Chair The object of the present invention is a chair, characterized in that its seat and its backrest are mounted on a leg by means of a column capable of sliding in a socket and that an automatic locking device is provided. designed to allow the height adjustment of the assembly formed by the seat and the backrest.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the chair according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, and FIG. 2 is a vertical section, on an agran die scale, of the locking device.
The chair shown comprises a foot 1 formed by a central pot 2 and three legs 3 welded to this pot.
A shaft 4 is mounted in the pot 2 so as to be able to rotate, but without being able to move in the axial direction.
The seat 5 and the backrest 5a are mounted at the upper end of a sleeve 6 in which the column 4 can slide; a locking device is provided to allow the height adjustment of the assembly formed by the seat and the backrest in any position.
This device comprises a lever 7, one of the ends of which is formed by a collar 8, the opening 8a of which has a slightly larger diameter than that of the column 4 which passes through it. The lever part 9 which adjoins this collar has a rectangular section and is carried with play by a support constituted by a part 10 welded to the lower end of the sleeve 6 and by a bracket 11 fixed to this part. 10 by means of a bolt 12 and a nut 13.
A tubular part 14 of the lever is welded to part 9 with which it forms an angle of approximately 90; this part 14 extends towards the seat 5 in. a direction approximately parallel to the common axis of column 4 and sleeve 5, then in a direction approximately parallel to the seat adjacent thereto; the free end of this part 14 is provided with an operating button 15.
Near the support 10, 11, a coil spring 16 is inserted with a certain prior compression between the sleeve 6 and the part 14 of the lever 7, this spring being housed in part in a tubular part 17 welded to the sleeve 6 , and surrounding a stud 18 welded to the lever part 14.
Under the action of the spring 16, the lever 7 is hand held in the position shown in which the part in the form of a collar 8 locks on the column 4 by friction, this friction increasing in proportion to the force exerted from top to bottom. on the lever part 9 by the part 10 of the support, for example when a person sits on the seat 5. There is therefore a blockage. When you want to increase the height of the seat, all you have to do is lift the movable assembly formed by the seat 5, the backrest 5a and the socket 6, while placing one foot on the foot of the chair to prevent it - here is raised at the same time.
It can be seen that the locking device allows the height adjustment of this assembly 5, 5a, 6 in any position. When you want to decrease the height, you put the locking device out of action by pushing button 15 against seat 5, which has the effect of pivoting lever 7 on support 10, 11 and disengaging the collar. 8 of column 4. It is easy to understand that the blocking device would work quite the same if the seat 5 and the backrest 5a were mounted on the column while the socket 6 would be part of the chair leg. .
The button 15 would then be all -simple ment to be replaced by a pedal. The described blocking device is simple, robust and inexpensive to construct. However, it could be replaced by another locking device allowing the height adjustment of the assembly 5, 5a in any position.
Such another device could, for example, include a split clamp which would be pushed into a conical housing by a spring and which could be released from this housing and from the shaft by a pusher or other suitable member.
