Method for retreading tires and installation for implementing this method The subject of the present invention is a method for retreading tires and also comprises an installation for implementing this method.
Until now, the retreading of tires consisted in applying to the tread of the casing or carcass of the tire a new tread and then placing the casing with this new band fixed in a mold where it was. subject to heat and pressure necessary to vulcanize this strip on said envelope.
A process is known where instead of applying the tread to the tire, it is placed in the mold after which the casing or carcass, the tread of which has been trimmed beforehand by means of a grinding or ripping machine. , is transported into the vulcanization mold.
In order to simplify the process, the licensee has already proposed an apparatus for retreading tires in which the retreading apparatus consists of a grinding mechanism having a support for holding the tire during the grinding operation in combination with means for supporting a mold in which the new tread is first placed so that immediately after the grinding operation the outer casing can be transported directly into the mold containing the tread.
In this device the outer casing is supported during the grinding operation by a threaded rod so as to be able to move axially when it is brought into engagement with the rasp of the polishing or grinding machine, the rod being arranged according to a vertical axis such that the plate carrying the tire receives an upward and downward movement. To facilitate transport of the tire at the end of the grinding operation, a support arm is provided for gripping the tire as a block and lowering it into position in the die or mold containing the new tread.
This device has given complete satisfaction in practice, but it requires a team of two men to operate it, one man having to follow the grinding operation and transport the tire by means of the support arm in the mold, while the another man is busy inserting the new tread into the mold. Although in practice the attributes of the two men may be altered somewhat, the man loading the mold being able to perform the transport operation while the other man places a new tire on the grinding machine bed, it was not possible to carry out the method and operate the apparatus with one man.
The present invention aims to remedy this drawback and the method comprising the grinding operation and the transport of the tire from the grinding machine to the mold can be performed by one man.
This method of recharging the outer casing of a tire, in which the beads of the casing are moved apart in order to flatten the tread, is characterized in that the casing is subjected in this condition to a grinding operation for the dres ser beforehand with a view to receiving a new tread, and in that the envelope, without releasing the heels is then transported to an annular mold, the release of the heels then being used to bring each other into engagement a new tread previously placed in the mold with the outer casing.
The installation for carrying out the tire retreading process comprises a frame comprising support means by means of which a tire to be retreaded can be mounted to rotate about a substantially horizontal axis and a spreader device for moving these beads apart. the casing when it is placed on this device in order to flatten the tread.
This installation is characterized in that grinding means are mounted on the frame to allow the tread when it is in the flattened position, to be raised beforehand in order to receive a new tread and also to allow the casing while it remains in the support means without releasing it from the spreader device to be transported in this flattened condition directly on the mold, the operation of releasing the tire from the clamping device bringing them into reciprocal engagement. envelope with tread.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation which the present invention comprises.

Fig. 11 is a sectional view of a detail showing one of the stapling or prong devices attached to the outer ends of the fixed and movable discs of the tire spreader device.
Referring first to FIG. 1, the installation comprises a frame or carriage S provided with casters W. Tire support means are mounted on the frame and generally designated 1, the tire to be retreaded being able to be supported in a vertical position. The support means with their horizontal axis comprise a spreading device to allow the walls of the outer casing to be separated from each other in order to bring the rolling strip into a flattened condition, which is necessary when rubber is trimmed from said tread prior to polishing or grinding. T indicates a tire in position.
A grinding mechanism is also mounted on the frame S, this mechanism being shown in phantom in B and comprises a rotary disc of the rasp type driven by an electric motor, the whole being carried by a tilting console around a vertical pivot. the on the side of the frame so that it can be brought into the active position and moved away from it. C indicates that a carriage also mounted on casters W ', this carriage comprising means by which a tire mold generally designated M can be mounted vertically with its axis xx aligned horizontally with the axis yy of the means of tire holder.
Referring also to fig. 2, the tire support means comprise a horizontal shaft 2 having a threaded portion 3 intended to engage with a nut 4 carried by a flange 5 on the end of a sleeve 6 which, in turn, is rotatably mounted in a bush 7 arranged in a horizontal bore 8 formed in the head of the frame S. A spider 10 is fixed to the outer end of the shaft 2, this spider comprising radial arms in the outer ends of which spaced holes are drilled 11 for fixing a ring 12 for engaging a tire wall or the bead.
A second ring 13 of U-shaped section is provided to cooperate with the ring 12, this ring 13 being removably fixed by means of wing nuts 14 to a disc (or to arms) 15 fixed to the sleeve 6 by means a screw 16. The parts 11 and 13 provide a support for the outer casing of a tire and in practice one tire bead is engaged by the ring 13, the other ring 12 serving to engage with the tire. bead or opposite wall of the tire.
To increase or decrease the axial separation between the rings 12 and 13, means are provided to block the sleeve 6 and prevent it from rotating. For this purpose, a locking pin 18 has a threaded end to engage with a threaded hole 19 drilled in the sleeve 6 to which the city plug has access through holes of larger diameter made respectively in the sleeve 7 and the head of the frame S.
