Metal extrusion press. The present invention a. for purpose. a metal extrusion press used, for example, to extrude tubes and make hollow shapes.
In an ordinary extrusion press, an ingot is placed in a housing by an extrusion punch. A mandrel is disposed in the punch, said mandrel being used to pierce the ingot and being. also used jointly. in the extrusion process, the man drin and the extrusion punch being suitably actuated by hydraulic cylinders. When such a press operates to extrude materials such as steel, the mandrel becomes very hot and must be cooled, otherwise the life of the mandrel is extremely short and the operation of the press is uneconomical. One of the difficulties encountered is that the time required to cool the mandrel is considerably reduced. the throughput of the press if a single mandrel is used for consecutive operations.
Many means can be used to cool the chucks, such as cooling with air, oil, water, etc. Air cooling has particular advantages. by its simplicity, but requires a longer time than other cooling means. The oil presents some handling difficulties and the time required for cooling is. still relatively long. It is not possible to use water on heavy duty steel mandrels. at high temperatures, because the mandrel splits as a result of the sudden temperature change when the water hits it.
Many tests have. been made to obviate the above difficulties, but a satisfactory solution has not been found. It has been proposed to remove the mandrel from the extruder and insert a new one into the extrusion punch, but ordinarily the mandrel is screwed into the holder of the sleeve. The change of the mandrel by disengaging it from its support cannot be done as a result of the high temperatures and the pressure to which the threaded connection is subjected during extrusion. Other types of joints allowing easy release are not satisfactory because the space existing in the core of the extrusion punch is limited and it is not possible to provide a joint of resistance. sufficient.
Mandrels attached to a solid shank have been used for extruding a light metal from an ingot, and a bayonet joint is provided between the mandrel and the mandrel holder for manual change of the mandrel. This connection has the drawback, however, that the mandrel is not movable relative to the extrusion punch itself and thus cannot be removed quickly during extrusion. In this case, the metal which is stamped or formed may contract on the mandrel and thus it becomes difficult to remove the mandrel from the metal.
It is obvious. that in the high temperature extrusion, especially of steel, it is of extreme importance to solve the so called mandrel cooling problem with the smallest possible loss of press operating time.
The press at. extruding metals according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a mandrel device cooperating with a die and an extrusion punch for shaping the metal at relatively high temperatures, said mandrel device being capable of be withdrawn in a position away from the operating area of the press and in which it is freely accessible (the outside to allow its replacement.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, three embodiments of the press according to the invention.

The first embodiment relates to a press. An extruder comprising two main extrusion punch control cylinders housed on either side of the press centerline. The upper main cylinder 20 and the lower main cylinder 21 are mounted on two uprights 22 and 23, said uprights being supported at 24 and 25 by the main base 26 of the press. Each cylinder may include legs (not shown) extending laterally to support the main tie-rods 27, said tie-rods passing through side tabs of the uprights 22 and 23.
The main cylinders are clamped between nuts 28 and 29 (fig. 2) screwed onto the tie rods, themselves fixed to a supporting plate 30. an extrusion die device generally designated by 31.
The main cylinders have pistons 32 connected to. a main mo bile butt 33, the latter carrying a tool holder 34 and a punch 3 ?. This punch 35 cooperates in the usual way with a bore 36 containing the ingot.
Two withdrawal rods 37 are connected to the movable main butt 33 for the purpose of removing said movable butt, these retraction rods 37 being controlled by the withdrawal device 38 comprising. a cylinder disposed in a fixed butt 39. There are preferably two key withdrawal rods, one on each side of the center line of the machine. Extensions 40 (the main tie rods 27 pass through the fixed stock 39. The key rods re trait 37 comprise adjustable nuts 41 which cooperate with a movable stock 42 of a perforating apparatus which will be described in detail later.
In ordinary extruding presses, the perforating apparatus comprises a mandrel which can be forced into an ingot housed in the bore 36. The mandrel device of a press according to the invention comprises a mandrel 43 (Fig. 1). , 2 and 3) and a mandrel holder 44. The mandrel and the holder. wind may have a reciprocating movement in the core of the punch 35.
The mandrel can be, for example, fixed in the mandrel holder 44 by means of a screw thread (fig. 3). [The support. of mandrel 44 has an enlarged end 45 which fits easily in a corresponding recess 47 (fig. 2) of a title (the perforation 48, with dewlap that the rear face of the support, of the mandrel abuts on a shoulder 49 (the the piercing rod 48.
The piercing rod can be moved during the. perforation of an ingot by a pair of perforation cylinders 49--1 carried by the fixed grip 39. The pistons 50 of the perforation cylinders are connected to the movable grip 42 key perforation, the latter in turn being connected to the perforation rod 48 by means of a clutch 51. A perforation cylinder and a piston are visible in FIG. 1, the other cylinder and the other piston being visible in fig. 2.
