Procédé pour la fabrication de prismes et installation pour la mise en @uvre de ce procédé. L'objet de la présente invention est un procédé pour la fabrication de prismes et une installation pour la mise en oeuvre de ce pro cédé. Le procédé consiste à découper préala blement, dans une matière transparente, des prismes parallélipipédiques de dimensions pré déterminées, chacun d'eux respectivement étant amené ensuite, par des taillages consé cutifs, à la forme de prisme triangulaire et sectionné alors dans le sens de sa plus grande dimension et à un calibre déterminé, en un certain nombre de prismes triangulaires à ba ses parallèles;
La fig. 1 est une vue en perspective d'un prisme parallélipipédique, correspondant à la première phase du procédé; La fig. 2 est une vue en perspective égale ment d'un prisme triangulaire, correspondant à la seconde phase du procédé, prisme qui sera sectionné selon sa longueur, opération correspondant à la troisième phase du pro cédé; Les fig. 3 et 4 montrent, en vue latérale et en bout, une des tiges sur laquelle est collé l'un des prismes triangulaires amené au cali bre déterminé; La fig. 5 est une vue en perspective d'un prisme terminé; Les fig. 6 et 7 représentent, en vue laté rale et en bout, le dispositif servant au tail- lage des prismes triangulaires;
Process for the manufacture of prisms and installation for the implementation of this process. The object of the present invention is a process for the manufacture of prisms and an installation for the implementation of this process. The process consists in cutting out beforehand, in a transparent material, parallelepiped prisms of predetermined dimensions, each of them respectively then being brought, by consecutive cuts, to the shape of a triangular prism and then cut in the direction of its largest dimension and of a determined caliber, in a certain number of triangular prisms with parallel bases;
each of these is glued, by its large face, on a support and its two other faces are shaped into spheroidal segments of the same radii and centers located in the plane equidistant from the bases of the prism, by a hollow rotating grinding wheel of the form cylindrical inside which the prism has an oscillatory movement by means of the support; these segments are then polished by means of a rotating grinding wheel in the form of a portion of a hollow sphere with a radius equal to the radius of the spheroidal segments.
The installation for the implementation of the process comprises a flat rotating grinding wheel in soft metal, on the front face of which is encrusted with diamond powder and in front of which can oscillate an arm formed so as to be able to support at least one prism. parallelepiped, arm which is mounted on a vertical cylindrical body capable of rotating on its vertical axis and provided with a micrometric device allowing the prism to be brought at a desired angle with respect to the front face of the grinding wheel, for its cutting at the triangular prism shape, a hollow rotary grinding wheel of cylindrical shape, in soft metal, on the inner face of which is encrusted with diamond powder and which is mounted at one end of a rotating shaft,
mounted on a support which can move along the longitudinal axis of said shaft, actuated by an external device, grinding wheel inside which, by means of a rod on which is fixed, by its large face, a triangular prism, and which -is mounted on an oscillating support, said prism can be brought for the cutting of its other faces to the form of spheroidal segments, the installation also comprising a rotating grinding wheel in the form of a portion of a hollow sphere with a radius equal to the radius spheroidal segments, for polishing faces in the form of spheroidal segments.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, various phases relating to the process as well as part of the installation for implementing the process.

Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11 show, in side view, end view and horizontal view, the device used for shaping the prisms; Fig. 12 is a side view of the device used for polishing the prisms; Fig. 13 is a plan view of a chisel serving to cut the grinding wheel in the form of a portion of a sphere employed in the device shown in FIG. 11.
The process consists in cutting out beforehand, in a transparent material, glass for example, a series of parallelepipedal prisms, one of which, a, is shown in FIG. 1, prism which is then brought by two subsequent cuttings, with a view to forming two inclined faces, on one of the large faces of the parallelepiped prism, to the shape of a triangular prism a1 shown in FIG. 2, the length of which is cut out a series of triangular prisms with parallel bases a2 of predetermined caliber, which are shaped, then polished as will be seen below, so as to be brought to the shape represented by fig.
5, a3 prisms having two faces in the form of spheroidal segments.
The device for implementing the method comprises a glass cutting device, which is not shown in the accompanying drawing, any glass cutting device that can be used for this purpose. The parallelipipedic prisms a being cut, one of these is placed on the cutting machine shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 and in which b is a rotary grinding wheel mounted on an axis b1 arranged in a bearing b2 and rotated by means of a pulley b3 which receives its rotational movement by a transmission belt not shown in the drawing.
The rotating grinding wheel b is formed of a circular plate made of soft metal, copper for example, on the front face of which diamond powder is encrusted. The machine has, moreover, a member c, linked by means of screws c2 on two oscillating supports c1 which are linked by means of other screws c2, identical to the first ones, on a shaft c3 which can rotate freely by bearing the 'organ c between two screws c4 and c5, carried by supports c6.
The member c comprises, at one of its ends, a cylindrical body c7 on which is mounted a micrometric device c8 which can be operated by means of the rod c9 for view of a thumbwheel c10. On the micrometric device c8 is fixed a support d having a slide d1 on which can move as needed a mandrel d2 provided with a notch in which is disposed the parallelelipiped prism a.
