Apparatus for dispensing a flowable substance The present invention relates to an apparatus for dispensing measured quantities of a flowable substance, comprising a body having a cylinder communicating with a supply port, a one-way discharge valve placed in the body. lower side of the cylinder, a storage container on said body for supplying the flowing substance to said orifice, a piston capable of sliding in the cylinder, and a tilting handle, accessible from the outside and capable of being actuated at the hand. It is characterized in that the piston has a helical surface extending from its front face.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention and two variants.
Fig. 1 is a section of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a section on II-II of FIG. 1. Figs. 3, 3A and 3B are respectively an elevational view and two end views of a member that this embodiment comprises.
Figs. 4 and 4A are respectively an elevational view and an end view of the first variant.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the second variant.
The apparatus shown in Figs. 1 to 3 comprises a distributor 1 slidably mounted on a support 2. A removable container 3 is mounted on the distributor 1, the opening facing downwards. It contains the substance to be dispensed in measured quantities. The container is fixed to a connector 4 of the distributor 1 by means of tabs 5 and 6 carried respectively by the neck of the reservoir 3 and by the connector 4. To mount the container, the distributor 1 is moved away from the support 2, the dispenser and placed on the mouth of the container, and the dispenser 1 and container 3 are rotated relatively to each other to engage the tabs 5 and 6.
The tabs 5 are inclined, the tabs 6 are level. They could be inclined in the same way as the tabs 5. The distributor 1 and the container 3 fixed on it are then turned over in one piece and mounted on the support 2. The container 3 is retained on the distributor 1 by a screw 7 opposite to an end face of a tongue 5 of the container, which thus prevents reverse rotation of the latter which would allow it to be released. Screw 7 is inaccessible when distributor 1 is mounted on support 2.
The distributor 1 is locked on the support 2 by a not shown pin urged by a spring.
A mechanism for expelling the substance comprises a piston 15 in a cylinder 16 integral with the distributor 1. The piston 15 is pushed outwards by a helical spring 17 which turns it around and which bears against the end. cylinder flange. The piston 15 can be moved in the cylinder 16 to expel a measured amount of the substance through a one-way relief valve, not shown, consisting of a self-sealing rubber melon, and supported in a nozzle 19 screwed into the distributor. The movement of the piston 15 in the cylinder is controlled by a hand lever 20 mounted on a pivot pin 21.
The piston 15 admits a constant quantity of the substance to be dispensed into a chamber, not shown, disposed in front of it in the distributor 1, and it has a fixed stroke. At the start of the stroke, the piston 15 delivers to the container an amount of substance regulated by the piston timing, so that a determined measured amount of substance is discharged through a valve in the nozzle 19.
During the recoil of the piston 15, a vacuum is created in the chamber of the distributor 1, thus sucking the substance into this chamber much faster than would occur only under the action of the weight of the substance. The dimensions of the passages for the substance can therefore be small, thus increasing the active path and consequently the volumetric efficiency.
The expulsion mechanism further comprises a lumen 28 for the entry of air into the reservoir 3. This lumen is separated from the interior of the receptacle 3 by a wall 29. The diameter of the piston 15 is slightly reduced at 15B, i.e. from the section where the piston protrudes from the cylinder 16, so that when in the forward position air passes freely from the atmosphere to the inlet lumen 28 by the space included around part 15B of the piston. Suction is produced by the pressure drop in tank 3.
Without this light 28, as the clearance between the piston 15 and the cylinder 16 must necessarily be small, the air will not be able to enter the reservoir 3 to establish the pressure there, which would continue to decrease if the pumping continued; braking and ultimately preventing discharge.
Another advantage of having the lumen 28 is manifested if the substance being dispensed has a high viscosity. As a result of this viscosity, an air bubble which could form in front of the piston 15 could rise very slowly through the substance in the container. It has been observed in certain cases that this bubble is entrained in the cylinder 16 in preference to the substance, if it is not at least 12 mm above the cylinder when the piston 15 is actuated for the next stroke.
By providing the opening 28 for the re-entry of air and by placing a wall 29 at least 12 mm high between it and the front end of the piston, this drawback disappears.
The piston 15 (fig. 3, 3A and 3B) comprises a shoulder 36 of helical shape which begins at an end face 15A of this piston. In the variant shown in FIGS. 4 and 4A, the piston 15 has a helical groove 37 which also begins at the end face 15A of the piston.
In the two forms shown, different amounts of substance can be dispensed, within the range of adjustment determined by the longitudinal length of the shoulder 36 or of the groove 37, by rotation of the piston. The shoulder 36 and the internal wall of the groove 37 constitute cut helical surfaces cooperating with a supply orifice.
Finely graduated quantities of substance can be obtained by fixing the rotary piston 15 by engaging a grooved or toothed end 38 of this piston with a complementary opening 39 formed in a fixed plate 40. The latter is mounted so as to be able to be easily removed from the reservoir 1 when the latter is away from the support 2. It is then possible to adjust the angular position of the piston 15 around its axis and to put the plate 40 back in place to keep the piston in the chosen position.
Fig. 5 shows another device for rotating the piston 15 in order to obtain variable dispensed quantities. A toothing 38 of the piston engages with a toothed rack 41 which is normally urged by a coil spring 42 in one direction and adjustably held in the opposite direction by a threaded pin 43 movable by means of a nut 44.
