<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the preparation of linear v-crystal phase quinacridone
From US Pat. No. 2,844,581 it has become known that the linear quinacridone of the formula
EMI1.1
which is obtained by oxidation of the 6, 13-dihydro-quinacridone with sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonate in alcoholic sodium hydroxide solution, can be converted into a uniform crystal phase (y phase). This uniform crystal phase is characterized by 3 intense and 4 weaker lines in the X-ray diffraction

correspond. The conversion into the y-phase is important because it is a bright blue-tinged red pigment which is clearly superior to the raw quinacridone in terms of the brilliance of the coloration, the fastness properties, especially the light fastness, and the color strength.
To produce the y-phase, according to the details of the USA patent, the dry crude quinacridone is ground with 4 to 9 times the amount of an inorganic salt in a roller mill until a surface of at least 60% is reached, then moistened with dimethylformamide and the whole thing then boiled with dilute sulfuric acid, the pigment isolated and dried. The salt milling can also be carried out in the presence of dimethylformamide. The known method involves grinding the dry quinacridone, i. H. in other words, a conversion into a fine distribution, without which a complete conversion into the desired y-phase is not possible.
It does not allow aqueous pastes in which the crude quinacridone is already in an extremely fine form, which is very suitable for conversion into a pure phase, to be converted directly into the desired phase. Rather, the individual particles must first be dried and thus inevitably coarsened, which then only has to be reversed by salt grinding.
Crude quinacridones which are suitable for conversion into the y-phase by the process according to the invention can, for. B. obtained by condensation of 2, 5-dianilinoterephthalic acid with polyphosphoric acid, anhydrous hydrofluoric acid, aluminum chloride or titanium tetrachloride in trichlorobenzene or in a sodium chloride / aluminum chloride melt and subsequent hydrolysis of the reaction products obtained. The linear quinacridone obtained by this process is in extremely fine distribution in the form of an aqueous paste before it is dried.
It has now been found that this crude quinacridone, present in the form of its aqueous paste, can be converted into its γ-crystal phase in a very simple manner without prior drying, by

the aqueous paste with organic solvents, except hydrocarbons and their halogen and nitro derivatives, heated for 1-5 hours to temperatures of 100 to 2000C while removing the water, the dye is filtered off, if necessary washed with lower-boiling solvents such as methanol or ethanol, and dried in vacuo .
It is advisable to proceed in such a way that the aqueous paste is introduced into a stirred vessel in which there is enough of a suitable organic solvent that an easily stirrable mixture is obtained and the water is distilled off over several hours with heating. When the water is removed, the temperature is increased and stirring is continued for a while. Depending on the type of solvent used, the mass is then added to water, dilute acid or methanol after cooling, and the bright red dye is suctioned off, washed, dried and pulverized. Following the procedure given, a bluish-tinged red pigment of very soft grain is obtained which is present in its y-crystal phase.
It is ideally suited for coloring lacquers and plastic masses, for the production of printing and coating colors, as well as for all other areas of application of organic pigments, and is in its coloring properties, its grain softness, its fastness and in the brilliance of the color the dried one and ground raw quinacridone.
The process according to the invention has the advantage over the process of US Pat. No. 2,844,581 that it allows the y phase to be produced directly without drying and salt grinding. Since salt grinding, in which 4 to 9 times the amount of an inorganic salt is used, can only be carried out with low throughputs due to the limited size of the roller mills, the present method is a valuable addition to the technology.
You can also use another method, e.g. B. according to the information in the USA patent
EMI2.1
or condensed according to Liebermann quinacridone. The melt is hydrolyzed. The precipitated product is filtered off with suction and washed with water. To remove acidic components, the filter residue can be diluted with
Alkali, optionally with the addition of ethyl alcohol, are boiled out. The product is then filtered off again and washed neutral with water. The moist crude quinacridone obtained in this way is stirred with 300 parts by weight of quinoline. The mixture is heated with stirring and the water is distilled off. When all the water has been removed, the mixture is heated to 180 ° C. for 3 hours. It is then cooled and the mass poured into dilute sulfuric acid.
The dye is filtered off with suction, washed with water, dried in vacuo and pulverized. A bright blue-tinged red pigment of the y-crystal phase is obtained, which colors paints and plastics in brilliant blue-tinged red shades with excellent fastness properties.
Instead of the quinoline, butanediol (1, 4) or butyrolactone can also be used with the same success.
Example 2: 100 parts by weight of a 20% strength aqueous paste of finely divided crude quinacridone, which is obtained according to the manner indicated in Example 1, are heated with 160 parts by weight of N-methyl acetamide with stirring and this over the course of a few hours Distilled off water. The temperature is then increased to 130 ° -1400 ° C. and stirring is continued for a few hours at this temperature. After cooling, it is diluted with water, filtered off with suction, washed well with water, dried in vacuo and pulverized. The bluish-tinged red pigment of the y-crystal phase obtained in this way is outstandingly suitable for coloring paints and plastic materials.
Instead of N-methylacetamide, e.g. B. glycol, glycol monomethyl or. monoethyl ether, glycerine, diglycol monoethyl ether, dimethylformamide or N-methylpyrrolidone, the same pigment is obtained in the y phase.
Example 3: 140 parts by weight of 2,5-dianilinoterephthalic acid with 1000 parts by weight of anhydrous hydrofluoric acid are heated for 4-5 hours at 1500C with stirring. Most of the hydrofluoric acid is distilled off and the residue is poured onto ice. The excess hydrofluoric acid is neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution, the pigment is then filtered off with suction and washed neutral with water. 300 parts by weight of the resulting aqueous 20% paste of crude quinacridone are stirred with 450 parts by weight of diglycol monoethyl ether and heated until the water has been removed.
The mixture is then stirred for a few hours at 130 ° -1400 ° C., the mass is then poured into water, filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried

and ground. The red crystal powder obtained in the y phase colors paints and plastics in bluish red shades of excellent fastness properties.
Instead of the above-mentioned aqueous paste you can also use z. B. use a paste obtained as follows:
200 parts by weight of 2,5-dianilinoterephthalic acid are condensed in a melt of 1000 parts by weight of aluminum chloride and 280 parts by weight of sodium chloride at 180 ° C. with stirring to give the linear quinacridone. The melt is hydrolyzed with 5000 parts by weight of ice and 500 parts by weight of 1 oily hydrochloric acid. The dye suspension is filtered off with suction and washed neutral with water.
Example 4: 100 parts by weight of the 20% strength paste of crude quinacridone described in Example 1 are introduced into a stirred vessel in which there are 150 parts by weight of molten phenol. The mixture is heated with stirring for several hours and the water is distilled off. The temperature is then increased and stirring is continued at 130-140 ° C. for 1 hour. After cooling, it is diluted with methanol, the mass is filtered off with suction, washed well with methanol, dried in vacuo and pulverized.
A red pigment of the y-crystal phase is obtained which colors paints and plastics in bright blue-tinged red shades.
Instead of phenol, propionic acid, benzyl alcohol, pyridine or aniline can also be used.
