port à l'arbre, tandis que la section 207 est ;
Apparatus for manufacturing tire casings.
The invention relates to an apparatus for manufacturing tire casings by the so-called flat band method, and more particularly to the folding of plies.
In known apparatuses, casing drums included a collar or apron curved inwardly on their end edges, against which the heel was pressed, so that the heel was disposed at an acute angle to the drum axis. In making envelopes, the first two plies were first turned inward on this apron, the heel was then applied, and the first two plies were then returned upward to enclose the heel. In order to start this upward turning, it was necessary to employ an element capable of being introduced between the first ply and the apron. Then, a suitable form of the pickup roller was employed to complete the upward turning.
Said element left something to be desired for several reasons: among others, because it caused unwanted wrinkling of the pleats and damaged the fabric thereof due to friction.
The apparatus according to the invention is characterized in that the reel device comprises a crank arm having a hub by which the arm is mounted on a rotating shaft, a reel support rotatably mounted in said arm and a reel roller capable of rotating on a shaft articulated itself to said support, so as to be able to oscillate about an axis arranged transversely to that around which said support can rotate.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, one form and two variant embodiments of the object of the invention.

fig. 16 is a partial view of the rear of FIG. 15 from line 16-16 of fig. 15.
Seen as a whole, the apparatus comprises a cover 1 enclosing a motor for driving an expandable drum 2, a frame 3 supporting the reel, finishing and heel application mechanisms and a feed device 4, from which the various elements entering into the construction of the casing, such as the plies, the friction bands, and the treads of the tread, can be easily removed by the operator.
The drum 2 is integral with a cantilever shaft 6 driven by the motor (not shown) enclosed in the cover 1. A heel application ring 7 can rotate freely on a collar 8, which is keyed on the shaft 6 in a groove 9, in order to be able to be displaced axially with respect to this shaft, to be brought close to the drum 2 during the application of a heel.
The collar 8 is provided with a split ring 11 engaging in a groove formed in the periphery of the collar and the ring 11 is provided with an arm 12 extending downwards and connected to a piston rod 13 of an air cylinder (not shown) enclosed in the cover 1, so that the ring 7 can be moved towards the drum and moved away from the latter. A handle 14 is connected to a brake (not shown) cooperating with the shaft 6 and intended to control the expansion or contraction of the drum 2, as required by the method of constructing the tire casings.
All of the foregoing are known to those skilled in the art and therefore do not require further description.
The feed device 4 is mounted on a frame 23. This device comprises pairs of rollers 21, 22 mounted to rotate. A supply of ply material and a separation liner are wound onto each roll 21, and the whole is arranged so that the liner is wound onto a neighboring roll 22, automatically, as the ply material unwinds from the roll. roller 21.
An apron 24 supports the pleats as they are led from the roller to the drum, the apron being hinged to the device 4.
Any other common mechanism can be included in device 4 for providing friction bands and a provision of rolling surfaces to the drum.
The mechanism supporting the construction tools of the envelope is mounted on a base plate 31, together with the cover 1 and the motor it encloses. These tools include the outer heel applicator, a pair of flip-down pleat folding devices. located in front of the drum and a pair of flip down and up flip reels located at the rear of the drum.
Also mounted on the base plate are various foot switches, limit switches, air cylinders and a regulating device which will all be described in the following.
The heel application ring for the outer end of the drum, represented by 32, is carried on a vertical arm 33 mounted on a slider 34 capable of sliding into a slide provided by a horizontal plate 37 supported by a frame consisting of a foundation plate 36 and vertical plates 38, 39,40. This ring support comprising a vertical arm may have a slight misalignment when the heel is placed on the drum.
To overcome this drawback, a centering guide is provided, which consists of a tubular element 35 mounted in the center of the ring holder and which is capable of being received on an element 40 mounted on the central shaft of the drum 2. The ends of the elements 35 and 40 will preferably be bevelled to ensure their centering in the cases where their axes might not be in exact alignment.
An air cylinder 42, mounted on the plate 37, is provided with a piston rod 43 fixed to the arm 33 of the ring 32 and capable of moving this ring towards the rim of the drum and away from it. this. The air cylinder 42 and the air cylinder which actuates the ring 7 are preferably both supplied from a common source of pressurized fluid.