The clutch 51 may include two small cylinders 52, 52 (Fig. 5) arranged to tighten and loosen clutch elements 53 on the perforation rod 48. When the clutch 51 is engaged and the perforation cylinders 491 are in motion, the mandrel is moved powerfully forward, The action of the perforation cylinders 49 <1 being transmitted to the mandrel device by means of the pistons 50, the mobile perforation stick 42, the clutch 51 and, the enlarged head 45 of the mandrel holder 44.
The piercing rod 48 can. comprise, if desired, a shoulder 54 which cooperates with a disc 55 and which can be used to transmit the force of the perforation cylinders 40-1 to the punch 35 through the intermediary of the movable stick 33, as will be said further. The disc 55 may have a flat lower surface 56 (Fig. 2) which can slide on a horizontal bracket 57 serving as a support for the piercing rod 48 when the latter is in a withdrawn position and its end is not open. not supported in the components carried by the mo bile stick 33.
A withdrawal device may be provided which allows the mandrel to be moved by releasing the pressure in the perforation cylinders from an advanced position relative to the punch to. the position shown in fi-. 1 when the mandrel is to be removed immediately after extrusion. This withdrawal device comprises a pair of hydraulic cylinders 59 (fi- '4) controlling a sliding part 60 (fig. 1, 2 and 4), said sliding part 60 being guided in the movable butt 33 and the cylinders being suitably supplied with a fluid, so as to push the slurry piece 60 towards the rear, that is to say towards the right (FIG. 4).
It is obvious that springs or other suitable means can be used instead of the hydraulic device shown in FIG. 4. The force exerted by the withdrawal cylinders 59 is transmitted to the man drin support 44 via the sliding part 60 which, by its front part, rests against the shoulder 61 of the enlarged part 45 of the. chuck support (fig. 2). It can be seen that after the perforation operation called ingot by the mandrel 43, and the release of the pressure in the perforation cylinders 491, the mandrel 43 is moved to the position shown in. fig. 1 per report. with punch 35.
In this way, it is possible to avoid the difficulties which have been mentioned above concerning the contraction of the metal extruded on the mandrel. Cylinder retrieval devices 58 are provided, these devices being connected to the movable piercing stick 42 for the purpose of removing the latter.
To complete the withdrawal of the mandrel device, the piercing rod 48 is moved to the position shown in FIG. 2 by means of double-acting displacement cylinders 62 which are rigidly mounted in the movable perforation stick 42. The pistons 63 of the displacement cylinders are connected to a stick 64 of the displacement cylinders, said stick being fixed to an extension. 65 of the perforation rod 48. It can be seen that after disengaging the clutch 51, the perforation rod 48 can be moved back relative to the movable perforation stick 42.
By releasing the clutch 51, the action of the displacement cylinders 62 causes the displacement of the perforation rod 48, the mandrel holder 44 and the mandrel 43 in the position shown in FIG. 2. It is thus possible to effect a relatively long moving movement of the piercing rod 48 independent of the pistons in the piercing cylinders 49A to a point where the mandrel can be changed. In this way, the stroke of the pistons of the perforation cylinders can be short, as in ordinary tube presses.
The displacement cylinders 62 obviously do not need to be as big as the perforation cylinders 49A since they only serve to move the perforation rod 48.
When the piercing rod 48 is moved back to the position shown in fig. 2, the mandrel device is driven with it because the enlarged part 45 is pushed into contact. intimate with the piercing rod, thanks to the engagement between the ment shoulder 61 and the sliding part 60 and to the forces created during the piercing operation.
A puller 66 connected to a stopper 67 is provided to tear or separate the mandrel holder 44 from the puncture rod at the appropriate time and thereby drive the mandrel device out of the perforation rod. Numerous means other than the puller shown can be used to separate the mandrel holder and the puncture rod.
When the puncture rod 48 is moved back, a mandrel support 68 (Figs. 6 and 7) is in the desired position to receive and support the mandrel support 44 when it is. separate from the rod (the perforation. In the illustrated embodiment, the mandrel support 68 comprises a pair of pivoting arms 69 having supports 70 at their outer ends intended to engage the mandrel. chuck holder 44.
The mandrel support is shown in its inactive position in figs. 6 and 7, a connecting rod 71 comprising a roller 72 which can cooperate with a part 73 for controlling the mandrel support. LTn pebble 74 is. carried by a disc 55 (Fig. 7) which can cooperate with a surface 75 of the control part 73.
