A mainspring time counter The present invention relates to a mainspring time counter for performing a function after an adjustable period of time. This time counter is characterized by an adjustment button provided with a toothing having a gap and intended to cooperate with a second toothing, the time period being adjusted by turning the adjustment button on itself, so as to bring said gap in a determined position with respect to said second toothing, one of the two toothings being movable with respect to the other so that when the movable toothing is moved in one direction with respect to the other, the toothing of the adjustment knob clicks into place on the other toothing and that,
when the movable toothing is displaced in the opposite direction with respect to the other, the adjustment knob is driven in rotation and arms the mainspring by an amount proportional to the chosen period of time.
The function which the counter is intended to perform after an adjustable period of time can be of a very diverse nature. It may for example be a matter of giving an acoustic or optical signal, of closing an electrical contact, of blocking or unblocking a closing device, etc.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the time counter which is the subject of the invention. In this example, the time counter is mounted inside a pivoting cover, intended to close a case containing cigarettes, and the counter is intended to act, once set and reassembled, on a closing device. the case in such a way that a cigarette can only be removed from the case after a fixed period of time.
Fig. 1 is a view in perspeci: ive of this embodiment, in the closed state. Fig. 2 is a partial perspective view thereof in the open state.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the time counter, on an enlarged scale, in section along line III-III of FIG. 4.
Figs. 4 to 6 are sections respectively along lines IV-IV, V-V and VI-VI of FIG. 3. Figs. 7 and 8 are sections, on an even larger scale, respectively, along lines VII-VII and VIII-VIII of FIG. 3.
Fig. 9 is a view of a detail.
The time counter is mounted in a cigarette case which comprises a box body 1 and a cover 2 freely pivoting on a rod 3. This rod 3 is fixed to two metal plates 4, 5 embedded in two opposite walls of the box body. 1. The plate 5 has at its upper part a toothed sector 6, the function of which will be described later. The box body 1 is intended to receive cigarettes, the cigarettes being freely arranged in the body 1 or being contained in their original packet, torn at its upper part.
The cover 2 has a closing button 7 which, in the closed position, cooperates with a locking part 8 carried by the box body 1, the worm part 8 having a narrow entry 9 followed by a circular hole 10 ( fig. 2 to 4). As for the closing button 7, it has an inner part 11 of diameter corresponding to the hole 10, and a part 12 of reduced diameter, capable of passing through the narrow entrance 9 of the locking part 8 when the closing button is pressed. 7 is pressed.
The time counter, described below, is mounted inside the cover 2. It has a mainspring and an adjustment device, and is arranged in such a way that once adjusted and reassembled, it acts on the button closure 7 so that the cover 2 can only be opened after a predetermined period of time, chosen by the user.
The counter frame comprises two plates 13 and 14, between which pivot all the moving parts of the counter train, these plates being connected by pillars 59. The upper plate 13 is covered with a sheet 15 of plastic material, which covers the entire surface. cover 2, while another plastic sheet 16 is arranged below the lower plate 14 and forms a dust cover, to prevent tobacco particles from entering the interior of the counter mechanism.
In a tab 13a bent at a right angle to the upper plate 13 is slidably mounted (fig. 3 and 5) a rod 17 which comes in one piece with a circular mesh ring 18. The latter has a random element 19 in which is engaged a guide rod 20 fixed to a folded part 13b of the plate 13. The rod 17, which has at its free end an attached collar 21, can slide in the tab 13a of the plate 13 and the rack 18 is at the same time guided by the rod 20. A coil spring 22, bearing on the one hand on a shoulder 60 of the rack -18 and on the other hand on the tab 13a, cons titue the mainspring of the counter.
The rack 18 is engaged with a toothed wheel 23 mounted loose on a shaft 24 pivoting in the two plates 13 and 14 (FIG. 7). On the shaft 24 is wedged a toothed wheel 25 constituting the first mo bile of the gear train of the counter. A freewheel coupling is provided between the wheels 23 and 25. For this purpose, a coil spring 26 slightly pre-armed surrounds the hub 27 of the wheel 25, and its upper end 28 is hooked into a hole of the wheel 23, while its lower end is free.
The winding direction of the spring 26 is such that when the wheel 23 turns counterclockwise in FIG. 3, the movement of the end 28 of the spring 26 tends to tighten the turns of this spring, and as a result solidifies the spring 26 with the hub 27 of the wheel 25. On the other hand, if the wheel 23 rotates in the opposite direction, the movement of the end 28 of the spring 26 tends to open the turns of the latter, and the wheel 25 is not driven, the spring 26 simply sliding on the hub 27 of the wheel 25.
The wheel 25 drives the gear train 29 to 36, the wheel 36 being the escape wheel which actuates a shaft 37 carrying a balance or vibrator 38. The shaft 37 is milled so as to have two teeth (fig. 3) ), so that it can oscillate like a striking hammer when the escape wheel 36 turns. As already said, all the mobiles 29 to 38 pivot in the two plates 13 and 14.
