Device for superfinishing machined surfaces. Modern methods of examining the surface conditions of machined parts have revealed the relatively coarse character of surfaces which had undergone machining operations and were heretofore considered finished. We were thus led to the technique known today under the term of superfinishing so much to obtain a much more advanced finish of these
surfaces machined by the application of fine abrasives under relatively moderate pressures.
Tests carried out on engines have shown that the premature wear of certain components was due to the poor condition of the surface of the friction and journaling parts and that from this point of view, superfinishing provides a definite advantage.
The machines recently built to carry out this operation are in the form of heavy, complicated and expensive machine tools. In addition, in these machines,
the abrasive stone used for the superfinishing is applied to the part being treated by the pressure of coil springs arranged normally on the surface to be superfinished. This provision makes certain operations difficult or impossible; this is the case in particular with the superfinishing of the internal surface of a hazard.
The present invention relates to a positive superfinishing device for machined surfaces, comprising an abrasive member mounted on an elastic arm connected to a slide driven by a reciprocating movement and means for adjusting the orientation of said arm relative to said slide. . The object of the invention is to make it possible to give the abrasive member all the desired orientations and to obtain the superfinishing both of the external surfaces and of the internal surfaces,
thus achieving a superfinishing device of universal character.
An embodiment of the object of the invention and a variant are shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a superfinishing device constituting this embodiment and shown in the position which corresponds to the superfinishing of a cylindrical outer surface.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation and in vertical section, on a larger scale, of this device.
Fig. 3 is a partial section of the positive say along line III-III of FIG. 2. In this fig. 3, the line II-II represents the trace of the section plane of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view in projection and in horizontal section of the device.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of FIG. 4. Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are partial perspective views similar to FIG. 1 representing the device in various applications.
Fig. 9 is a schematic view of the aforementioned variant.
The superfinishing device shown comprises a frame 1 formed of a thick vertical sheet provided at its base with a base 2 made of thick iron, which can be clamped, for example, between the jaws 3 of a lathe carriage (FIG. 2). The fixing of the sheet 1 on the base 2 is ensured by a bolt 4, the head 4a of which can be adjusted in a T-section slide 5 that the base 2 has, the tightening being done by a nut 6 against the wing 7 of an angle iron. The other wing 8 of the angle iron is fixed to the sheet 1 by bolts 9 passing through oblong holes 10 allowing a certain height adjustment of the sheet 1.
In the middle part of this sheet is fixed a slide 11, [J-shaped with horizontal branches. In this slide can so move, parallel to the plane of the sheet 1, a slide to which is attached one of the ends of an elastic arm consisting of a leaf spring 12, carrying at its opposite free end the abrasive stone of superfinish -13.
The slide is in two parts, namely: on the one hand, a nut 14 guided in the slide 11 and held bare therein by four series of balls 15 arranged in grooves 16 in V of the smooth neck and the nut, on the other hand, a head 17 fixed on the nut 14 by prisoners 18 and nuts 19.
At the ends of the slide, the falling of the balls is prevented by plates 19a fixed respectively on the smooth neck and on the nut 14, the maximum amplitude of the travel of the nut in the slide thus being equal to the total of the clearances. between the balls. By needle screws 20, the nut 14 is secured to a rod 21 engaged in a hole of this nut and being able to slide freely at its opposite end in a small bearing 22 of a flange 23.
This flange is fixed to a base 24 which is itself secured to the slide 11. In its middle part, the rod 21 has a transverse slot 25 (FIG. 4) in which engages a finger 26 carried by a slide 27. This slide is fixed in an adjustable manner in a diametral groove 28 of a plate 29. The axis 30 of this plate is fixed in rotation to the end of the shaft 37. of a pneumatic motor 32 with a turbine, fixed by collars 33 on the upper part of the sheet 1.
(In the drawing, this engine, of which the inlet at 34 and the inlet adjusting ring at 35 can be seen, is of the type commonly used for driving small grinding wheels or abrasive rods.) plate 29 (which can be driven in phis or slower rotation by motor 32), slide 27 and. of its finger 26, eccentric uii shape, with adjustable eccentricity between zero and a few millimeters.
The offset is adjusted by unscrewing two screws 36 which fix the slider 27 in the diametral groove 28 of the plate 29, then moving the slider 27 by the desired value in said groove, then tightening. the screws 36, the displacement of the slide being made possible by the fact that the screws 36 pass through nières buttons 37 of this slide. An index 38 engraved on the slide and moving opposite a graduation 39 engraved on the plate makes it possible to read the value of the eccentricity obtained bare for the finger 26.
