EMI2.1
Process for the preparation of di-benzoxazolyl-ethylenes
According to the main patent, a, -di [aryloxazolyl- (2) i-ethylenes can be prepared by cyclizing o-oxy-arylamines with malic acid at an elevated temperature in a molecular ratio of 2: 1 with the aid of catalysts, in particular boric acid, with simultaneous cleavage of water from the rest of the malic acid.
It has been found that di-benzoxazolyl ethylenes of the formula
EMI1.1
wherein A is an optionally substituted o-phenylene radical, by cyclization of o-oxyaminobenzenes with malic acid in a molecular ratio of 2: 1 at elevated temperature and elimination of water from the remainder of the malic acid is particularly advantageous if the reactions are carried out in the presence of a phosphoric acid of the formula (2) Hn + 2PnOsn + i where n is an integer greater than 1, can be carried out.
The o-oxy-aminobenzenes used as starting materials can contain other substituents in the benzene nuclei, e.g. B. chlorine atoms, low molecular weight alkoxy groups such as ethoxy or methoxy, low molecular weight alkyl groups such as methyl or especially methyl.
To form 1 mol of the compound of the formula (1), a total of 5 mol of water are split off. As phosphoric acids of the formula (2), for. B. Polyphosphoric acids, including pyrophosphoric acid (n> 1) are used. The pyrophosphoric acid (n = 2) or the polyphosphoric acids (n> 2) can be obtained from orthophosphoric acid and phosphorus pentoxide in the appropriate proportions, e.g. B. so that an acid of the composition H4P207 or H6P4 013 results. For the rest, it can be left open whether the polyphosphoric acids are viewed as reaction products of orthophosphoric acid and phosphorus pentoxide or as dehydration products of orthophosphoric acid. A mixture of phosphoric acids of the formula (2) can also be used.
It is advantageous to work with an excess of phosphoric acid of the type specified, for. B. with five to ten times the amount of polyphosphoric acid, based on the total amount of starting materials. Further additives, such as catalysts or diluents in particular, are not required. If desired, air exclusion, z. B. in a stream of nitrogen or in a vacuum. The conversions take place z. B. at temperatures between 140 and 2009, useful around 1600.
Working up is very easy. After the reaction has ended, it is only necessary to dilute the mixture with water and the di-benzoxazolyl-ethylene compound precipitates and can be filtered off. In this way, the end products in question are generally obtained in a degree of purity which, optionally after being converted into finely dispersed form, allows them to be used directly as optical brightening agents.
In the following example, unless otherwise noted, the parts are parts by weight and the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
example
12.3 parts of 1-oxy-2-amino-4-methyl-benzene, 6.7 parts of malic acid and 200 parts of pyrophosphoric acid are heated to 1,400 for 1 hour while stirring. The temperature is maintained at 140 for a further hour and then increased to 1600 for 1 hour. The mixture is then stirred for 4 hours at 160 to 165, poured into 1 liter of water, the precipitated substance is suction filtered and dried.
About 13 parts of the compound of the formula are obtained in this way
EMI2.1
After recrystallizing once from dimethylformamide water, the slightly yellowish crystals melt at 182 to 183 ".
If polyphosphoric acid is used instead of pyrophosphoric acid, similar results are obtained.
