Cryptographic device The object of the invention is a cryptographic device designed to produce combined substitutions of elementary cycles, characterized in that it comprises, for the control of these elementary cycles, a punched key card, and key elements. fears that enter perforations of the key card or come up against non-perforated parts of the latter,
said feeler elements being in a drive connection with means arranged to allow encryption and decryption.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment in top view; fig. 2 is a side view of the same embodiment; fig. 3 is a top view of this embodiment with the cover removed; fig. 4 is a section taken along line IV-IV of FIG. 3; fig. 5 is a section similar to that of FIG. 4 and shows another position of certain movable organs ; in fig. 6 is a section along VI-VI of FIG. 3;
fig. 7 is a section along VII-VII of FIG. 3; figs. 8a and 8b are detail views of the mechanism for focusing the external key; fig. 9 is a view of a key card; figs. 10 and 11 are schematic views showing a variant of a detail;
fig. 12 is a section similar to that of FIG. 6, of a second embodiment of the device ; FIG. 13 is a partial plan view of this second embodiment, and FIG. 14 is a view of a key card of this second embodiment. The device shown in FIGS. 1 to 7 and 8a, 8b comprises a frame having two side walls 1, 2 and a base 3. This frame is enclosed in a housing 47.
A shaft 4 journaled at its ends on the side walls 1, 2 of the frame carries five identical wheels 5, fixed in the axial direction, due to the fact that each of them takes in a slot 6 of a plate 7 fixed by its ends to the side walls 1, 2. One of the faces of each of these wheels 5 (fig. 8a and 8b) has holes 10 into which penetrates, under the action of a spring 58 placed between the wall 2 and the disc 8 adjacent, a driver 9, fixed on a corresponding disc 8, wedged on the shaft 4. A button 57 fixed on the shaft 4 near the wall 1 allows the shaft 4 to be moved in the axial direction with the discs 8 for release their trainer 9 from the corresponding wheels 5.
Each of the wheels is used to transport one of the five endless belts 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 pierced with holes 17 in which. enter teeth 18 arranged on the circumference of these wheels. The bands 11-15 are provided with feeler pads 19 and alphabetical series of letters 16 for identifying the positions of the feeler pads 19. The bands 11-15 are also carried by wheels 20 mounted on pivots on supports. 22 fixed on a plate 23 mounted between the two walls 1 and 2. They can move freely through the slides 24 which the plates 25 present.
These are guided by slots 26 made in the base 3 and by angled levers 27 mounted idle on a shaft 28 and connected to the plates 25 by means of pivots 29. Springs 30, attached to the arms 27 and to the pins 31 fixed on the base 3 tend to drive the arms 27 in a clockwise direction of rotation, in order to lift the plates 25. Above all of these plates 25, a cassette 32 extends between the plates. two walls 1 and 2, to which it is attached. This cassette 32 has holes 33 into which the feeler pads 19 can enter.
A key card 34 can be pushed into the cassette. The distances between the feeler pads mounted on the strips 11-15 are chosen so that when a sensor pad 19 has left the last hole 33 in its row, the following sensor pad 19 is placed in front of the first hole of the same row.
A crank 49 is fixed on the shaft 28. Two arms 35 wedged on the shaft 28 support a bar 36. In addition, a lever 37, fixed on the shaft 28, is provided with a driver 38 which takes in a slot 39 presented by one of the arms of a lever 40, capable of pivoting around a pin 41 fixed to the wall 1. The other arm of this lever 40 (fig. 6) is provided with a pivot 44 carrying a pawl 42 which is held against a stop 43 by the action of a spring 45.
A pin 93 fixed to the wall 1 serves as a stop for the pawl 42 at the end of its movement, when it acts on a toothed wheel 56 fixed on one of the ends of the shaft 4. Each of the plates 25 is provided with 'a peg 54 engaged in a slot 55 that has one of the arms of a corresponding elbow lever 51. These levers are carried by a pin 50, the ends of which are fixed to the walls 1, 2. The other arm of these levers 51 bears a sign 53 which appears in a corresponding window 59 of the housing 47 when the plate 25 envisaged occupies its position. lower.
The housing 47 further has windows 48 for reading letters 16 and slots 60 through which the wheels 5 protrude.
The device is used in the following manner The placement of a key card 34 in the case 32 constitutes the development of an internal key of the device. The adjustment of an external key of the device is carried out by moving the bands 11-15 by means of the corresponding wheels 5, after having released these wheels 5 by pressing the button 57 and after having lowered the crank 49. This setting at the point of the outer key is intended to show in the windows 48, to the right of a reference line, an agreed combination of the letters 16, exactly as in conventional key-wheel machines.
After focusing the external key, release button 57 and crank 49; under the action of the spring 58, the shaft then returns to its original position and the drivers 9 enter the holes 10, fixing the wheels 5 to the shaft 4. Now the device is ready for use. When the crank 49 is lowered, the shaft 28 is turned counterclockwise and the levers 27 are turned in the same direction when the bar 36 acts on them. By this, the plates 25 are lowered and the feeler pads 19 fixed on the bands 11 15 are released from the holes 33.
