Description
Process for the preparation of vanillin. The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of vanillin, according to which a mixture of guaiacol and formaldehyde is treated with a nitrose product.
It is possible, by this process, to obtain with excellent yields, of pure vanillin, which can be used to replace vanilla. It can be implemented in the following manner: The guaiacol and formaldehyde diluted with methyl or ethyl alcohol are mixed in equiiiiolecular proportions.
Then added to this mixture an alcoholic solution of hydrochloric acid and paranitrosodimethylaniline in the proportion of half a molecule for one molecule of guaiacol. The whole is heated for a few hours while continuing to y to introduce gaseous hydrochloric acid.
After cooling, the mixture is neutralized with dilute caustic soda, the alcohol is distilled off and the alcohol is extracted with benzol or para-amidimethylanifine ether. The alkaline solution of the remaining vanillin is then acidified and the vanillin is extracted from it by means of benzol or (the ether. This extract is distilled to separate the vanillin (the dissolving bran,
then the vanillin is rectified by vacuum distillation and finally gives crystals of melting point in water 81 ". with guaiacol employed, the yield of crude product reaches approximately 100./d.