When the locking pin 18 is in place, the sleeve 6 is prevented from rotating and therefore by rotating the nut 4, the shaft 2 can be moved in the axial direction to increase or decrease the separation between the spider 10 bearing. the ring 12 and the disc 15 carrying the ring 13. During the grinding operation, when the rasp is brought into action, the locking pin 18 is withdrawn and the assembly can rotate freely. With this arrangement, grinding is carried out using a disc whose diameter is larger than the width of the retreading area to be ground.
The disc is mounted to rotate about an axis located in a plane offset from the center of the tread when the entire width of the tread is simultaneously ground with the tire rotating at a certain speed with respect to the value of the offset and without a braking mechanism being necessary.
Referring now to Figs. 5 to 8 which illustrate the preferred embodiment, the frame com takes a rectangular frame formed of longitudinal elements 15 'and end members 16' provided at each of the four angles with screw jacks, 17 'of so that during operation, the frame and the cabinet that it carries can be lifted into a position in which the rollers 18 'and a swiveling roll 18 "are spaced from the ground. A cross member 19' has a cross member fixed to it. vertical bracket 20 as well as an upright 21 respectively carrying the tire support means generally designated D, a hydraulic cylinder H and the grinding device 3.
The hydraulic cylinder H, as described below, acts on a mechanical control of the spreader device and is a variant of the screw mechanism operated by hand, shown in FIG. 2.
As can be seen in fig. 8, the console 20 has, fixed on one side, a support 20 'of section I which, together with the main console 20, provides a rigid support for a hydraulic cylinder 21' with its piston indicated in general in 2.2. The console 20 and a locking screw 22 'ensure that the overhang of the cylinder and the piston is fully supported.
Disks 23 and 24 are fixed with a collar 25 on the end of the cylinder of the ram and piston 22. The forward-most disc 24 is fixed with a wing nut 126. The discs 23 and 2.4 constitute the support means for the tire and to allow the latter to be placed on these discs, four claws 26 spaced circumferentially are provided on each disc.
As can be seen in fig. 10 and 11, three of the claws 26 are mounted freely on an axis 27 so as to be able to move angularly thereon while the fourth claw 26 'is fixed by means of an elastic washer 28 to its axis 27', the axis being provided at its end with an operating handle 2.9. Usually, stop pins (not shown) are provided to limit the movements of the handle 29 so that the claws can be easily moved by the operator in their extended or retracted positions in the profile of the disc.
Each of the four claws 26, 26 'is manufactured with a hub 30 having a peripheral groove 31 intended to receive an endless drive cable 32. By winding the cable 32 twice around the hub 31 of the axis 27 'carrying the fixed claw 26', a rotation of this shaft 27 'by the handle 2.9 produces a corresponding movement of the other claws 26 around their respective axes 27 of so that the claws can be tilted from an inner position of their respective discs 23 and 24, to an active or extended position as shown in FIG. 7.
Consequently, during operation, when it is desired to mount a tire on the support means comprising the two discs 23, 24, the claws 26, 26 'are turned inwards, allowing sufficient play for the beads. go over both discs. Once the tire is in place, the claws are returned to the position of fig. 7. When the grinding head is composed of two discs carrying the rotating claws, it is only possible to work with a bead diameter without changing discs 2.3 and 24.
On the other hand, the operation consisting in firstly fixing the bead support rings 12 and 13 to the tire and then mounting these rings on the discs or braces, has the advantage of allowing the use of bead beads. different diameters on the same spreading device if holes are drilled at different diameters in the discs or cross members.
By supplying pressurized fluid into the cylinder dre 21 'of the cylinder, the piston 22 carrying the disc 24 is moved axially, which allows the distance between the beads to be increased until the tread is in a condition. flattened before grinding.
The grinding machine comprising an electric motor E and a rasp of the pleating mechanism B is mounted on a horizontal bracket 33 mounted on a vertical hinge element 34, the other element of this hinge being indicated at 35 and is in turn connected by a pivot 36 with two arms 37 connected to a pivot 38 fixed by tabs 39 on the rear side of the upright 21.
As indicated in phantom in fig. 5, the console 33 carrying the motor of the grinding machine as well as the rasp can be tilted into an inoperative position where the pivot 36 occupies the indicated position.
Referring now to fig. 10, it will be noted that the inner disc 23 is fixed to a collar 2.3 'which is rotatably mounted by means of taper roller bearings on an inner sleeve 40, the latter being rotatably mounted on the outer end of the piston 22. To prevent any possibility of displacement of the jack during the grinding operation, there is provided a plunger 41 having a threaded end to be screwed into a tapped hole 42 at the inner end of the sleeve 40, this plunger 41, when it is in position, entering a forked portion 43 fixed to the end of the cylinder. It will be noted that the two discs 23 and 24 are mounted so as to rotate in bearings.
