Description

Process for improving the mechanical properties of cellulose-containing textiles Additional patent to main patent no. 383 325 The main patent describes a process for improving the mechanical properties of cellulose-containing textiles with the aid of ionizing radiation.

This is characterized in that an optionally modified cellulose-containing textile material is heated to at least 30 ° C. in the absence of a modifying agent for the cellulose during and / or after irradiation for the purpose of crosslinking carbon atoms of the molecular chains.

It has now been shown, surprisingly, that there are particularly favorable conditions for crosslinking and the lowest possible degradation of the cellulose when the cellulose-containing textile material to be irradiated has an increased moisture content.

The present invention therefore consists in a further development of the method according to the main patent and is characterized in that the textile material to be irradiated has at least 20%, preferably 30 to 40% relative humidity. The measure according to the invention has a particularly favorable effect when the irradiation is carried out in the presence of air.

Example 1 A conventionally pretreated cotton imitation fluffy fabric, which has a relative humidity of 35%, is exposed to a gamma radiation source (60C0) in the presence of air and a total dose of 6 X 105 X-rays irradiated into the tissue; it is then heated to 80 ° C. for about 5 minutes by means of a stream of warm air.

The treated fabric is insoluble, but still swellable in a conventional copper oxide ammonia solution and has - compared to the starting material - a greatly increased resistance to abrasion and an only slightly reduced tear resistance.

Example 2 A conventionally pretreated cotton Renforc6 fabric, which has a relative humidity of 40%, is exposed to a gamma radiation source (50C0) in the presence of air and a total dose of 8 × 10 5 X-rays in irradiated the tissue; then it is heated for 5 minutes by treatment in boiling water.

After this treatment, the fabric is insoluble, but still swellable in a conventional copper oxide ammonia solution and has - compared to the starting material, a greatly increased resistance to abrasion, with only slightly reduced tear strength.
