Process for the preparation of linear quinacridone of β-crystal phase It is known that linear quinacridone of the formula
EMI0001.0005
obtained by oxidation of the 6,13-dihydroquinacridone with sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonate in alcoholic sodium hydroxide solution, can be converted into a uniform crystal phase (SS phase) (American Patent No. 2,844,485).
This crystal phase is identified by certain lines in the X-ray diffraction diagram, which correspond to lattice plane spacings of 15.23, 7.55, 4.06 and 3.31A. In contrast to the raw quinacridone, which is dull red in color, the ss crystal phase of the quinacridone is a beautiful red-violet pigment that is considerably superior to the raw quinacridone in terms of lightfastness and color strength.
The known conversion of the dried crude quinacridone into the SS phase is carried out by grinding with an inorganic salt in the presence of 10 to 25 percent by weight of a liquid Koh lenwasserstoffes in a roller mill up to a particle size, which has a total surface area of at least 60 m2 / g of dye or by treating the dried raw quinacridone with aluminum chloride in, for example, nitrobenzene or tetramethylene sulfone (American Patent No. 2,844,485).
These known procedures therefore always require the crude quinacridone to be dried, without which conversion into the desired SS phase is not possible. They are therefore not applicable to the processing of moist pastes in which the raw hine acridone is already present in an extremely fine form that is very suitable for conversion.
Rather, the crude quinacridone must first be dried, with the individual particles inevitably becoming coarser, which is then achieved either by grinding with an inorganic salt in the presence of a liquid hydrocarbon or by heating with aluminum chloride in nitrobenzene or another Solvent must be reversed.
In the production of unsubstituted linear quinacridone by heating 2,5-dianilino-terephthalic acid in polyphosphoric acid, the linear quinacridone is extremely finely divided before drying.
It has now been found that linear quinacridone of the ss-crystal phase is obtained if moist crude quinacridone, as is obtainable in the condensation of 2,5-dianilinoterephthalic acid with polyphosphoric acid, with aqueous solutions of inorganic bases under pressure to 120 up to 200 C it heats:
a) in the presence of an organic solvent resistant to inorganic bases or b) in the absence of an organic solvent, and then the quinacridone subjected to the basic heat treatment with an organic solvent when using overpressure to 120 to 180 ° C. or without using overpressure heated to 100 to 180 C.
The procedure here is expediently so that aqueous pastes of the crude quinacridone are mixed with 8 to 12 times the amount by weight - based on 100% crude quinacridone - of a 5 to 20 weight percent aqueous solution of an inorganic base in a pressure vessel, advantageously with vigorous stirring, for several hours heated to 120 to 200 C.
As inorganic bases, for example, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate and ammonia can be used. Mixtures of the basic compounds mentioned above can also be used for the stated purpose.
In procedure (a), an organic solvent is added to the aqueous alkaline solution before the conversion of the raw quina cridone, that is, the basic heat treatment of the raw acridone is carried out at the temperatures mentioned in the presence of an organic solvent which is resistant to inorganic bases.
Examples of such organic solvents are mono- or polyhydric alcohols such as ethanol, propanol, butanol, glycol or partially etherified polyvalent alcohols such as diglycol, methylglycol, ethylglycol, butylglycol, ethyldiglycol or mixtures of the aforementioned solvents.
Appropriately, about the same amount by weight, based on 100% raw quinacridone, of organic solvent is added to the aqueous alkaline solution. After cooling, it is expediently washed neutral, treated with dilute acid, filtered off, washed and dried.
The moist presscake initially obtained after the basic heat treatment in the absence of an organic solvent according to procedure (b) is expediently treated with about the same amount by weight, based on 100% raw quinacridone, of an organic solvent in the pressure vessel at about 120 to 180 ° C. for a few hours , conveniently with stirring, heated, filtered off, washed and dried ge.
The applied quantitative ratio of moist press cake to organic solvent is not tied to the ratio 1: 1, but can fluctuate up or down depending on the solvent used.
When carrying out the solvent treatment without the use of excess pressure, it is expedient to proceed in such a way that the moist presscake subjected to the basic heat treatment is mixed with 5 to 10 times the amount by weight, based on 100% crude quinacridone, of an organic solvent with stirring and simultaneous distillation - tion of the water to 100 to 180 C, depending on the solvent used, heated. It is then allowed to cool, diluted with dilute acid or base or methanol, filtered off with suction, washed and dried.
In procedure (b), water-soluble or water-insoluble solvents, such as, for example, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, also aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic bases, monohydric and polyhydric aliphatic alcohols, phenols, ethers, carboxylic acid esters or carboxylic acid amides can be used as organic solvents.
The red-violet pigment of soft grain, which is available according to the process and which is present in the ss-crystal phase characterized above, is ideally suited for coloring paints and plastic masses and, in its coloring properties, its fastness properties and its color strength, is the same as that of dried and ground crude quinacridone clearly superior.