Further, the pawl 42 has engaged with the toothed wheel 56. Each lowering of the crank 49 advances the toothed wheel 56 one step counterclockwise, the pawl 42 finally abutting against the counterclockwise. 'stop 93. Thus, all the five wheels are turned by one step and the bands 11-15 are transported each one step as well as the feeler pads 19 which are thus moved relative to the holes 33. When one release the crank 49, the spring 46 acts on the lever 37 in a clockwise direction, so that, under the action of the springs, the levers 27 raise the plates 25 towards the cassette 32 to bring in the studs - probes 19 in holes 33.
If the key card 34 has a hole at this location, in the row corresponding to the probe-contact 19 considered, this probe-contact 19 is not retained, as shown in FIG. 5. If there is no hole at this location in the key card, the probe stud 19 abuts against the key card and is thus maintained in a lower position than in the previous case. The differences of the positions can be read in the windows 59, where the signs 53 appear according to the positions of the levers 51 which follow the movements of the plates 25. In the lowest position of the plate 25, the sign 53 appears in the window 59. In the highest position of the plate 25, the window remains empty.
At each advance step, a combination of signs and voids appears in the windows 59, depending on the way in which the key cards are punched. These combinations represent letters such as they appear for example in the international Baudot alphabet.
Since thirty-two combinations are possible with five pulses and the international alphabet contains only twenty-six letters, excess combinations are used as forward pulses until a combination corresponding to a letter appears. of the international alphabet, in other words, one obtains an irregular advancement. This succession of letters is used to substitute cipher text for clear text, and vice versa. In order to obtain successions as long as possible without repetition, the numbers of the holes in the different rows of the key card 34 have no common denominator.
To have the same number of holes in each row of the cassette 33 and so as not to have to change the width of the key cards 34, the holes located at the end of each row are, if necessary, replaced by extended openings 95 .
To reduce the dimensions of the key cards, another hole punching system can be used, which is shown in figs. 10 and 11. In this case, a strip 62 is provided with six feeler studs 63-65 arranged in three rows corresponding to the holes 66 in a key card 67. When a feeler stud 63 has traversed the positions a of row I (fig. 10), it is followed by a tracer 65, which traverses the positions a of row III, then by a tracer 64, which traverses the a positions of row II. After that, the other tracer 64 runs through the positions b of row I, etc.
Instead of bands 11-15, it is possible to use as carriers of the feeler pads 19 (or bands 62 and feeler pads 63-65) of the drums 68 as shown in FIGS. 12 and 13. These drums 68 are fixed on a shaft 70 that a mechanism similar to that shown in FIG. 6 makes it possible to rotate step by step by action ning the crank 49. Next to each of them is placed a ratchet wheel 69 free to turn on the shaft 70 and provided with three pivots 74 which each carry a lever 71 , 72 and 73, respectively. These levers are capable of acting on feeler pads 76, 77 and 78, respectively, guided in holes made in the drum 68.
They are also each provided with a lug 96 which takes in a corresponding hole made in the drum 68; thus, a small clockwise rotation of the ratchet wheel 69 causes the feelers 76 to 78 to move outwardly against the resistance of the return springs 75.
The three feeler pads 76 to 78 of each drum 68 are offset with respect to one another in the axial direction.
An arched cassette 91, coaxial with the shaft 70, is fixed on the base 3 of the frame and has in front of each drum 68 three rows of holes through which the feeler pads 76 to 78 can pass when they are moved towards the end. 'outside. The holes in the key card 90 are opposite the holes in the case when this key card is fully inserted into the cassette.
For each drum, there is an indicating device comprising a slide 84, guided on the base 3 by means of studs 97. A pawl 85, capable of engaging with the corresponding ratchet wheel 69, is mounted on the slide by means of a pivot 87; it is loaded by a spring 88 which tends to hold it against an ear 86 of the slider. In a slot 83 of the latter is engaged a pin 82, planted in a lever 80 mounted idle on a pin 79, and loaded by a spring 81; the part 80a corresponds to the part 52 of the lever 51 and bears a sign such as 53.
In fig. 12 and 13, the positions of the parts correspond to those shown in FIG. 4; the crank is lowered. When the crank 49 is released, the bar 36 moves to the left (fig. 12 and 13); the slide 84 follows, under the action of the spring 81. The pawl 85 engages with the ratchet wheel 69 and drives the latter in order to move the feeler pads 76 to 78 outwards. If one of the probes, 76 for example, finds a hole in the key card 90, the movement of the probes 76 to 78, of the levers 71 to 73, of the ratchet wheel 69, of the slide 84 and lever 80 will have an amplitude such that the sign 53 will disappear from the window 59 of the housing.
In the other case, this movement will be interrupted about halfway, since the probe-stud will abut against the key card 90; the sign 53 will then be visible in the window.
For the rest, the mode of use and operation is similar to the variant shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, the feeler pads 76 to 78 of each drum 68 working one after the other.
