Au dessin ci-joint, donné à titre d'exem ple: La fig. 1 est une vue en élévation, et La fig. 2, une coupe longitudinale d'une forme d'exécution de la bougie d'allumage suivant l'invention; La fig. 3 est une coupe transversale sui vant la ligne 3-3 de la fig. 2; La fig. 4 est une coupe d'un détail, cor respondant à la fig. 2 et montrant une va riante du moyen de support pour l'extrémité extérieure de l'électrode centrale;
Spark plug for internal combustion engines. The present invention relates to a spark plug for internal combustion engines, in which the body of the spark plug is provided internally with a conical seat against which an insulating sleeve, with a conical outer shoulder of corresponding inclination, is maintained by the intermediary of a central electrode, a head of which is supported on the lower end of said insulating sleeve also by means of a conical seat, an elastic member keeping the central electrode under tension.
Means may be provided for adjusting the width of the gap between the spark bursting parts of the electrodes, and for cooling the central electrode so as to prevent it from overheating, the maximum cooling effect for the electrode. central which can be obtained by allowing lateral access of air to this electrode through the body of the spark plug.
In the accompanying drawing, given by way of example: FIG. 1 is an elevational view, and FIG. 2, a longitudinal section of an embodiment of the spark plug according to the invention; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a detail, corresponding to FIG. 2 and showing a variant of the support means for the outer end of the central electrode;
Figs. 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, 11 and 12, represent different means for adjusting the interval between the spark bursting parts of the electrodes.
The body has. spark plug shown in fig. 1 to 3 comprises the usual threaded tubu lure a ', constituting the external elec trode., In an appropriate relative position with respect to the insulated central electrode g.
The tubing a 'contains an insulating sleeve b, for example made of quartz, and of relatively short length; this sleeve b has a conical shoulder b 'located approximately towards the middle of its length, fitting against a conical seat, of corresponding inclination, a' '', formed in the pipe a \; the two conical surfaces form a gas-tight seal, these surfaces being, for example, ground or dressed and finished exactly (the other way, without requiring gasket gaskets.
The head g 'of the central electrode and the lower end of the. insulating sleeve b also come into engagement with one another in a similar conical seat, exhibiting an equal inclination directed in the opposite direction. In the example shown, these faces form a key angle 45 with the vertical, which allows the insulating sleeve to apply freely by itself on its seat under the action of a longitudinal movement, while by allowing it to go back when the central electrode shank or the head thereof contracts and when the circumferential contraction of the spark plug body reduces the diameter of the seat relative to that of the insulating sleeve.
We completely avoid this. way the tensions due to key dif ferences in the. expansion and contraction of the parts during the operation of the spark plug, without danger of the insulating sleeve crushing, shattering or flaking.
The main part b "of the body of the candle is in the shape of a box and is pierced with openings or windows b", to reduce the mass and facilitate the circulation of air in the lateral direction inside and out of it. interior space of the candle. A hexagonal bearing is used for key manipulation of the spark plug, as usual.
At its outer end, the. upper insulating bush d rests on the support cap e, la. main part F of the body of the spark plug being bored to a larger diameter to provide a shoulder b4 on which the cap e is supported.
The central electrode consists of a metal rod g, threaded at one of its ends and provided with. its other end of the head gI in the form of a mushroom, which bears, by means of the aforementioned conical seat, against the lower end surface of the insulating sleeve b; this head g 'is. knurled or serrated at its periphery at g2 so as to provide multiple bursting points of the sparks between this head and the threaded pipe a 'of the body of the spark plug.
The rod g passes through an axial hole of the insulating sleeve b; this rod is left uncovered in the internal space included in the part b2 of the body of the spark plug, and passes upwards in an axial hole of the upper insulating sleeve d, above which it is provided (fi.-.? ) an elastic washer g3, a tightening nut g4 and a nut g ", forming an electrical terminal.
To increase its. key surface heat radiation, the. discovery part of the. lon gueur of the. key rod the central electrode is provided with a thread, formed by the pro longe-ment of that provided at the outer end of this rod receiving the nut g4. In addition to this, it is also provided with an auxiliary means of radiating heat or cooling.
