Lighter with hand-operated wheel and pop-up cover. The so-called hatching automatic lighters always include a cover retaining member, a member acting in the manner of a trigger and controlled from the outside either by a simple button, or by a more complicated device seeking to make more unlikely accidental ignition of the lighter in the pocket. Apart from this danger of accidental ignition, these lighters still have the drawback, when they fail, of forcing the smoker to close his lighter before attempting to light it a second time.
To remedy these two drawbacks, semi-automatic lighters with a jumping-cover have been constructed in which, after the automatic opening of the cover, a second non-automatic movement is necessary to cause ignition, which movement can then be repeated. only if the ignition has failed. But these lighters still present in the event of accidental opening of the cover, the inconvenience of letting the benzine evaporate in the pocket where it then spreads a very unpleasant odor. Lighters have also been constructed in which the control of the opening of the cover and the control of the dial can be effected simultaneously by the same finger.
These lighters have the drawback of having a cover which is not securely held in the closed position, since no positive device retaining the cover in a determined position relative to the body of the lighter is provided. Thus the cover is in no way locked in its closed position, but simply retained in this position by the frictional resistance of its control to which may be added the frictional resistance of the grinding wheel on the. pyrophoric stone. The lighter can therefore be opened by a simple pull exerted on the cover.
The object of the present invention is a lighter wheel controlled by hand, com carrying a jumping cover automatically locking always in the same closed position when it is lowered, thanks to.
a retaining device which opposes two stops against each other, one of which is subjected to an elastic action which eliminates the drawbacks cited by the fact that it comprises a kinematic chain of which the first element is the organ actuated by hand to cause ignition and the last one of said stops, kinematic chain allowing said stops to be released from one of the other from the first part of the rotational movement imparted to the first element, and by the fact that in addition to that of the stops subjected to an elastic action causing the automatic worm rusting of the cover,
at least one element of the kinematic chain is subjected to an elastic action tending to keep it back in the same starting position.

<tb> 2,2 <SEP> cut out <SEP> from the <SEP> tube, <SEP> but <SEP> angularly smaller than the latter, so that the arm can rotate with the screw 15 in the tube 12 of an angle a corresponding to the angular play remaining between the parts 22 and 28. This play is sufficient to allow, when the cover is closed, the hook 14 of the arm 13 to pass over the hook 19 to take the position shown in FIG. . 2, without causing a movement of the pawl on the teeth 8.
Below the bore containing the tube 12, the body 5 comprises a recess 16 crossed by a vertical axis 17 and on which is mounted a small torsion spring with bend 18, one end of which rests on the arm 13, the other being housed in an opening of the pawl 9. To allow the latter to move relative to the arm 11 under the action of the spring 18, this arm has a slight recess facing the end of the spring.
Against the wick-holder tube 3 is mounted a fixed hook 19 intended to engage with the end 14 of the arm 13.
The whipping of the lighter is as follows: The cover 2 being closed as shown in figs. 1 and 2, the arm 13 engages by its end 14 with the hook 19, under the action of the spring 18. In this position, the pawl 9 engages with the cutout 8 of the wheel 6 also under the spring action 18.
If the wheel 6 is actuated in the direction of the arrow 20, its first angular displacement drives the pawl 9 and with it the arm 11 on which it is mounted, against the action of the spring 18. This spring 18 further tending to keep the parts 22 and 23 in engagement, the movement of the arm 11 drives the arm 13 through the tube 12 and releases the hook 14 from the fixed hook 19.
At this time, the cover 2 is free and opens under the action of its spring.
It carries with it the body 5 carrying the arms 11 and 13 with the pawl 9, as well as the wick cover 4 - which uncovers the wick.
As the movement of the wheel 6 follows that of the grinding wheel 7 rubbing on the pyrophoric stone, ignition can take place as soon as the cover is open (fig. 6), the grinding wheel then turning freely on its axis without any resistance other than the friction on the pyrophoric stone.
From the foregoing description, it is easy to understand that, if, when the cover is closed, the pawl 9 is on the top of one of the teeth of the teeth 8, it can dovetail on the arm 11, without that ems hook 14 of arm 13 to engage with fixed hook 19.
The fact that all the movable members of the device are attached to the cover 2, which moves away from the wick when the spark emerges, prevents the dust from the pyrophoric stone from coming in the long run to hamper the movement of these members. The assembly of these members is, on the other hand, facilitated by the fact that the movable members are mounted on the body 5 which is itself mounted on the cover 2.
According to fig. 7 to 9, the cover 2, articulated at 311 on the body 1 of the lighter, is subjected to the action of a spring 32 which tends to open it.
The grinding wheel 7 in contact with the pyrophoric stone 211 is actuated by hand by means of the wheel 6. The cover 2 is retained in its closed position by two hooks 36, 37 entering into engagement with one another and formed on the ends of two levers 3, 8, 39.
The first part of the movement printed on the wheel 6, with a view to igniting the lighter, opens the cover 2 under the influence of the spring 32. The control for opening the cover is effected from the as follows: The first element of the kinematic chain formed by the wheel 6 causes the rotation of the grinding wheel 7 which is integral with it. The latter drives by friction the last element of the cine matic chain, consisting of a lever 40 with the rigid arm 38 having a spout 36.