By the backward movement of the rod (the perforation 48 from the position shown in Fig. 7 to that shown in Fig. 10, the roller 74 cooperates with the surface 75 and rotates the control part 73 so that 'it pulls the connecting rod 71 to the right when desired, which moves the mandrel support arms 69 to the position shown in wires 8 and 10, so that they receive the mandrel support when it is driven from the perforation rod The transfer arm 76 (fig. 6) comprises a device with a hydraulic cylinder 78 actuating a part 79 in the form of a trough.
When the hydraulic cylinder 78 is actuated, the part 79 is advanced from the position shown in FIG. 6 in that shown in FIG. 8 it grasps the mandrel device.
The transfer device is. thus ready for the operation of a double-acting cylinder 80. The actuation of the cylinder 80, intended to pivot the transfer arm 76 around 77 from the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 8 to the position shown in dotted lines, thus brings the mandrel support to a point where it can be placed in a recess 82 of a series of recesses made in rotating discs 83 (fing. 8 and 9). The discs 83 are mounted on a shaft 81 which can rotate intermittently or assume determined positions in any usual manner.
Guide plates 85 serve to hold the mandrel supports -1-1 in the recesses 83 when the disc 83 rotates. After the mandrel has been transferred to a position where it can be easily engaged with the recesses of the discs 83, the hydraulic cylinder 78 can be actuated so that the trough 79 moves down and down. deposits the mandrel holder in a recess of a series of empty recesses. The discs 83 are then moved to bring the cold mandrel device into the desired position so that it is gripped by the vane 79 by the action of the hydraulic cylinder 78.
After engaging the mandrel device in the manner described, actuation of the cylinder 80 brings the mandrel device to the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 8 where it is engaged by the trough 79 and the supports 70, in front of the perforation rod 18 and in the path thereof.
By movement. in front of the piercing rod which is then done, the mandrel holder is engaged by the perforating rod and carried forward, the widened end 45 of the holder entering the recess 47 of the perforating rod. The trough 79 is withdrawn at the appropriate time so as not to interfere with the movement of the perforation rod. The small mandrel supports are removed by means of the roller. 74 which cooperates with the control part 73 and moves the mandrel supports 69 out of the path of the perforating rod and of the related devices.
The movement of the mandrel supports out of the path of the perforating rod 18 is delayed until the enlarged portion 15 of the mandrel support has been engaged in the recess of the perforating rod 1a. relative position of the roller. 74 and the control part 73 being such due the mandrel holder is held until said. commitment is made.
A suitable cooler 86 (Fig. 9) can be used to spray oil or other coolant onto the mandrels 43. A receptacle 87 and screens 88 and 89 of any suitable type can be used to collect the coolant. oil or refrigerant. In this device for cooling the mandrels, any number of positions may be provided, the example shown having six positions.
To return to the transfer mechanism operation, when the mandrel and the mandrel support are in the position shown in. fig. 2, supported on the mandrel supports 69 (fig. 8) after removal of the perforating rod 18, the hydraulic cylinder device 78 (fie. 6 and 8) is actuated to engage the mandrel and transfer a hot mandrel to the device. for cooling the mandrels to the right of fig. 8.
A cold mandrel and mandrel holder are transferred from the mandrel cooler to a position in front of the piercing rod. The latter is then advanced by means of the displacement cylinders 62 (fib. 1), the mandrel support being engaged by the perforation rod when the. rod moves forward. As the forward movement of the perforating rod continues, the support device 69 of the handle is withdrawn in the position shown in FIG. 7.
The piercing rod continues to advance up. until it reaches the position shown in FIG. 1, the shoulder 61 of the mandrel support at this time coming into contact with the front end of the sliding part 60. The clutch 51 is then engaged to connect the. mobile perforation stick 4 \? and the perforation cylinders 491 with the perforation rod 48. The movable stick 33, and with it the punch 35, is then actuated so as to. moving the parts to the active position (fia. 1), all moving parts of the perforating apparatus, including the movable perforating handle 42, being driven by the withdrawal rods 37 and the nuts 41.
Ingot 90 (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1) is pushed into bore 36 of ingot housing.
The mandrel 43 can then be advanced by means of the perforation cylinders 49A exerting a force via the clutch 51 and the perforation rod 48. The forward movement of the locking device takes place against the thrust. resistance of the cylinders 59 (fig. 4) which are under pressure and the mandrel support then being engaged in the perforation rod in this phase of operation. It is evident that the connection between the mandrel holder and the piercing rod is done simply by pressing in both directions, so that the mandrel device can be easily engaged with or disengaged from the piercing rod 48. .
The extrusion can then be done in the usual way, well known in the. convenient. The force of the perforation cylinders 49A can be transmitted to the perforation rod 48 alone, or it can be used in conjunction with the force of the main cylinders 20, 21 by engaging the disc 55 with a guide piece 91 (fig. 1) which serves to guide the sliding part 60 when the latter is in its external position.
