The present invention relates to a training apparatus for tennis of the portable type comprising a base surmounted by a rod for supporting a ball.
Numerous tennis training devices have already been proposed, in particular a portable device in which the base is made of cast iron to give the device sufficient weight and stability, which makes it difficult to transport.
In this known device, the ball is fixed on the support rod in such a way that the player's strike on the ball can only be frontal. If the shot is made at an angle, the ball support rod may be bent or even broken. In addition, no height adjustment is provided for the ball which, moreover, is connected to the rod by a fixed point so that the effect produced by the ball following a particular stroke of the player does not is not controllable.
The invention aims to remedy the drawbacks enumerated above and the apparatus which is the subject thereof is characterized in that the base consists of a weighted container, in that the ball support rod is mounted in the vicinity of its lower end on an elastic membrane so as to be able to be moved in any direction and in that the lower end of this rod is provided with a support member coming into contact with a guide surface hermetically closing said container below the flexible membrane.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the apparatus in partial axial section.
Fig. 2 is a detail view on a larger scale and in section.
Fig. 4 is a plan view on a larger scale of this variant.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of this variant.
The apparatus shown comprises a base 1 surmounted by a rod 2 bent at its upper part and provided with means for supporting a tennis ball 3. The base 1 consists of a metal or plastic container intended to be filled. water and having a self-closing filling and emptying orifice 4 and a relief valve 5 with bayonet control lever 6 making it possible to keep the valve open for emptying the container.
A partition forming a guide surface of generally concave shape closes the container 1. For this purpose, a ring 8 is fixed with the partition 7 hermetically by means of bolts on a peripheral flange of the container with the interposition of an elastic membrane 9 .
At the center of this membrane 9 is bolted a flanged sleeve 10 in which can slide a tube 11 carrying at its lower end a support member 12 coming into contact with the concave partition 7. The tube 11 is blocked in the sleeve 10 by a screw press 13.
The bent rod 2 is telescopically mounted in the tube 11 and fixed at the desired height by a screw press 14 similar to that designated at 13. This rod 2 is tubular as shown in the detail of FIG. 2, but could of course be full.
The upper end of the rod 2 ends in a fork 15 provided with two pins 16 on which the tennis ball 17 is pivotally mounted. For this purpose, the ball 17 is pierced with two diametrically opposed holes in each of which is inserted a sleeve 18 intended to receive the corresponding axis 16.
The operation of the device described is as follows:
The container is first assumed to be filled with water to give the apparatus the desired stability. The rod 2 is then adjusted to the height chosen by the player.
When the player hits the ball 17 with his racket with a certain effect, the ball rotates around its horizontal axis and the rod 2 is biased in a certain direction, thus moving the support member 12 on the guide surface of the ball. concave partition 7. The elastic membrane 9 allows movement of the rod 2 in any direction and always returns this rod to its initial vertical position as shown.
To easily transport the device, the water is emptied from the container
I by opening the relief valve 5 by means of the handle 6 after having inserted a drain pipe in the port 4.
In the variant shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the ball 19 is rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis 20 forming the end of the rod 2 'inclined at 21 and bent at 22 as shown. A sleeve 23 passes through the ball 19 along a diameter and is retained on the axis 20 by a screw 24. A collar 25 integral with the axis 20 forms a stop for a flange 26 of the end of the sleeve 23 opposite to that retained by screw 24.
The advantage of this variant is that it allows the player to hit the ball 19 from both sides without being hampered by a support fork.
The apparatus described has the advantage of being able to be easily transported due to its low weight when the water in the container is discharged.
It can therefore be placed on the tennis court in places where the player must normally strike the balls which are sent to him.
The player can use this device without the assistance of an assistant and can check himself the effect which he gives to the ball during the strike (sliced ball, topspin, flat). In the example shown in FIG. 1, the player hits the ball to the left, that is to say backhand or volley for a left-hander. Rod 2 could be rotated 180 if the player wants to hit the ball to the right.
In addition, the tension of the membrane 9 can be adjusted by applying more or less force the member 12 against the partition 7, so that the resistance of the ball to the strike can be modified according to the force of the player.
Thanks to the possible movement in all directions, the rod cannot be deformed when striking at an angle.