The movements of the organ c, which can move longitudinally with respect to the shaft c3 while being able to oscillate around the latter, are controlled by the levers e and e1 respectively, which are set in motion by the worker serving the cutting machine, the amplitude of movement = longitudinal of the member c being determined by means of stop screws e \ mounted on ul arm e3, the number of which is 5 in the embodiment shown, screws stop which one or the other, according to need, can abut against the head of an arm e4 which can move on one of the oscillating supports c1.
The parallelepiped prism has, by two consecutive cuts, to form the two faces opposite to the large face, which is obtained by a simple change of position of the parallelepiped prism in the notch of the mandrel d2, is brought to the shape of the triangular prism a1 and is sectioned into a number of triangular prisms a with parallel bases (fig. 2).
Each of these latter is then fixed, by its large face, by means of an adhesive material, shellac for example, on a support which, in the embodiment shown, is a rod f (fig. 3 and 4) of a certain length, having two portions f1 f2 of square section, the usefulness of which will be seen below, separated by a cylindrical portion f3, the rod of which the portion f4 of one end, of section because it is smaller than the portions f1 f2. has a beak f5 against which the triangular prism a2 rests.
This rod provided with a triangular prism a2 is mounted on the apparatus shown in FIGS. 8, 9 and 10 of the accompanying drawing, with a view to shaping the two faces of said prism, opposite to the large face, apparatus which comprises a rotary shaft g mounted on a support g1 disposed on a slide g2, on which the support g1 can be brought to various positions and fixed there by means of a screw g3. The slide g2 is arranged on a base plate g1. The rotating shaft g is provided with a train of pulleys g5, of various diameters, and rotates between a bearing g6 provided on the support g1, and a ball g7 held in place by a screw g8 placed on the support g1, l 'ar bre g and the screw g8 having at their adjacent ends recesses at the radius of the ball g7.
This rotary shaft has, at its free end, a thread g9 onto which is screwed a sleeve h which carries a grinding wheel h1 made of soft metal, copper for example, of hollow cylindrical shape, on the inner face of which is encrusted with diamond powder. In a direction perpendicular to that of the shaft g, near the end of the latter which carries the grinding wheel h1, is mounted a support i which can also move on a slide i1 disposed on the base plate g4 and be there fixed by means of a screw i2.
This support carries a shaft k, the axis of which is disposed in the same horizontal plane as the axis of the shaft g and which is perpendicular to the latter, ar bre k on which is mounted a micrometric device, formed of two arm l l1, one of which, 1, can oscillate in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the shaft k, on the end of the latter, and the other, l1, of which can wink in another plane perpendicular to the same direction, but on an axis m arranged on the arm l in a slide m1 and which can be moved in height by a micrometric screw m2 provided with a button l2 for its handling.
The rod f, at the end of which is bonded a triangular prism a2, is arranged at the free end of the arm l1, its portions f1 f2 of square section engaging in notches provided on said end of the arm l1 and is held in position by a spring n (fig. 9 and 10), hinged for example on the arm 11. The latter is provided, at one of its ends, with a spout l4 on which is placed a micrometric screw provided with a button 13 for its handling, screw which rests on a spout l5 of the arm l and means of which it is possible to bring the arm l1 in various positions on the shaft m and very precisely adjust the height displacement of the end of the rod f by the rotation of l1 on m.
In this way, we can bring the plane parallel to the bases of the prism a2 and equidistant from these bases, the plane in which is the center of the spheroidal segments of the same radius to be shaped on the faces of the prism, to coincide with the vertical plane passing by the key axis the shaft k. The key radius, the grinding wheel h 'being equal to the radius of the spheroidal segments, this grinding wheel will make it possible to bring successively, .each of the two faces opposite to the large face of the prism a2, to the shape of a spheroidal segment.
Indeed, one of said faces of the prism a, having been shaped in the form of a spheroidal segment, it will suffice to turn the rod f about its axis by an angle of 90 in the notch provided on the arm 11, to bring the second face, opposite the large face of the prism a2, into contact with the grinding wheel h1, for shaping this second face to the shape of a spheroidal segment. The micrometric device, provided with an antagonist spring o1, is provided with stop notches not shown in the drawing, limiting the amplitude of the oscillatory movement given by the worker working on the device, by means of the handle o .
After shaping the two aforementioned faces of the prism a2, the latter is detached from the rod f, then glued back onto another rod whatever conch and whose shape does not matter, and then treated for the polishing of its faces on the machine shown in fig. 12. This machine comprises a grinding wheel p made of hard metal, for example tin, in the form of a portion of a hollow sphere, mounted on a rotary axis p1, provided with pulleys p2, and which is placed on a support. p3. This grinding wheel p is hollowed out by means of a chisel q (fig. 12) having, at one of its ends, a circular plate q1 which makes it possible to bring the grinding wheel p exactly to the shape of a portion of a hollow sphere.
The radius of the latter being the same as that of the spheroidal segments shaped on the faces of the prism a2, it will suffice, the grinding wheel being in rotation, to bring those of the side faces of the prism a2, shaped and which remain to be polished, by contact with the internal surface of the grinding wheel p, surface on which is brought by any device and which is not shown in the appended drawing, diamond powder unbound in a binder substance, oil for example , and which aims to polish said faces of the prism. The inner surface of the spherical portion-shaped grinding wheel, which may be hemispherical, may be ridged or provided with housings of any shape, in order to more easily retain the binding substance in which the diamond powder is loosened.