A pair of reel discs 44 for the tread; located below the drum 2, are rotatably mounted in a pair of blocks 46 carried by piston rods of air cylinders 47, so that the discs can be moved upwards in contact with a tread when the latter is in place on the drum.
Each of the air cylinders 47 is attached to a block 48, screwed onto a screw 49, journalled in the support plates 38,39,40, the screw being threaded in opposite directions on each side of the plate 39. The screw 49 is driven in rotation by a motor 41 and gears 45, 50, and, depending on whether it rotates in one direction or the other, it causes the reel discs 44 to move away or closer together.
To allow this movement of the reel discs, the blocks 48 are supported by rollers 51, which can be moved between rails 5, 53 carried by the plates 38, 39, 40.
A switch 54, carried by the rails 52, 53, is. actuated by a part of the block 48 on the right (fig. 1) so as to cause a reduction in the speed of movement of the reel discs during the part of the journey where the discs move away from the respective edges of the tread. A switch 55, mounted in a similar fashion, causes the stopping of the movement of the reel discs and initiates their lowering and their return to their starting point by means of controls not shown.
The pair of reel units located in front of the drum 2 comprises an assembly 56, moving in contact with the periphery of the drum by means of an air cylinder 57, supported in an inclined position by a bracket 58, fixed to the drum. central plate 39 and to the plate 36. The reels of each set 56 comprise an endless belt 59, formed by a spiral spring, rotating on a pair of pulleys and capable of contacting a fold on the periphery of the drum. at the edge thereof, and a second spring mounted in a similar manner 61 provided with a reinforcing roller under its bearing between the pulleys and capable of passing over the edge of the drum to return the plies downwards.
The apron, directed inwards, on the rim of the drum 2, which include the known machines, has been omitted, and the rim of the drum is perpendicular to the axis of the drum. Ceei is important in relation to the operation of the reel located at the rear of the drum.
One of the two reel assemblies located at the rear of the drum is shown in detail in figs. 2 to 4. The two rear reel assemblies are identical, except that they are arranged in opposition to work on the opposite edges of the drum; therefore, only one of these is described later. The reels are carried by a base 66 extending through the rear of the machine. Consoles 67 are fixed parallel to the axis of the drum by means of bolts 68.
A shaft 69 is supported in bores in the consoles 67, and consoles 71 are rotatably mounted on this shaft at each end of the machine, and a similar bracket 72 is mounted in the middle of the shaft. , the consoles being fixed together by means of a shelf 73 fixed to the lower sides of the consoles by means of bolts 74 (fig. 3).
A cast iron block 76 (Fig. 4), which serves as a support for the reel assembly, is also carried by shaft 69 and can slide along this shaft to accommodate various lengths of drum. The block 76 has a groove 77 engaged so as to be able to slide on a bar 78 of rectangular cross section, and which is fixed in recesses 79 made in the consoles 71, 72, by means of bolts 79 '. The block 76 is thus arranged to rotate at the same speed as the consoles 71, 72 and the shelf 73, and can be adjusted along the shaft 69 and the bar 78 by means of a bolt 80 journalled in the console. 71, screwed into block 76, and fitted with a locking nut 85 (fig. 34 on the inside of console 71.
The reel support block 76 is mounted on the shaft 69, so as to allow adjustment of the inclination of the reel relative to the particular drum employed; the purpose of this inclination will be indicated later.
To maintain the block 76 in the desired angular position on the shaft 69, a flange 81 is provided, which is fixed to the shelf 73 by means of bolts 82 and which has a part 83 bent at right angles downwards and a bore 84 in which is engaged an adjusting screw 86. The latter is provided with an eye 87 at one end, pivoting on a pin 88, carried by a pair of ears 89, fixed on the upper part of the base 66 .
The arm 83 of the flange is held in the desired position on the screw 86 by means of a pair of nuts 91 and thus the reel support block 76 is locked in the desired angular position.
Referring to fig. 4, it will be noted that the reel assembly is mounted in the block 76 by means of a shaft 92 rotating in needle bearings 93 carried in the block.
The shaft 92 is threaded, 94, at its upper end and, at 96, near its lower end, and it is retained against axial displacement with respect to the block 76 by means of an upper nut 97. screwing on part 94 and a lower nut 98 screwing on part 96. Between the lower nut 98 and the block is disposed a washer 99 and a ball bearing 101.
