Abstract

Clock part is machined from a steel contg. 0.2-0.4% C 1.5-2% Cr, up to 0.3% of Mo, 1-1.5% of Al, rest Fe. The machined part is nitrided with cracked NH3 for 48-80 hr. at 500-520 degrees C and is allowed to cool gently, then is finally polished. Pref. the steel contains 0.35% C, 1.8% Cr, 0.2% Mo, 1.1% Al, rest Fe; nitriding is at 510 degrees C for 72 hrs. and may reach a depth of more than 0.3 mm. The part may be a watch case, and a hard, nitrided surface is combined with retention of rustproof props. Hardness exceeding 1200 HV may be attained, better than hard chroming.