This lever 40 is pivoted on a pivot screw 42 fixed in the cover and passing through a slot 41 made in the lever 40. It can be seen that the lever 40 driven by the grinding wheel 7 against the action of a 4: 3 spring which tends to always bring it back to the same starting position, causes the hook 36 to move relative to the hook 37. This movement releases the cover 2 which opens under the action of its spring 3'2.
When the cover is open, the spring 43 pushes the lever 40 forward, up to # -. that the pivot screw 42 abuts on the end of the slot 41. In addition, this lever 40 simultaneously performs a rotational movement around the pivot screw 42, the thrust of the spring 43 being eccentric with respect to the axis of pivoting of the lever 40. This rotation brings the lever 40 into its starting position shown in the drawing.
When closing the cover 2 by pivoting about its axis 31 located in a plane much lower than that of the vier 40, the front face of the latter executes an oblique path with respect to the grinding wheel 7. This face therefore comes in the last part of the closing movement in contact with the grinding wheel 7. The lever 40 is then slightly pushed back against the action of the spring 32.
In order to allow. one of the hooks 36, 37 to be erased without leaving the lever 40 from its starting position, the lever 39 is pivoted on an axis 44 and subjected to the action of a spring 45 tending to maintain a spout 46 in contact with the body 1 of the lighter. This spring 45 is provided sufficiently weak relative to the spring 43 so that, during the. closing the cover, the lever 39 is pushed back, while the arm 3.8 remains in position.
Figs. 10 to 12 - show a third variant embodiment which differs somewhat from. the one described above. Indeed, the lever 40 is mounted in a similar manner; however, its end acts on a lever 47 pivoted on an axis 47a integral with the cover 2. This lever 47 is subjected to the action of a spring 48 tending to keep it engaged with the end of the lever 40.
A hook 50, fixed: rigidly on the body 1 of the lighter, is intended to engage with a hook 49 provided on the end of the lever 47. When closing the cover 2, the hook 49 is pushed against the action of the spring 47a by the hook 50.
Figs. 13 to 15 show an alternative embodiment in which all the elements of the electronic chain are mounted on the body 1 of the lighter; only the hook. cover retainer 51 not forming part of said chain being mounted on cover 2.
The wheel 6 carries a ratchet wheel 52 cooperating with a pawl 54 mounted on a part 53 rigidly fixed to the bit holder. This pawl 54 is subjected to the action of a res out 55 tending to move it away from the ratchet wheel 52.
This eliquet 54 is articulated at 62 on a lever 61 pivoted on an axis 6i1 rigidly fixed to the part 53. On this axis 60 is. also pivoted a lever 56 subjected to the action of a res out 58 and carrying a hook 57.
The cover 2 carries a stop 59 which, in the closed position of the cover 2, pushes the pawl 54 against the action of its spring 55, so as to bring the pawl 54 into engagement with the ratchet wheel 52. The spring 55 is mounted so as to lift the pawl 54, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, to bring it back to its position (the start. The shaft 62 is provided of sufficient length to abut on the lever 56 and the 'drive against the action of its spring 58.
When the wheel 6 is rotated, the pawl 54 is driven towards the. left of the. fig. 15. This pawl in turn drives the lever 56 via the axis 62. so that the hook 57 slides on the hook 51 mounted rigidly in the cover and unlocks the latter which opens under the action. of its spring 32. The spring 55 raises the pawl 54 and withdraws it back until a nozzle 64, provided on the lever 61, abuts on the body 1 of the lighter. So the. knob is released and can be operated freely to cause the lighter to ignite.
When the cover is closed, the hook 57 is pushed back against the action of its spring $ 5 by the hook 51, then at the end of its travel. the stop 59 pushes the pawl 54 into the position shown, against the action of its spring 55.
The lighter object of the present invention has all the advantages, on the one hand, of a lighter with a pop-up cover and, on the other hand, of a semi-automatic lighter. Indeed, the cover always locks in one and the same closed position when it is lowered by a retaining device opposing two stops to one another, and can only be released by actuating the organs provided. for the control of its opening.
On the other hand, the control of this or verture also controls the ignition of the lighter; but unlike the lighting devices used on automatic lighters, it is not the opening of the cover which actuates the dial, but the rotational movement imparted by the hand to the latter which actuates the organs releasing the knob. lid. It follows quite naturally that if the lighter has not been ignited during this first operation of the mo lle, the latter can be actuated again without it being necessary to close the cover. beforehand.
The accidental opening of the cover. is practically impossible, because to cause it, it is necessary not only to print a rotation with the wheel, which is already difficult to achieve accidentally, but also to overcome the resistance of friction that the pyrophoric stone pressed by a spring against the grinding wheel offers naturally at this rotation.
In the embodiment illustrated by fi-. 1 to 6-, the teeth intended to engage with the pawl could also be cut in the. grinding wheel or in another solid part thereof. One could even use for this purpose directly the teeth of the grinding wheel, intended to rub against the pyrophore stone.
The pawl 9 could be replaced by a member mounted fixedly on the arm 11 and having its own elasticity. Likewise, in order to subject one of the retaining stops to an elastic action so as to cause the automatic locking of the cover when it is lowered, this stop could have its own elasticity.