Between the upper nut 97 and the block are disposed a hub 102 of a crank arm 103, a spacer sleeve 104. a hub 106 of a helical wheel 107, a ball bearing 108 and a washer 109. The hub 102 is keyed on the shaft 92 at 111 and the hub 106 is keyed on this shaft at 112.
In view of the rotation of the shaft 92 of the reel assembly, the helical wheel 107 is driven by a worm 113, mounted on a shaft 114, which pivots in a pair of support blocks H 6 fixed on the face. upper block 76 by means of bolts 117. One end of the worm shaft 114 is extended beyond its support block, an extension on which a pulley 118 is threaded. A motor 119 drives the pulley 118 by through a belt 121.
The motor is fixed by means of bolts 122 to a support plate 123, which in turn is fixed to the rear face of the block 76 by means of bolts 124. The latter pass through openings 126 in the plate 123. which are of appropriate length to allow sliding adjustment of the plate to vary the tension of the motor belt.
The control is transmitted to the other rear reel assembly by means of a telescopic shaft device which allows the adjustment of the two reels axially relative to the drum. For this purpose, the inner end 127 of the worm shaft 114 is enlarged to fit within the end of a drive tube 128, to which it is secured by means. struts 125, for rotary movement, and also by means of a clamping screw 129 to prevent axial displacement of the tube 128.
A coupling shaft 131 is engaged in the tube 128 and the two are fixed. for the transmission of rotation, by means of a pin 132 disposed laterally in the shaft 131, extending on each side thereof and engaging in longitudinal longitudinal grooves 130, diametrically opposed, which presents tube 128, this coupling allowing relative axial displacement of the tube and of the shaft when the reel assemblies are adjusted axially with respect to the drum.
Shaft 131 has a reduced diameter portion 114 ', generally analogous to shaft 114, which is also mounted in bearing blocks (not shown) and carries a worm 113' for driving a helical wheel mounted on it. the other reel (not shown). The part 114 'of the shaft carries a gear 133 (Fig. 2) meshing with a gear 134 connected to a regulating apparatus 135 through a shaft 136. The regulating apparatus, which is of normal construction and n 'therefore not require a detailed description, regulates the various movements of the rear reels.
The shaft 92 is axially bored so as to form a passage 137 for conducting pressurized air to the top of the reel, for a purpose which will be indicated later. Air is introduced, from a suitable source, through a conduit 138 which is screwed into the side of a socket 139 surrounding a reduced diameter extension 141 forming the lower end of the shaft 92, a washer. 142 being mounted between the sleeve and the threads 96.
The socket 139 is provided with an inwardly directed flange 143 at its upper end, closely fitted to the extension 141, a lower socket 144 also being secured to the extension by a stud 145; this lower sleeve is provided with an annular flange 146 engaged in a shoulder presented by the outer lower edge of the sleeve 139. With this arrangement, the sleeve 139 determines an annular chamber 147 around the extension 141, which receives air from the sleeve. led 138.
The lower end of the bore 137 is plugged at 150, and a side bore 148 provides air communication between the bore 137 and the annular chamber 147 at all angular positions of the shaft 92. To prevent gas leakage. In the air of chamber 147, there is provided an upper packing ring 149 and a lower packing ring 151, both of which are retained against the ends of the chamber 139 by means of a coil spring 152.
The crank shaft 103 has a flat upper part 153, at the outer end of which is placed a vertical bush 154, the axis of which is parallel to that of the shaft 92 and constitutes a journal for the rotary mounting of the crankshaft. a reel support 156. A reinforcement rib 155 connects the sleeve 154 to the upper part 153.
Bushing 156 is secured by means of a stud 157 to the enlarged head 158 of a shaft 159 mounted in ball bearings 161,162 secured in bush 154. A pinion 163 is elongated at the. lower part of the shaft 159, at 164, and it is fixed by a nut 166 on the lower threaded end of the shaft, washers 167, 168 being mounted on the respective sides of the pinion. The pinion is actuated, to rotate the frame 156, by means of a rack 169, fixed to the piston of an air cylinder 171 (fig. 3), and guided in its sliding movement between the teeth of a fork 172 bolted at 173 to the lower side of crank arm 103.
