<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Jumping hand mechanism for a timepiece The present invention relates to a jumping hand mechanism for a timepiece, comprising a wheel mounted idly on the axis of the hand to be driven, an integral drive member of this axis and coupled to said wheel by means of an elastic coupling allowing an angular bearing between this member and the wheel, and an escapement device which allows said member to advance step by step at a frequency lower than that of said member. wheel.
The mechanism which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that this exhaust device comprises a pawl fixed in rotation to said drive member and which is engaged in the internal teeth of a fixed ring gear centered on the axis of the needle, this toothing having an angular pitch determining the desired advancement of the needle, said pawl, which is movable in an approximately radial direction, being actuated by a cam formed by the edge of an opening of said wheel,
cam shaped so that the pawl is withdrawn from the toothing against the action of elastic return means and jumps from one tooth to the next in the crown after said wheel has turned by a determined angle.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism which is the subject of the invention. Fig. 1 is a plan view of this embodiment constituting a jumping second mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
The jumping second mechanism shown comprises a second wheel mounted wildly on an axis 2 of a jumping second hand, not shown. This axis 2 carries a drive member constituted by an arm 3 integral in rotation with said axis.
The arm 3 is elastically coupled to the wheel 1 by means of a cut flat spring 4 which has a central spangle 5 mounted on a cylindrical bearing 6 of the arm 3 and two curved elastic arms 7 and 8 taking support, the first on a pin 9 integral with the wheel 1, and the second on a lever 11 pivoted on the arm 3 at a point 12 eccentric with respect to the axis of rotation of the latter.
The lever 11 carries at its free end 13 a pin 14 which penetrates into an opening 15 cut out in the second wheel 1, and has in its middle part, a nose 16 engaged in the internal teeth 17 of a fixed toothed ring 18 housed in a recess of a bridge 19 of the movement. This toothing 17 ,. wolf tooth, has sixty teeth.
The mechanism shown works as follows The second wheel 1, which turns jerky in the direction of arrow A (fig. 2) at a rate of one revolution per minute and five steps per second, is supported by the rear edge 21 of the opening 15 against the ankle 14 integral with the lever 11.
This edge 21, which forms a cam, is inclined so that the rotation of the second wheel 1 causes the rotation of the lever 11, in the direction of the arrow B (fig. 2) against the action of the arm 8 of the spring 4 which flexes elastically.
As long as the nose 16 remains in engagement with the tooth against which it rests, the arm 3 remains im-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mobile and it is the increasingly accentuated bending of the arm 7 of the spring 5 which allows the rotation. of the second wheel 1 with respect to said arm 3.
Once the nose 16 of the lever 11 has reached the top of the tooth (by describing a curvilinear path centered on the pivot axis 12 of the lever 11) the elastic arms 7 and 8 of the spring 4 suddenly cause the nose 16 to pass through the following hollow of the toothing 17, the arm 3 then turning sharply by a sixtieth of a turn in the same direction as the wheel 1.
The shape of the edge 21 of the opening 15 is determined so that the passage of the nose 16 from one tooth to the next occurs every five steps of the wheel 1, so that the arm 3 and the needle seconds driven by the latter will beat the second.
In the mechanism shown, the second wheel 1 and the arm 3 are directly superimposed and the lever 11 is located for the most part in the same plane as the arm 3. The lever 11 and the arm 3 are both made up of cut-out elements. of approximately equal thickness and are pivoted at 12 by means of a pin 22 threaded into an end part 23 of the lever 11 which is superimposed on an end part 24 of the arm 3 which is axially offset from the rest of the arm and which is housed in an opening 25 of the second wheel 1.
The lever 11 and the arm 3 are housed in the recess of the bridge 19 in which the fixed toothed ring 18 is fitted, a recess which has a diameter approximately equal to that of the second wheel 1.
The mechanism shown has a very compact form. It may be smaller, in plan, than the known mechanisms comprising an escapement member arranged outside the second wheel. In elevation, it only includes two superimposed worktops, which will facilitate its adaptation to very flat movements.
The wear of the cam formed by the edge 21 of the opening 15, the wear of the pin 14 and that of the nose 16 will have virtually no effect on the precision of the movement of the seconds hand and on its angular setting. Indeed, the second wheel 1 will tend to take a position slightly more advanced with respect to the arm 3 as a result of the wear of the cam 21 and of the pin 14, but the wear of the nose 16 and of the teeth 17 on the other hand, will tend to advance the arm 3 with respect to the second wheel 1 so that it will result, to a certain extent at least,
compensation canceling out the effects of wear on the various moving parts.
The mechanism described would also be suitable for controlling a jumping hand intended to indicate the minutes. In such a variant, the wheel -1 and the axis 2 would respectively constitute the minute wheel and the axis of the minute hand of the movement.