This means consists here of a cooling sleeve fi, made of aluminum, screwed onto the rod g, this sleeve comprising fins li. ' to increase the radiating surface; these fins are directed radially towards the windows b ". As the addition of the sleeve li to the central electrode reduces its distance from the part b = of the body of the spark plug, the latter is lined with an internal coating f , preferably in mica, with openings f ', coinciding with the windows M of the body of the candle,
but key free passage section lower than these; this insulating coating can be held in position by the periphery, folded down, of the cap c. as shown in fig. 2.
E2 openings are provided in the cap e to allow the. air circulation in or out of the interior of the spark plug. As the upper insulating sleeve d is freely exposed to the air to ensure its cooling. and as the heat is radiated to the. times of the. ti.ce of the electrode. center and the body of the spark plug before reaching the points where these parts are in contact with the. insulating sleeve d, the temperature of this one never reaches a high value.
Likewise, the tubular part b '(the key body the spark plug is sufficiently cooled by the circulation of air and the hexagonal bearing c remains comparatively cold.
The only gaskets subjected to a wrench tightening pressure by heating are the conical seats between the insulating sleeve b and the bulb co 'of the spark plug, and between the lower end of this insulating sleeve is the head of the central electrode. As these gaskets can be made up of ground surfaces or else dresées, without a gasket, the spark plug can be frequently disassembled for cleaning or the replacement of certain components, without compromising its gas tightness, when she went up again. In addition, the. low temperature, at which the central and outer parts are kept, reduces the degree of expansion and contraction of these parts.
The spring washer g 'serves to hold the key rod the central electrode under tension in a resilient manner and allows any expansion or contraction which may occur.
The central electrode and the insulating sleeve b constitute in a way a pair of valves subjected to a spring action, arranged along the same file axis as the other and constantly kept closed; the insulating sleeve b and the head of the central electrode both having the. cone shape where they come into contact with their seats, an automatic centering effect is achieved, to ensure a uniform width key the gap at the key bursting points between the sparks. head of the center electrode and the outer electrode of the body. candle.
In the variant of FIG. 4, the outer insulating sleeve d is supported by an elastic cap e 'consisting of a springy elastic washer, the elasticity of which compensates for expansion or la. contraction of all parts of the candle; consequently in this construction, the elastic washer g 'and the tightening wrench nut g4 are not necessary. Figs. 5 to 12 show means for setting the interval at the bursting points of the sparks.
In the case of fig. 5 to 8, the end of the tube al of the body of the spark plug comprises a metal ring j, made of nickel for example, the inner periphery of which has the shape of a series of cams j '; the. key head the central electrode is provided with either an equal number of teeth or protrusions i (end.
5 and 6), or (as shown in fig. 7 and 8) of a series of cams ii, the pitch of which corresponds to that of the cams of the ring j. By partially rotating the central electrode, the distance between the spark bursting tips can be varied between determined limits. The metal ring j can be attached to the tubing of the. candle by being embedded in a bore j 'thereof, whose wall on lead is folded, crimped or pushed back over the ring to keep the mother in position.
In fig. 9 and 10, the. head g 'of the central elec trode has radial lugs i, while the end of the tube al of the spark plug has protrusions j3 alternating with the lugs i; the interval between the two series of protrusions can thus be adjusted by partially rotating the central electrode.
Figs. 11 and 12 show another variant, in which a metal ring j 'is driven into a groove j' hollowed out â. inside the tubing a @ the body of the. candle, this groove having a curved or rectangular section, as shown respectively on both sides of the tu bulure a ', to. fig. 12.
The ring j4 is provided with an arm key I arranged in an appropriate relative position with respect to the head g 'of the electrode.
An important result obtained by the use of the insulating sleeve b in silica and by the construction of the. outer part b 'of the body of the candle, with the side windows, is that the discharge at the electrodes of the candle and the flame of the explosion can be seen through the windows of the body of the candle. This allows the spark plugs to be monitored by a simple examination when a poor ignition is suspected and also allows carburetor and other adjustments to be made by an inexperienced operator, as the results of these adjustments are immediately visible to the eye. the change in the color of the explosion flame.
In addition, the arrangement of the serrated head of the central electrode results in that the oil, which can be sprayed on this head, flows in the intervals between the adjacent teeth, without necessarily increasing the diameter of the head. the jagged head and without causing short circuits.
