Machine for digging, polishing and shaping watch stones etc. The object (the present invention is a machine for digging, polishing and shaping stones, such as those, which are used for pivots in watchmaking or for any other kind of precision instruments, compasses, counters etc., stones which may be (diamonds, sapphires or other hard or soft, precious or non-precious stones;
it has two horizontal rotating members, placed end to end and perpendicular to each other. one to the other the adjacent ends of these (organ beds carry, one a clamp in which the ivy engages to work, the other a grinding wheel at least in shape (the portion (the sphere. or rotary ganes which are carried by supports of which one is fixed and the other, which is the one which carries the rotary member provided with the grinding wheel, which can oscillate.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example only, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a view from above; La, fitg 2 is a side view of the ma chine, and fig. 3 is an end view; Figs. 4 and 5 are, on a larger scale than that (the preceding figures, cross-sections dles two rotary members of the machine; fi, g. 6 to 11 are details relating to the preceding figures.
The machine according to these figures comprises a frame 1 which is provided with supports 2, 3 and 4. The support 2 has, at its upper part, a bearing 5 with removable cover 6, in which is mounted a tubular member i of which, the two outer ends are threaded and cut internally in shape (the truncated cone. In each of the ends (this tubular member 7 are engaged frustoconical parts) 8, removable, (serve as a bearing for a rotating member 9,
provided (the removable sleeves 10 bearing against each of the internal ends of said parts 8, respectively .. The frustoconical parts 8 are held in position in the tubular member 7 by means of small screws 1.1 (fig . 4), tubular member \ ï which is closed at its ends by lids 1.2 and 13 each having a central orifice for the passage of the rotary member 9.
The latter, formed of a tu bular part 9 'inside which can smooth neck a rod 9 having a groove 14, clans which penetrates a screw 15 screwed into the part 9', is provided at one of its ends of a clamp 16 screwed on the rod 9ê which is used for the man # uvre of said clamp. The rod 9 carries, at its end opposite to the clamp 16, a washer 17 which serves for its ma nutention; a spring 18 is supported. on the one hand, against a ferrule 19. fixed on the washer 17, on the other, against the part 91. The part 9Ú is provided with a pulley 20. actuated when the machine is in operation by a motor device, not shown in the accompanying drawing, pulley 20 which is fixed to the part 9Ú by means of a screw 21.
The frustoconical pieces 8, which serve as bearings for the rotary organ 9, have, over their entire length a slot 8Ú (fig. 6) as well as grooves 8ê, which gives these parts a certain elasticity and allows them to adapt better to the housings provided for them in the ends of the tubular member 7. They form between them with the removable sleeves 10, a chamber 22, into which is introduced a lubricant which is used for lubricating the rotating member and its bearings. Between pulley 20 and. the cover 12 is arranged a disc 23 having a central orifice 23Ú. larger than the diameter of the part 9Ú, and a groove 24, clans which engages the end 25Ú of a rod 25, disc which we will see the utility below.
On the cover 13 is fitted a second cover 26 presenting a tubular extension 26Ú in which the rotary member 9 passes. This second cover has the effect of increasing the tightness of the end of the member. tubular 7. on which it is mounted. The supports 3 and 4 (fig. 1 to 3) are mounted in slides provided on the frame 1. on which they are fixed by screws 27, 28 shown in dotted lines in fig. 3.
In this supports is mounted a shaft 29 (fig. 7) having at its two ends cylindrical parts 30 and 31 which are arranged on the same axis and, in its middle part, a part 32 which is eccentric with respect to the parts 30 and 31, which makes it possible, as will be seen below, by turning the shaft 29 by hand, to raise or lower the support 49, as needed. The longitudinal play of this shaft 29, in supports 3 and 4, is adjusted by means of screws 33 and 34 which are screwed in threaded parts of these supports and each have a head 35, 36 drilled with holes for their tightening, respectively. .
The eccentric part 32 of this shaft has a shoulder 37 which is produced on the shaft, at one end of said eccentric part and at the other end of this same part, a pitch (the screw 38 by means of which a removable hague 39, having a median ridge can be held using a nut 40. Against this ring 39 is supported the end 39ê, in the form of a bevel, of a rod 39 ' mounted in a bearing 2 'provided towards the lower part of the support 2 and held in contact, against the ring 39 by means of a spring 393.
The support. 41 can oscillate on the eccentric part of the shaft 29 and is provided with a counterweight 42 fixed on the support: 41. by means of an arm 43 of circular shape (fig. 2) which has a recessed part of circular shape Also, in sight (allow the operation (the counterweight 42 which can oscillate on a screw 44 fixed to the support. 41. The latter presents at its upper end a bearing with a cover 't9.' removable in which is mounted a tubular member 45 (Fig. 5 ) , of identical shapes to the tubular member 7 seen above.
This tubular member 45 is threaded at both ends, and closed by vercles' Î6, 47 covers having a central orifice for the passage of a rotary member 48 provided with. one of its ends of a threaded rod Wd on which the grinding wheels are fixed. The threaded rod 49 is fixed on a small cylindrical rod 50 engaged in a housing. 51 foresaw.
said end of the rotary member 4S clui carries at its other end a pulley 52 which is fixed thereto by means of a screw 53. In each of the ends of the tubular member 45, having a shaped housing (the truncated (the cone, are engaged frustoconical pieces 54, 55, identical to the pieces b seen above, and which, like them, have a longitudinal slot 541, 551 as well as grooves, also longitudinal, which are not visible in the drawing and which are intended to give the elasticity to these parts, which are held in position by screws 56, 57. Removable sleeves 72, 73 bear against these frustoconical parts. The cover 46 carries a cover 74 having a tubular part.