A locking lever 39 is wedged on a pivoting shaft 40 in the plates 13 and 14. It carries a countersunk pin 41 which encroaches on the path of the collar 21 of the rod 17, so that when the rod 17 moves towards the left of fig. 3, the collar 21 pushes back the pin 41 and rocks the rocker 39 in the counterclockwise direction, for the purpose explained below. The rocker 39 has a raised tab 42 carrying a stud 43. A small coil spring 44 bears against the tab 42 and against the inner face of the button 7, this spring being guided by the stud 43.
The spring 44 has a dual function: On the one hand, it pushes the button 7 outwards, and on the other hand, it tends to turn the lever 39 in the clockwise direction of FIG 3. The lever 39 presents in addition two legs 45 and 46 iné also folded. The first, 45, bent at a right angle, abuts against the inner front face of the button 7, and prevents the button 7 from being pressed when the rocker 39 occupies the position shown in FIG. 3 (locked position); the second, 46, bent at approximately 450 relative to the rocker 39, abuts against the side face of the button 7 and serves to limit the movement of the rocker 39 in the clockwise direction of FIG. 3, under the action of the spring 44.
We will now describe the device for adjusting and winding the counter. This comprises an adjustment knob 47 integral with an adjustment rod 48. The rod 48 pivots, on the one hand, in a tab 14a raised from the plate 14 and, on the other hand, in a circular opening 49 a tab 14b of the plate 14, the diameter of the opening 49 being greater than that of the rod 48 (FIG. 4). The end of the rod 48 which is close to the button 47 also passes through a rocker 50 pivoting at 51 on the tab 14b of the plate 14, so that said end can oscillate within the limits authorized by the structure 49.
The adjustment rod 48 is subjected, in the vicinity of the lever 50, to the action of a coil spring 52 hooked to the tab 13b of the plate 13 (FIG. 3), this res out tending to maintain the rod 48 in the position shown in fig. 4, ie to the left in opening 49. Near its end opposite button 47, adjusting rod 48 carries a winding pinion 53 which is engaged with rack 18 (Fig. 3, 5 and 6). A coil spring 54, bearing on the winding pinion 53 and on the rocker 50, surrounds the adjustment rod 48 and tends to keep the winding pinion 53 in engagement with the 1st rack 18.
The axial movement of the adjustment rod 48 is limited by the fact that the winding pinion 53 abuts, at the end of its travel, against one or the other of the edges of the opening 61 formed by the raising of the tab 14a. of the plate 14. On its inner face, the adjustment button 47 carries a set of teeth constituted by. six pins 55 arranged in the manner shown in FIG. 8, that is to say that they are placed at 45 ,, one of the other on the same circle, two places remaining unoccupied and forming a gap in said toothing. These pins 55 are intended to cooperate with the teeth of the toothed sector 6, as described below.
A tab <I> 5a of </I> the plate 5 is engaged in a groove 56 of the adjustment button 47, when the cover 2 is in the closed position (fig. 3), in order to prevent the button 47 from being pulled. forward in this position. The adjustment knob 47 bears a marker line 57 which can move opposite a graduated scale 58 carried by the sheet 15 (FIG. 9).
The counter described operates in the following manner Let us first assume that 1, motor spring 22 is disarmed and the cover 2 is closed. The adjustment knob 47 is partially embedded in the cover (fig. 3) and it is impossible to pull it forward, since it is retained by the tab 5a of the plate 5. The pins 55 take care of this, for example. moment the position shown in fig. 4, that is to say that the reference line 57 of the adjustment knob 47 is opposite the line 0 of the scale 58 (fig. 9).
To use the device, we start by pressing the closing button 7 and opening the cover 2. The locking lever 39 is in fact in a position such, at this time, that its tab 45 does no obstacle to the inward movement of the button 7. When opening the cover 2, the pins 55 pass in front of the teeth of the toothed sector 6, without touching them. Once the cover 2 is completely open, the adjustment knob 47 is pulled forward, against the action of the spring 54, and it is brought into the desired adjustment position, which is made possible by the fact that the winding pinion 53 comes out of engagement with the mesh 18.
In the position shown in fig. 8, the apparatus is set for a period of 20 minutes and the reference line 57 comes opposite the line 20 of the scale 58 (fig. 9). The button 47, once released, returns to its position under the action of the spring 54. The cover 2 is then closed, so that some of the pins 55 come into engagement with the teeth of the fixed sector 6. In the case of FIG. . 8, it can be seen that the pin 55a first engages with the first tooth of the sector 6 and turns the button 47 by 45 about its axis.