The control of the fluid circuit under hydraulic or other pressure of the actuating cylinder 21 'and of the piston is preferably carried out using a four-way and three-position rotary valve, for example, contraction-neutral-extension . In addition, a needle or needle valve for release or blockage of pressurized fluid is mounted so as to make hydraulic or pneumatic blocking of the tire spreader possible.
Means may be provided for adapting a dust extractor comprising a nozzle 45 (see fig. 7) connected by a flexible pipe 46 to a chamber 47 which can be depressed by means of a motor fan designated in a manner. general in 48 or by fins fixed to the periphery of the grinding disc.
Referring now to fi-. 3, the frame C for the tire die or mold consists of a rectangular frame 50 formed of angle irons mounted on casters 52 on one side and a central swivel castor 53. Vertical uprights 54 are attached adjacent to the four corners of the frame. 50 on which are slidably engaged bushings 55 forming part of an X-shaped auxiliary frame. The ends of the secondary frame 56 are provided with tubular bars 57 having at one end a fixed stop 58 and at the other end a stop pin or adjustable stop 59 to engage in one of the holes 59 '. The adjustable stopper 59 com takes an eccentric head 61 so that by rotating the lever 62, the head 61 moves to a position where the eccentric part locks the die.
By adjusting the hydraulic cylinder 60 on the main carriage, it is possible to raise and lower the auxiliary frame 56, the actuator being controlled by means of the drawbar 73 of the carriage.
In fig. 4 the die M is shown in position and during transport it is fixed by the adjustment of the stop heads 61 as described above. Note that the die or mold M is provided on the opposite sides with pairs of lugs 64 coming into contact with the ground so that when the tire has been transported support disks 23, 24 to the die, when the latter it is lowered towards the ground, remains erect on these legs 64.
During operation, the grinding head and motor are moved to the position in phantom in fig. 5 and at the same time the claws on the tire support discs are retracted, the claws of the front disc 24 being offset by an angle of 450 with respect to those of the rear disc. An inner tube having been inserted into the tire, the latter is mounted on the rear disc 23 and the beads are pushed against the fixed stops on the rear disc so as to ensure that the rearmost bead passes beyond the plane. claws 26 '. The handle 29 is then actuated to bring the two series of claws on the discs 23 and 24 into the spreading position where they are in engagement with the heels.
By ensuring that the needle 70 is in the open position, the rotary valve 71 is actuated to admit pressurized fluid into the cylinder 21 for the purpose of partially spreading the tire and flattening the tread. After having spread the tread, the valve is returned to the neutral position and the needle 70 is closed.
The plunger 41 is then screwed to engage the hole 42 of the sleeve 22 to mechanically prevent the tire from slackening.
The grinding operation can now be performed by tilting the console 33 carrying the motor E to the position in solid lines in FIG. 5. At the end of the polishing operation, the whole mechanism is tilted backwards away from the tire until the different parts take the position indicated in phantom in fig. 5.
Prior to transporting the tire T from the support disks 23 and 24 to the die or mold M, the new rubber tread is inserted into the die used for this purpose.
The rubber band can be placed in the mold using a roller to laminate it where it rests against the inner periphery of the mold. In a variant, the strip can be held in place by pins arranged around the perimeter of the mold unless the composition of the material of which the tread is made is relatively rigid. With the retreading strip in position, the carriage 50, 57 with the die M is rolled into a position where the central x-x axis of the die is aligned with the y-y axis of the support means as shown in FIG. 1. Before transporting the tire on the die M, it is necessary to fully lay it out.
This requires the removal of the plunger 41, the opening of the needle 70 and the movement of the rotary valve 71 to admit more fluid under pressure into the cylinder 21 '. When the walls of the tire have been fully expanded so as to reduce the diameter of the tread to allow the tire to enter the mold, the needle 70 is closed. To obtain the alignment of the die M and the tire, the hydraulic cylinder supporting the frame 56, 57 is used and as a guide we can provide reference lines on the side walls of the die, these lines being made to coincide with a light indicator on the trolley 15 ', 16'. The actual operation of transporting the tire from the support discs 23, 24 becomes a simple operation thanks to the reciprocal alignment of the elements described above.
When the tire is inside the mold, the rotary valve 71 is opened in the position of the tines to move the cylinder piston in a direction to tighten the discs 23 and 24. Care will be taken to ensure that the the tire is released gradually and the needle valve will be used for this purpose. When the grinding head has been fully retracted and the claws 2.6 'on the two discs 23 and 24 moved into their inoperative positions, it is then possible to separate the die M from the tire support means and from the grinding head by moving the carriage 50 away using the drawbar 73. When the carriage is moved away, the die M can be lowered to ground level by the hydraulic jack, the legs 64 then resting on the ground.
It is now possible to move the carriage to repeat the succession of the operations which have just been described.