When this eccentricity is zero, the rotation of the shaft 31 of the pneumatic motor and of the plate 29 obviously does not transmit any movement to the rod 21 and to the slide 14, 17 connected to the stone-holder spring 12. When this eccentricity has a certain value, the finger. 26 describes a circle around the axis of the shaft 31 and, by acting on the edges of the slot 25 of the rod 21, transmits to this rod an alternating translational movement, the value of which depends on the eccentricity of the finger 26. This alternative translation is imparted by the rod 21 to the slide 14, 17 which moves on the balls 15 and finally to the stone 13 through the intermediary of the spring 12.
The head 17 has two grooves 40 and 40a with a T section in one of which is engaged and. slides the head of a bolt 41 serving to attach to this head the end of the leaf spring 12 which is then tightened by a nut 42. This arrangement allows various orientations of the leaf spring 12 and (the stone, as can be seen by comparing, for example, Figs. 1. and 6.
The base 2 of the frame 1 which carries all of the components being clamped on the carriage of a machine tool, for example on a carriage. turn, which can, as we know, take two translational movements, one parallel to the major axis of the machine tool, the other transverse, we have the means of approaching the device and the stone 13 of any circular surface centered on and driven by the machine tool.
In the example shown in fig. 1, the surface to be superfinished is one of the exterior cylindrical surfaces 43 of a part 44. The latter is fixed and centered on the tailstock of the lathe which drives it in rotation. By operating the lathe carriage, the stone 13 is brought against the surface 43 and the pressure of this stone on the said surface is graduated as desired, this pressure corresponding to a certain elastic bending of the spring. blade 12.
Beforehand, the position of the slider 27 will have been adjusted on the plate 29, so as to have the desired amplitude for the oscillations of the stone 13 which will take place alongside the generatrices of the cylindrical surface 43 to be superfinished. The stone 13 being in contact with the surface 43, we start, on the one hand, the lathe to rotate this surface about its axis, on the other hand, the pneumatic motor 32 to produce the oscillations of stone 13.
As the superfinishing progresses, the carriage is moved parallel to the axis of rotation of the part 44, that is to say to the generators of the surface 43.
In the example of FIG. 6, this involves superfinishing the internal surface of a bore 45 of the part 44; the leaf spring 12 carrying the stone is then arranged parallel to the axis of the part 44, which allows the method of fixing this blade on the head 17.
In the example of FIG. 7 the device performs the superfinishing of a flat face 46 perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the part 44. The base 2 of the frame 1 is then arranged on the carriage of the lathe so that the frame 1 is perpendicular to the rotation axis.
The example of fig. 8 does not differ from that of FIG. 1 that by replacing the stone 13 with a lapping 13a in the form of a gear wheel to obtain the lapping of the teeth of a gear wheel 47 to be superfinished which is dragged in rotation around its axis by the tower.
Finally, fig. 9 shows a variant of the device, intended for the superfinishing of small parts such as rollers. In this variant, the leaf spring 12 is in a horizontal plane. so that the stone 13 comes to rest on the top of the roller 48 to be super-finished. The leaf spring 12 is then fixed in the groove 40a which can be seen in the, fig. 1 to 8 under the sliding head 17.
The roller to be super-finished 48 is supported by its weight and by the pressure of the stone 13 against two rollers or rollers 49, 50. It is, moreover, driven in rotation by at least one of these rollers of which the axis is secured to the tailstock of the lathe, the other roller may be crazy. The axis of the roller 50 is journaled in a frame 51 which can be arranged so as to facilitate the installation of the rollers to be superfinished and their ejection after treatment.
For this, this frame 51 is articulated around the axis of the roller 49, so that by causing this frame 51 to pivot around said axis, the roller 50 is moved away from or brought closer to the roller to be superfinished 48. The frame 51 is held in position during the superfinishing operation by a resilient crutch 52. This crutch is articulated at 53 on the frame 51 and comes to bear by its lower end 54 against the frame 55 of the lathe. In i fig. 9, the organs are in the working position.
The pressure exerted by the spring blade 12 and also the reaction of the crutch 52 maintain between the stone 13 and the roller 48 the friction necessary for the superfinishing, at the same time as the stone 13 receives its parallel oscillation from the pneumatic motor. to the generatrices of the roller, that is to say perpendicular to the plane of FIG. 9. When the superfinishing of the roller 48 is finished, the stay 52 is moved away from its fulcrum 55 by making it pivot around the articulation 52.
The frame 51 is then lowered by pivoting around the axis of the roller 49. Lin finger 56, pivotally mounted at 57 on the frame 51 and a counterweight 58 tends. to be maintained in its position, comes to counter the roller 48 which is lowered while remaining in contact with the two rollers 49 and 50. By the speed of rotation cqu'il acquired, the roller 48 resting on the end the finger 56 is thrown against a ramp 59, integral with the frame 51 and is automatically ejected while rolling on this ramp.
By means of the same ramp, a new roller can be introduced, then immediately put back. the components in working position by means of the stand 52.