The air cylinder is bolted at 174 to a side arm 176 of the flat top 153 of the crank arm, the support arm 176 being reinforced by a rib 160. Compressed air is supplied to the air cylinder 171 through a duct. 177 provided with a connector 178 screwed into the wall of the hub 102 and communicating with a lateral bore 179 formed in the shaft 92 and leading to the axial bore 137.
The air cylinder 171 is single-acting, and it is intended to move the rack 169 towards the rear of the plane of FIG. 6, against the action of a coil spring 181 surrounding the frame 156. The spring is anchored at one end to a screw 182 on the frame 156 and, at the other end, in a bore 183 formed in a collar 184 fixed by means of a set screw 186 on a shoulder 187 of the sleeve 154. Upon release of the pressure from the air cylinder, the frame 156 is pivoted into its normal position, by the spring action 181.
The roller reel (fig. 6), generally indicated by 188, rotates on a shaft 189 fixed in a bore 191 formed in a block 192, by means of a clamping screw 193.
Block 192 is provided with a spindle 194 mounted to rotate in a bore in the upper flat end 196 of a curved arm 197 of frame 156, and it is provided with a threaded reduced end to receive a nut. safety 198, the shaft 194 can rotate freely
ment in its holder. Block 192 presents
an oblong opening 199 and it is threaded
to receive a pair of adjusting screws 201, 202, capable of passing through the opening 199
and provided with clamping nuts 203, 204.
A
stud 206, extending laterally from
of the flat part 196, is extended into the on-
greenery 199 and thus limits the amplitude of oscil-
clockwise lation
and in the opposite direction of block 192 and cl-Li
reel 188, as determined by the d
slipping of screws 201, 202.
The limit values of
the inclination of the reel 188 are determined
in terms of the reel operation,
as will be explained below. In one of
these positions, the shaft 189 is in alignment
with a diameter of the drum 2 and, in
The other, it makes an angle of about 8 with this
diameter.
The 188 roller reel has two
sections, generally indicated by the
numbers 207 and 208, mounted in tandem on
the. rbre 189, each can run independently
hanging around this tree and the section
208 able to move axially by rap
habit to the tree, while section 207 is;
retained by a stop screw or other means
suitable against any axial movement by
relative to the shaft and limit nn sliding towards
outside section 208.
Each section 207 has a ring
209 provided with a bead 211 and a part
as a reduced inner skirt 212 which can be
engaged in the open end of the section
208. Ring 209 is attached to the track
exterior bearing of anti-friction bearings 213 at the
means of screws 214 and a clamping ring
internal 216, and the internal race
top of the bearings is fixed on one end
reduced diameter of the shaft 189 by means of
a washer 217 and a central screw 218
screwed into the shaft 189.
The larger section 208 of the reel
is also generally annular in shape and has a counterbore 219 of the
tined to receive the external tracks
bearings of anti-friction bearings 221., 222, of which
the inner tracks are mounted on the shaft 189 so as to be able to slide along the latter. The bearings are spaced apart by means of a sleeve 223 and all of these bearings are locked in position in the reel by the screw heads 224. which heads are housed in a recess made in the rear face of the reel.
Another counterbore 226, formed in the front end of the roller 208, is able to receive the skirt 212 of the roller 207 and has a curved opening 227 at its front edge to receive the bead 211.
This is the position that roller 208 normally affects under the pressure of a coil spring 228 surrounding shaft 189 and acting between block 192 and a spacer ring 229 located behind the inner raceway of bearing 222.
The large reel element 208 has a rough surface formed by the knurling 190, eeei in order to ensure better contact with the folds and to avoid any relative sliding, which could cause folds. Axial splines 195 contribute to the same result.
To make an envelope, the operator will first place a bead on carrier 7 and then a bead on carrier 32. The end of the first ply is then led from its feed roll to drum 2 and pressed down. way that it adheres to it.
The operator then depresses the foot switch 138, which causes the drum to rotate 360 and brings the fold into position on the drum. The edges of the folds are then brought together in contact to form a closed loop of folds, and the process is repeated for the second fold. These two plies are called the sub-heel pleats and their edges extend beyond the edges of the drum.
