Description

Containers for storing, mixing and dispensing substances
The subject invention is a container for storing, mixing and dispensing substances.

Therapeutic substances are often delivered in the form of solutions or suspensions. However, certain such substances lose their effectiveness if they are stored as a solution or suspension. In such cases it is desirable to prepare the solution or suspension only when it is needed.

The aim of the invention is to create a container which allows two substances to be stored separately from one another until they are used and only then to be mixed and dispensed. The container according to the invention is characterized in that it is flexible, contains a sterile liquid and has a mouthpiece closed by a hollow pin, this pin being fitted with a liquid-tight friction fit in the neck of the container, that the mouthpiece with a screw seat on the neck of the container is at rest, and that a breaking organ is provided which forms a whole with the hollow pin, that furthermore the mouthpiece contains a substance intended for mixing with the sterile liquid, and that the breaking organ can be broken through by screwing in the mouthpiece by a predetermined pitch,

in order to enable a mixing of substance and liquid, and that means are present to facilitate the breaking off of the mouthpiece tip, an opening being exposed for the discharge of the mixed liquid.

In the drawing, an embodiment of the subject invention is shown, namely show:
1 shows a longitudinal section through the container according to the invention before the substances are mixed; and
FIG. 2 shows a longitudinal section through the container according to FIG. 1, the parts being shown in the position after they have been mixed.

A flexible container 3, which can contain a measured amount of sterile water or a physiological salt solution 4, is closed by a hollow pin 5. The latter sits tightly in the neck of the container. The container is expediently made of polyethylene. A mouth piece 6 is screwed onto the neck of the container. The same has a cylindrical extension 7 at its inner end which fits into the hollow pin 5. The inside of the mouthpiece contains a measured amount of a water-soluble antibiotic 8 in powder form, the bottom 9 of the cup-shaped hollow plug 5 preventing the powder from falling into the container 3. The cylindrical extension 7 sits so tightly in the pin 5 that no powder can pass between the two parts.

The mouthpiece 6 is screwed onto the container neck to such an extent that the extension 7 strikes the bottom 9 of the hollow pin 5.

For the purpose of storage, the container can be kept, for example, in a welded plastic bag, not shown. A plurality of containers and bags can be accommodated in cardboard packs, the latter of which can be made further sterile by irradiation with gamma rays. The entire container or only the contents can therefore be made available to the user in a completely sterile state.

When it is desired to deliver the antibiotic, the mouthpiece 6 is screwed down more firmly onto the neck of the container so that the extension 7 breaks through the bottom of the peg. As can be seen from FIG. 2, the bottom 9 falls into the liquid 4, as does the powder. The powder is mixed with the liquid by gently shaking the device. The outermost tip 10 of the mouthpiece can then be broken off along a weakening point, exposing an exit opening at the end of the mouthpiece. Once the antibiotic is in solution, it is essential that it is used as soon as possible as its effectiveness wears off very quickly once it has been in the mix for more than 12 hours.

It is therefore important to keep the powder and water separate until the time of use.

Infected body cavities can be rinsed with the antibiotic solution by holding the device in the same way as an injection syringe and compressing the lower part of the flexible container 3 so that the solution emerges from the mouthpiece. To make it easier to use, the free end of the mouthpiece is profiled at 11 so that a Luer syringe can be used for injections.