The shaft 29 is provided with a crank 58 fig. 2 and 3) which bears against the shoulder 37 of said shaft and is fixed to it by means of a nut 59. This crank has a groove 60 in the form of a circular arc in which a rod engages. 61 which serves him (the guide and which is fixed on the support 4, (presents for this purpose ears 62 between which the rod 61 engages. A lever 63, pivoting on a screw 64, fixed to the frame 1, is intended for the operation of the support 41 which has, for this purpose, a groove 65 in which engages a rod 66 fixed on the lever 63.
The support 41, towards its lower part, is provided with a spout 67 (fig. 2) which can come to rest on the head of a screw 68 mounted on a rod 69 which allows to move the screw 68 relative to the position occupied by the support 41. The spout 67 of the support 41 is used to hold the latter when the machine is at rest.
A box 70 is mounted on a rod 71. fixed to the support 2 on which it can smooth, the box which is intended to collect either the debris (the stone in work, or the substance that is sent to the grinding wheel, to aid in the work (the latter, a substance which may be key diamond powder for example. In the latter case, the diamond powder to which a certain quantity of oil has been added, for example, is brought to the grinding wheel by a rod 72 (fig. 10 and 11) which presents towards its lower end, a longitudinal recess in the form of a channel. It is suspended freely from a support 73, fixed to the box 70 and its lower end rests against the key posterior part that of the grindstones which is in action.
By its rotational movement, the grinding wheel in action pulls, as and when required, the oil and the diamond powder which is suspended therein.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The stone for digging, shaping or polishing is placed, through the opening in charge of the machine, in the clamp 16. The worker, pressing with the palm of the hand against the washer 17, compresses the spring 18 and slides the rod 92 in the tubular part 9 ', which releases the clamp 16, whose jaws move apart, due to their elasticity and allows the introduction. between these jaws, of the stone to be worked. By releasing the washer 17, the spring 18 brings the pin 92 back to the position in which it is shown in the drawing, the jaws (the clamp close and the stone is securely held in place.
The worker sets in motion the motor devices actuating the pulleys 20 and 52 of the rotary members 9 and 48 which start to rotate. By the operation of the weight 42, it will bring the ## uppo.rt 'it into the position in which it is. represented in fi, -.
2, so as to say one of the grindstones which are mounted on the threaded rod 49, come to work with the stone held in the clamp 16 and will adjust by means of a key the crank 58 and the lever 63 both the height of the support 41 due to its position in relation to the axis of the rotary organ 9.
In fact, by rotating the crank 58 in one direction by hand, the worker turns the shaft 29 so as to raise the support 41, for example. and, by turning it in the other direction, it will lower the said support., maneuvers which will correspond to the kind of work that the machine will have to perform. By means of the lever 63, it. can laterally move the support 41, so as to bring that of the grinding wheels. climbs. on rod 49, which he will need.
As the axes of the two rotary members are perpendicular to each other and the grinding wheels mounted on the threaded rod 49 of the rotary member 43 are portions of a sphere, the hollows obtained in the stones are perfectly spherical. The threaded rod 49 can carry several wheels, as is shown at the fing. 1 and it is possible, by means of the lever 63, to bring one or the other of these grinding wheels into contact with the stone to be worked. To do this, it will suffice to leave the required clearance in the shaft 29 in bearings 3 and 4, leaving, by means of the screws 33 and in accordance with the space necessary for the movements of the shaft 29.
The rotary members 9 and 48 are lubricated by means of (the lubrication chambers included between the tapered parts arranged in the tubular or ganes 7 and 4). This lubrication is in fact due to the longitudinal slots provided in said frustoconical parts. The disc 23, carried by the rod 25 fixed to the support 2 '. Acts as a brake for the rotary member 9 when the worker in charge of the The ma- chine opera- tion wants to install a stone in the clamp 16.
Pressing the palm and the hand against the washer 17, he will grasp the edge of the disc 23 with his fingertips, exerting a certain traction on it which will have the effect of causing this disc to rub against the shoulder of the pulley 20, and this pressure will suffice to stop it and, consequently, the rotary member 9, the belt passing over the pulley 20, then sliding on the latter as long as the disc 23 has not been released by the worker. As soon as the stone is placed in the clamp 16, the worker will release the disc 23 and the belt will again drive the pulley 20.
The end 39ê of the rod 391 taking abutting against the ring 39, mounted on the shaft 29 of the support 41, serves as a stopper for said support Said end, according to the movements which are communicated to the support 4l, by means of the lever 63, will come to bear on one or the other of the faces of the ring 39, passing over the leading edge thereof and will hold the support in a determined position.
The oscillating movements of the support 41 are controlled by the counterweight 42 which will suffice to bring by hand in one direction or the other to engage the grinding wheel with the stone to be worked, or to move it away from it. against weight giving in addition the pressure of the grinding wheel against the stone, pressure which can be varied by modifying the position of the counterweight.
By the fact (the eccentricity of the part 32 of the shaft 29, the grindstones can be brought together on the rod 49 of the rotary member 48, at various heights relative to the stone placed in the clamp 16 , and we can work said stone on these edges for example, by maneuvering the crank 58 in the desired direction.
The shapes and dimensions of the various parts of the machine may differ from those shown in the accompanying drawing.