The air cylinder 57 is then actuated to bring the spring reels into contact with them. ends of the folds, and the latter are thus folded over the edges of the drum to take the position shown in FIG. 8, in which the first and second folds, respectively, are indicated by the numerals 231, 232. The spring reels are then withdrawn from the drum by means of the air cylinder 57. Then the rings 7 and 32 (fig. 1) are actuated by their respective air cylinders to bring the heels over the edge of the drum, on! e second fold 232, the heel being shown in FIG. 8 by number 233.
The turning up of the first two folds. that is to say, the covering of the heel, is accomplished by the rear reels, which have just been described, in a slippery manner. After application of the heel, the motor] is started by means of a suitable switch and, through the worm 113 and the helical wheel 107, the crank arm 103 is tilted from its position. normal at rest, as shown in fig.
8, where it is placed out of the periphery of the drum, in a clockwise direction, around the axis of the shaft 92, to a position where the reel 188 is located inside the drum, the rotation being interrupted by appropriate commands in the regulating device 136.
To prevent the reel assembly from being carried too far during this rearward tilting, a safety device is provided in a limit switch 234 carried by a guard element 236 (fig. 2) which protects the helical wheel 1. 07, the switch being actuated by an arm 237 disposed on the reel crank arm 103 to stop the motor 119 if, for any reason, the crank arm exceeds the regular limit of travel.
In this movement, the reel simply assumes the position for the up-turning operation, and its path of travel is such that it avoids the free edges of the folds. Therefore, at the end of this only inward movement, the reel is placed at a distance from its working point, as shown by the dotted lines in fig. 8, and it must be brought into contact with the plies in order to perform the upward turning. The necessary movement of the reel towards its working position is effected by the rotation of the frame 156 in the bush 154.
Thus, when the crank arm has reached its limit of inward travel, the regulator device causes pressurized air to be fed through the shaft 92 to the air cylinder 171 and the frame 156 rotates in its support. , against the action of the spring 181, towards a position, as shown in FIG. 9, where it forces the pleats against the bead of the tire.
Prior to this action, the drum was rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow in fig. 6 by means of the foot switch 238. After contacting the reel, the engine 119 is started by! e regulator device, to return the crank arm 103 to its normal position outside the drum. The axis of the shaft 92 is placed on a line substantially tangential to the drum and generally in the plane of the heel, so that the reel 188 continues to press on the heel, through the pleats, in order to bring them in firm contact with the heel and enclose the latter, as shown in fig. 10.
In the reel position shown in this figure, the pressure of the air cylinder 171 is relieved by means of the regulator, and the reel frame 156 rotates in the socket 54 under the pressure of the coil spring 181, to move the reel to the distance of the drum, towards its initial position, as shown in fig. 11.
In the folding operation which has just been described, it is the large reel element 208 which is used. In FIG. 6, it will be noted that the direction of rotation of the drum 2 and the direction of movement of the reel are such that they force the shaft 189 downwards, so that the stud 206 is actuated by the limiting screw 201, and that the The shaft 189 forms an angle with a radius of the drum, as indicated by the letter a. We have found that this angle should be of the order of 8. This forces the reel element 208 constantly against the element 207 and the latter does not take part in this phase of the folding, unless it comes in the extension of the element 208.
The drum stops rotating when the operator's foot is removed from the foot switch 238. The third and fourth plies 239, 241 are then withdrawn from their respective feed rolls and placed successively on the drum, and the wear strips 242 and the treads 243 are then removed from the storage bin and placed on the drum.
For the placement of the rolling surface on the drum, a centering device 244, pivoting on a bracket 246 on the apron 24 for tilting movement and provided with a guide wheel 247, will be employed.
Then, the air cylinders 47 are actuated to bring the reel discs 44 into contact with the tread at its center, and the screw 49 is rotated, so that the respective discs 44 move in opposite directions across. the tread while maintaining pressure on it. As the discs 44 pass the high points of the thick central tread of the tread surface, the pressure of the reel on the tread is likely to decrease if the axial displacement speed of the discs is maintained.
Therefore, the switch 54 is provided to effect a lowering of the rotational speed of the screw 49. When the discs 44 reach the outer margins of the tread, the switch 55 reverses the air cylinders 47, so that the discs move away from the drum, and the screw 49 turns in the opposite direction to return the reels in their free position centrally to the drum (fig. 1), where the rotation of the screw is stopped by means of a switch limiter (not shown).
