Wind thruster of a boat We know the disadvantages of film sails rotating around a mast: statically by lant, to install a mast to your boat to which a sail is attached by its edge, is to hope to fly properly in a aircraft hull attached to the leading edge of its wing. Also the topsail of the tall ships of yesteryear, supported by its mast along its line of thrust, remains the model of the sails.
It has been proposed to replace the skin wing with a wing like an airplane wing, working cantilevered and pivoting around a mast after which would be fixed. articulated rib tails, but these theoretical designs do not seem to have entered the realm of realization, probably due to a fundamental error which keeps the canopy a center of thrust deviating sharply and in a way difficult to control from the center of drift and the center of gravity of the boat.
The object of the present invention is a wind thruster for a boat in the form of a wing-sail, of which at least the leading and trailing edges are profiled, this thruster being characterized in that the ballast located in the axis of the boat at a point close to the center of the centreboard and pivoting around a vertical axis passing substantially through the center of thrust of the wing-sail.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a rigid wing-wing according to the first embodiment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a rigid and flexible mixed wing-sail according to the second embodiment.
Fig. 3 shows a certain modification of a detail of the raile-veil according to FIG. 2, and fig. 4 shows a respective trailing attack profile of the mixed wing-sail according to FIG. 2, but which is orientable.
The wing-wing according to fig. 1 consists of a symmetrical biconvex profile.
Fig. 1 shows such a wing 1 shown in perspective, this wing having a symmetrical biconvex profile which is the only one which is recommended for a wing working as much on one side as on the other, bordered by marginal flanges 2 which, as is known , increase the thrust, but which here also serve to strengthen the wing mechanically. A pivot 3 is located in the extension of the thrust axis 4 of the wing which, as we know, is at a distance 5 equal to 1/4 of the depth of the profile, at least in the field of incidence. weak interesting navigation against the wind.
The pivot 3 rotates in a vertical bearing represented by 6, integral with the boat, placed in the axis of the boat and in the vertical center of the centreboard, and can be moved by means, for example, of a handle 6a or all another known means, it being understood, however, that no force acting on the wing 1, other than the will of the pilot, will not be able to cause this wing to pivot. This arrangement is particularly interesting, because it makes it possible to control the sail without leaving its cabin, the ceiling of which can be crossed by the landing 6.
The main advantage of a sail pivoting around its center of thrust, and statically balanced with respect to its pivot, lies in the fact that, with the freshening wind, we will only have to reduce the thrust by reducing the angle of attack. at a value all the more lower than the incidence of maximum thrust the stronger the wind; it is practically possible to take reefs with a finger on the handle 6, as one slows down an automobile engine by reducing the throttle.
Despite its great insensitivity to strong winds, the rigid wing-sail, as presented here, will only be suitable for boats with low displacement. Let us now move on to the description of a wing-sail with a larger surface and even better meeting the requirements of sailing.
Fig. 2 shows in perspective a mixed, rigid and flexible wing, which could be described as a tandem biplane wing. It is composed of a rigid frame constituted as follows: a solid base 8 supporting on the one hand four uprights 9a, 9b, 10a and 10b profiled as 1 (fig. 1), connected longitudinally ( 9a and 10a on the one hand, 9b and 10b on the other hand) by a longitudinal member 11a respectively 11b preferably tubular, and suitably crossed by spacers 12, and transverse cross members 13.
A screen of flexible material 15 is stretched in the manner of a blind, starting from one side of the base 8 to end at the other, passing over the side members 11. At each end of the flexible material 15, which is substantially rectangular , a halyard 16 fixed in the middle of a rigid end edge 17 of the end of the flexible material 15 and passing through a fairlead 18 allows said flexible material to be tensioned by means of a cleat 19 integral with the base 8 which carries in addition a pivot 3. Each plane of the biplane com wing therefore carries three support elements oriented in the same direction, a flexible element 15 between two rigid elements, for example 9a and 10a.
The distance between the leading edge of the uprights 9 and the pivot will no longer be 1/4 of the depth of the wing in tandem, but greater, the center of thrust of the assembly being what is known in aerodynamics, carried back. The distances 21 and 22 between the flexible material and 9, 10 and the profiles of the uprights 9 and 10 are not necessarily the same, and can be adapted to the aerodynamic needs of the assembly, such as the relative depth of each element.
The edges of the flexible material 15 in the direction of its length would advantageously be arranged as shown in detail in FIG. 3 for one end. The flexible material 15 is not connected directly to the end edge 17 subjected to the traction of the halyard 16 but sewn with a slight play around the rope supports 24 and 25 integral at their two ends of the end edges 17. What it is tightened by acting on the halyards 16, it is therefore not the flexible material 15 itself, but the rope supports 24 and 25, the flexible material being able in turn to be stretched by means, for example, of tapes 26 passing through holes 27 of the terminal edge 17.
The rope supports 24 and 25 are, for example made of copper braid as used in electrical engineering, or any other suitable material, and profiled to give a leading (24) and trailing (25) edge to the flexible material 15 such that the aerodynamic characteristics of the whole rigid profile 9, flexible material 15 and rigid profile 10 become optimum.
The successive tightening device described with regard to FIG. 3 allows these characteristics to be infinitely nuanced by playing on the natural elasticity of the flexible material, and these possibilities will be increased by the choice of flexible material 15 which can range from stiff wormworm canvas, bordered to the extreme flatness by the ribbons 26 first and the halyards 16 then - honest sail of a father and a sailor forced to face a hard blow -, passing through increasingly thin and elastic fabrics, to coated fabrics (neoprene, butyl, etc.)
of extreme elasticity which can also be varied independently in the direction of the length and the width - sails often diggable - even very weak wind by the fine racer.
But the arrangement of the support elements 9, 10 and 15 in FIG. 2, can be further varied in a way that FIG. 4 gives an example. The rigid uprights ensuring the solidity of the biplane airframe are not profiled, but of cylindrical section 28 surrounded by profiles 29 orientable around the cylindrical supports 28: it is thus possible to obtain high-lift effects giving a very high thrust per square meter of wing area .