Example 1 200 parts by weight of 2,5-dianilinoterephthalic acid are added to 1000 parts by weight of polyphosphoric acid (prepared from 4 parts by weight of about 80% phosphoric acid and 5 parts by weight of PLO.) With stirring at temperatures between 90 and 120 ° C. Heated to 125 to 130 C for 1 hour. After cooling to 90 ° C., the reaction mixture is added to 3000 parts by weight of ice water with stirring and left to stand overnight.
The crude quinacridone is filtered off with suction, washed neutral with water and heated to 90 to 100 for 5 minutes with ten times the amount of 1 percent strength by weight sodium hydroxide solution to remove unreacted dianilinoterephthalic acid. After vacuuming and washing neutral, the crude quinacridone is in the form suitable for the conversion.
50 parts by weight of 100% raw quinacridone (in the form of the moist presscake) are heated with 50 parts by weight of sodium hydroxide and 450 parts by weight of total water (including that contained in the presscake) in an autoclave for 3 hours with stirring. After cooling, it is filtered off with suction and washed neutral with hot water.
The moist press cake is heated with 450 parts by weight of total water and 50 parts by weight of dimethylformamide to 180 for 3 hours under pressure and with stirring. After cooling, the quin acridone is filtered off, boiled with ten times the amount of 5 weight percent sulfuric acid for 5 minutes, filtered off with suction, washed neutral and dried in vacuo at 50 to 60. The red-violet quinacridone of the SS phase is thus obtained in a fine distribution suitable for coloring paints and plastic compositions.
Example 2 50 parts by weight of the crude quinacridone prepared according to Example 1 in the form of the moist presscake are heated with 500 parts by weight of 10% ammonia (including the water contained in the presscake) for 3 hours in an autoclave with stirring.
The neutral washed red-violet quinacridone is heated to 180 with 450 parts by weight of total water and 50 parts by weight of dimethylformamide for 5 hours, filtered off, stirred with ten times the amount of 5% sulfuric acid for 5 minutes at 90 to 100 ° C. and after suctioning off and washing neutral in vacuo at 50 Dried up to 60 C. The quinacridone is obtained in a finely divided ss phase.
Example 3 50 parts by weight of the crude quinacridone prepared according to Example 1 are heated as a moist press cake with 450 parts by weight of total water and 50 parts by weight of soda in an autoclave at 170 ° C. for 3 hours. The moist product, washed neutral, is then stirred with 450 parts by weight of total water and 50 parts by weight of N-methylacetamide for 5 hours at 180 ° C. in the autoclave.
The quinacridone, washed neutral, is heated to 90 to 100 ° C. for 5 minutes with ten times the amount of 5% strength sulfuric acid, filtered off, washed free of sulfate and dried in vacuo at 50 to 60 ° C. The ss phase quinacridone obtained in this way colors paints and plastic materials in red-violet tones.
Instead of treating the moist press kitchen with dimethylformamide or N-methylacetamide according to Examples 1 to 3, it can also be treated with ethyl diglycol, glycol, propanol, butanol, hexanol, phenol, quinoline, triethanolamine or diphenyl diphenyloxide .
Example 4 50 parts by weight of a moist crude quinacridone produced according to Example 1 are heated with 450 parts by weight of total water, 75 parts by weight of sodium hydroxide and 50 parts by weight of ethyl diglycol in an autoclave for 5 hours while stirring. The neutral-washed red-violet product is boiled with ten times the amount of 5% strength sulfuric acid, filtered off with suction and dried in a vacuum. The quinacridone is obtained in a pure ss phase and good fine distribution.
Example 5 50 parts by weight of a crude quinacridone produced according to Example 1 are heated to 150 for 3 hours with stirring in the form of the moist presscake with 450 parts by weight of total water and 75 parts by weight of potassium hydroxide. After suctioning off and washing until neutral, the red-violet quinacridone is heated to 130 with 300 parts by weight of ethyl diglycol while distilling off the water, filtered off, washed with methanol and dried in vacuo at 50 to 60.
The SS crystal phase obtained in this way is suitable for coloring paints and plastic materials.
Example 6 50 parts by weight of a crude quinacridone prepared according to Example 1 are heated to 150 for 3 hours as a moist press cake with 50 parts by weight of potassium carbonate and 450 parts by weight of total water (including that contained in the press cake),
Vacuumed and washed neutral. The water is distilled off by heating with 350 parts by weight of quinoline with stirring to 130. The red-violet quin acridone which has been filtered off and washed with methanol is boiled for 5 minutes with ten times the amount of 5% strength sulfuric acid, filtered off with suction and washed free of sulfate.
After drying at 50 to 60 in vacuo, it is in a finely divided ss-crystal phase. Instead of the treatment with ethyl diglycol or quinoline according to Examples 5 and 6, treatment can also be carried out with dimethylformamide, N-methylacetamide, malonic ester, dimethylaniline, nitrobenzene, dichlorobenzene or diphenyl diphenyloxide.