It is then the pin 55b which engages with the second tooth of the sector 6 and in its turn turns the button 47 by 450. The part of the button 47 without pins 55 is then presented in front of the other teeth of the toothed sector 6 and passes freely in front of them. The rotation of 900 of the button 47 is transmitted by the rod 48 to the winding pinion 53, which moves the rack 18 to the right of FIGS. 3 and 5, thus arming the mainspring 22 by compressing it.
It should be noted that the degree of winding of the spring 22 is proportional to the period of time for which the device has been adjusted. If, for example, we had placed the reference 57 of the adjustment button 47 on the number 60 of the scale 58, the six pins 55 of the button 47 would have come into engagement with the toothed sector 6 when closing the cover 2, and rod 48 would have rotated 2700, causing greater winding of spring 22. On the fia. 3, 4 and 5, the parts are precisely represented when the spring 22 is fully loaded.
When moving the rack 18 (fig. 3) to the right, the wheel 23 is driven in a clockwise direction, but this rotation is not transmitted to the underlying wheel 25, due to the coupling at freewheel shown in fig. 7, described above. The gear train of the counter is therefore not affected during reassembly. From now on, it is no longer possible to open the case 1, because the locking lever 39, under the action of its res out 44, has tilted clockwise in FIG. 3, so that its tab 45 prevents pushing in button 7.
The meter is therefore now set and re-assembled. Under the action of the mainspring 22, the mesh 18 tends to move to the left in FIG. 3, and consequently to drive the wheel 23 counterclockwise. This movement of the wheel 23 is transmitted to the wheel 25, because, this time, the direction of rotation of the wheel 23 is such that it tends to tighten the turns of the spring 26. The wheel 25 then drives the gear train 29 at 36 of the counter, and the escape wheel 36 causes the balance 38 to oscillate. While the counter is running, the rack 18 rotates the winding pinion 53 and consequently the rod 48 and the adjustment knob 47, so that the latter resumes its starting position, shown in dotted lines in the left part of FIG. 8.
At the end of the chosen period of time, the collar 21 of the rod 17 abuts against the pin 41 of the locking lever 39 and causes the latter to tilt counterclockwise in FIG. 3, which releases the closing button 7. From this moment, it is again possible to open the cover 2. To use the appliance again, we open the cover 2. The button 47 now occupies a other position than the neutral position described above.
When opening the cover 2, some of the pins 55 engage with the toothed sector 6, but they snap on the toothed sector 6, because the rod 48 of the button 47, mounted in the rocker 50, moves in the opening 49 to the passage of each tooth. The spring 52 returns the rod 48 each time to the position shown in FIG. 4. Therefore, during the opening of the cover 2, the adjustment button 47 is not rotated, so that the adjustment position of the button 48 remains unchanged. If therefore a given time interval has been chosen once and for all, for example 20 minutes, the device remains set to this interval.
If it is desired to modify said interval, it can be done when the cover 2 is in the open position.
While the meter is running, the user can check at any time how much time is left until the case can be opened again. The adjustment button, supposedly placed on division 50 of scale 58, turns during reassembly until the marker line 57 reaches division 0, and while the counter is running, button 47 turns in direction reverse to finally return to division 50. Consequently, if, while the meter is running, the user sees that the line 57 is on division 30, for example, he knows that he must still wait 20 minutes to be able to open the cover 2.
According to one variant, another type of indicator could be provided, for example giving an optical or acoustic signal at the end of the chosen period of time.
The graduated scale 58 has the particularity that the angular distance between lines 0 and 10 is double that between the following lines. This is due to the arrangement of the pins 55 on the adjustment button 47. With the arrangement chosen, if we placed the button 47 at an equal distance between the lines 0 and 10, we would have a second adjustment position for a period of time of 10 minutes. The number of pins 55 may be different from six, which makes it possible to adapt the device to very different time intervals.
In the embodiment described, the motor spring 22 is compressed during winding and expands during operation of the counter. Alternatively, one could consider the reverse solution, that is to say that the mainspring would be stretched or lengthened during winding and would be shortened during operation of the counter (tension spring).
Instead of carrying pins 55, the adjustment knob 47 could be integral with a pinion or a toothed wheel, the teeth of which would have a gap, that is to say a part without teeth.
In the embodiment described and shown, the teeth of the adjustment button 47 cooperates with the teeth of the toothed sector 6, which has a fixed position. A different solution could also be envisaged in which the teeth actuating the teeth of the adjustment knob would be carried by a movable member, for example by a pivoting lever having a toothed sector.
In this case, as in the example described, the rotation of said lever in one direction would cause the rod of the adjustment button to oscillate, and the teeth of the adjustment button would unclip on the teeth of the toothed sector, while when rotation of said lever in the other direction, the toothed sector of this lever would turn the adjustment knob and arm the motor spring by an amount proportional to the chosen period of time.