When the extrusion operation is completed, the perforation cylinders 49A can be brought into communication with the exhaust, which lowers the pressure in these cylinders. The rolls 59 can then withdraw, which produces a rearward movement of the slider 60, which drives the mandrel out of the tube or extruded ingot, and. which moves at the same time all the mobile perforation device to the right (fig. 1 and 2) at the end of the stroke of the pistons of the cylinders 59. The different parts resume. thus the position shown in FIG. 1.
The clutch 51 is then disengaged so that the perforating rod 48, together with the mandrel and the mandrel holder, can be moved to the right (fig. 1 and 2) by the displacement cylinders 62. In the last movement ment of these organs, the front end of the perforation rod is. withdrawn from the sliding part 60, the front end of said rod being supported by the console 57 by the intermediary of the surface 56 of the disc 55. When the perforating rod approaches its rearmost position, the man drin supports controlled by the part 73 are actuated to bring these mandrel supports 69 into the desired position to support the positive mandrel.
At the end of the travel stroke, the mandrel holder 44 abuts against the puller 66, in order to separate the mandrel holder (the perforation rod 48.
The mandrel can then be removed as described above and device to. cold man drin or a new man drin device automatically put in place, repeating the operation. While the change is taking place, the extruded tube can be cut, the die and the ingot housing bore lubricated, and other necessary operations can be done without wasting time.
During. change. mandrel, one can inspect their condition and, if necessary, replace a defective mandrel without affecting press production, if care is taken to have assembled mandrel devices available.
The rotary device for holding and cooling the mandrels can have various shapes. Figs. 11 and 12 give another embodiment in which discs 100, 100 are mounted. rotation on a shaft 101, said discs having rods 102 which extend between them and which carry hooks 103 at points spaced along their length. The hooks 103 play the same role as the recesses 82 of the fi. 8 to receive and hold the chucks. A cooling device. 104 is. similar to device 86 of FIG. 9.
Obviously, many other transfer mechanisms can be used, such as the one shown in Figures 15 and 16.
Figs. 13 and 14 show an embodiment of the press in which a single central control cylinder 105 of the extrusion punch is used. The perforation rod 106 passes through a core 107 of the piston 108 of the control cylinder. The piston 108 is connected to the movable handle and to the tool holder 109 by means of a connecting piece 121 comprising openings 111 on each side. The punch 110 is housed at the end of the tool holder 109. The role of the openings 111 is to allow removal. from device to. mandrel.
There is provided a sliding part 114, similar to the sliding part 60 described above, and the mandrel and the handle support are held in this sliding part in the manner shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
A movable perforation stick 115 carries the displacement cylinders. 116, these cylinders being connected via rods 117 and a butt 118 to the perforation rod in order to complete the withdrawal. of the puncture rod as a result of the operation of the puncture removal cylinders 121A. A clutch 119 connects the perforation rod to perforation cylinders 120 via the movable perforation handle 115.
The mandrel and the mandrel holder can be removed by means of any suitable apparatus, in a manner similar to that deserved in the preceding embodiments, their access being. facilitated by the openings 111.
Figs. 15 and 16 show another embodiment of the press in which the main rollers 1.30 for controlling the extrusion rod are arranged horizontally on each side of a perforation rod 131. The cylinders 130 are suitably connected to actuate the movable butt and the tool holder indicated generally by 132. The chuck device includes a chuck 133 and a chuck holder 134 which can be inserted into the chuck. end of the perforation rod 131. When the perforation rod 131 is withdrawn by means of the displacement cylinders 135, the mandrel and the mandrel holder are placed on supporting arms 136 of the mandrel of the transfer mechanism. Said arms 136 are.
shown in fig. 15 in their inactive position, but they can be moved into an active position at the appropriate time by a control part 137. For this purpose, not shown connecting means can. be provided between the control part 137 and the arms 136.
A movable perforation stick 138, a fixed cylinder grip 139, perforation cylinders 140 and a clutch device 141 allow the device to be controlled in a manner similar to that described for the other embodiments.
When the mandrel holder 134 rests on the mandrel supports 136, a transfer arm 140A (Fig. 16), which pivots at 7.47, is. intended to be actuated by a hydraulic cylinder 142 by means of a flexible chain 143 or any other suitable device. When the hydraulic cylinder 142 is actuated, the transfer arm 140 rotates and assumes the position 144 shown in dotted lines (fig. 16), bringing the mandrel device upwards where it can be taken by a pair of hooks 145.
The hooks 145 are mounted on rods 146 disposed between rotating disks 147, these disks rotating intermittently under the action of the shaft 148. In this embodiment, the apparatus for making rotating and cooling chucks is disposed vertically above the path of the chuck device and can be accessed through platform 149.
