A steel suitable for a cold worked, generator retaining ring with a grain size no larger than ASTM5 has the following percentage composition:- Mn 16.5-20.5 Cr 3.5-6 V more than 0.25-less than 1 C 0.4-0.6 P up to 0.07 S up to 0.015 Si up to 1 Fe the remainder After forging, the ring is solution treated at 1800‹ F to 2100‹ F for 2 to 4 hours before cold expansion.