At this time, the tread is trimmed, if necessary, and, for this purpose, any suitable form of trimmer can be used. However, in the present art, treads of precise dimensions are used, so that there is no need to trim.
The next phase is the downward revival of the third and. fourth pleats, referred to as heel pleats, which until now extended out of the ends of the drum. The downward turning is started with roller 62 on the spring reel assembly 56, which conveys the pleats midway through the heel to the position shown in FIG. 11, the drum falling in the direction shown in FIG. 7, having been rotated by a foot switch 248.
Thereafter. the air cylinder 171 is actuated to rotate the frame 156 in the socket 154, to bring the flange 211 of the end roller 207 of the reel into contact with the folds, and the motor 119 is actuated to move the flap around the heel, in contact pressure avee the outer fold, in a direction opposite to that of the first folding operation by this reel.
As seen in fig. 7. the direction of rotation of the drum and the direction of movement of the reel are such that they tilt the shaft 189 upwards until the gonjon 206 comes into contact with the stop screw 202, at which position axis shaft 189 is substantially in line with a radius of drum 2. The combined effect of the direction of rotation of the drum and the angular position.
area of the shaft 189 is such that during the travel of the reel inward through the heel, the reel element 208, by contact with the folds, retreats along the shaft 189 against the pressure of the spring 228, and the folding operation is carried out by the flange or bead 211 thus exposed of the end element 207 of the reel (Figs. 12 and 13). Ceei is not only a more efficient folding operation for this phase, but also allows the folding, inside the drum where the folds end, as shown in fig. 13.
Note that the inner edge of the drum flange is beveled at 249 to provide more play for the reel.
Adjusting the tilting of the rear reels around the shaft 69, by the nuts 91, to accommodate different sizes of drums, requires a new adjustment of the stop screws 201,202 to maintain the appropriate limit values of the angle of the drum. reel shaft 189 in relation to the radius of the drum. In order to avoid such an adjustment, the reel assembly can be mounted for movement. sliding towards and away from the drum, rather than a rocking motion. Such an arrangement is shown in FIGS. 15 and 16.
In this variant, the ends of the shelf 73 ', corresponding to the shelf 73, are extended beyond the end brackets 71, at 251 for example, and the ends of these extensions are engaged for movement. sliding in grooves 252 of inclined consoles 253, fixed by means of bolts 254,256 to a cast iron base plinth 66 'corresponding to the base 66 of the device of the embodiment.
The grooves 252 can advantageously be provided with an upper bar 257 fixed by means of bolts 258 to the bracket 253.
A central console 259, U-shaped, disposed on the base 66 'and inclined analogously to the consoles 253, houses a bar 261 fixed to the underside of the shelf 73' for sliding movement. The shelf 73 ′ and the folding mechanism carried by it are moved parallel to the grooves 252 and the U of the console 259 by means of a screw 262 mounted to rotate in a console 263 bolted to the end of the console. 259,] a screw being screwed into the central console 72 of the shelf 73 'and secured against axial displacement relative to the console 263 by means of clamps 264 and 266.
It will be noted that the rotation of the adjustment screw 262 causes a displacement of the shelf 73 ′ parallel to the grooves 252 of the consoles 253. The grooves 252 are parallel to the axis of the shaft 189 when the latter is in line with a radius. of drum 2. Therefore, by adjusting the reel assembly to accommodate a different size drum, the angular ratio of shaft 189 to the radius of the drum remains unchanged and no adjustment of the limit screws 201,202 is made. necessary.
In the variant which has just been described, no change in the parts of the reel assembly above the shelf 73 is necessary. The shaft 69 and the bar 77 still form a pair of space supports which hold the reel assemblies against rotation relative to the shelf 73 '.
Fig. 14 shows a variant of the reel to be used on the support of FIGS. 2 and 3.
In this form, the profile is somewhat modified, the outer end having a smaller diameter and the rear end having a diameter greater than that of the reel already described. Tests have shown that no single form of reel gives optimum results for all types and sizes of tires at the same time. In particular, it has been found that the flared shape shown in FIG. 14 works better on large tires than a reel similar in shape to the 188 reel.
