逐渐升高到预定电压的倾斜波形。
14.如权利要求9所述的方法,其中,当在高温下驱动面板时,应用在擦除周期期间将第一擦除倾斜波形加到扫描电极线的步骤,其中,该高温的范围是从40℃到90℃。
