Fuel injection device The present invention relates to a positive fuel injection device.
This device is characterized by an injection pump comprising a cylinder having a bore in which an injection piston slides, the latter being provided with an axial discharge duct communicating with two radial channels spaced apart longitudinally, two compression sleeves. adjustment surrounding the piston and connected to means for their longitudinal displacement being arranged to control each communication between one of said radial channels and a discharge chamber,
the whole being arranged so that said sleeves serve to determine by their positions one the instant of the start of the injection and the other the end of this injection.

The device shown comprises a fuel feed pump 1, a fuel injection pump 2 and a regulator 3, forming an assembly which can be mounted on the the engine or be removed as a whole. .
The feed pump 1 is a gear pump. In a variant, the feed pump 1 could form a separate element of an assembly comprising the injection pump 2 and the regulator 3 and be connected by a conduit to the injection pump.
The feed pump 1 receives the fuel from a tank (not shown) via the line 5 and delivers it to the injection pump 2 via the line 6 which is connected to an inlet chamber 38 of the pump d injection 2.
The injection pump 2 comprises a cylinder 7 engaged in a bore of a housing 8 to which it is fixed by means of bolts 9.
The piston 19 of the injection pump 2 is actuated by the cam 10 carried by the camshaft 11, intended to be driven by the engine supplied by the device, at the speed of the crankshaft quin of this engine, which is a six-cylinder four-stroke engine. This is why the cam 10 has three lobes, so that the piston 19 performs three strokes corresponding to three injections per revolution of the crankshaft.
The camshaft 11 rotates in a ball bearing 12 and one. bearing 13. A mounting flange 14 is provided for fixing the assembly to the motor.
. The camshaft 11 carries a helical-toothed pinion 15 meshing with a helical-toothed pinion 16 wedged on a shaft 17 driving the feed pump 1.
The cylinder 7 has a bore 18 in which the piston 19 is mounted. Six injection ducts 20 open into this bore 18, each of which leads to a connector 21 intended to be connected to the injector of one of the cylinders of the engine by a pipe 22.
The cylinder 7 is provided, in alignment with the bore 18, with a chamber 23 closed by a plug 46 and in which is mounted a: discharge valve 24. This discharge chamber 23 communicates with a channel 25 opening into the bore 18 facing a groove 26 of piston 19.
Thus, at each delivery stroke of this piston 19, fuel is sent through the valve 24 and the channel 25 to the groove 26 from where a distribution groove 27 leads it to the orifice of one of the injection ducts 20, this groove 27 placing the groove 26 successively in communication with each of the outlet orifices 20 during the reciprocating movement and of the rotation of the udder 19.
The piston 19 is provided with an axial un- load duct 28 starting from the inner end of this piston 19 and terminating. to a radial passage 29 opening into a groove 30 of the piston 19.
The cylinder 7 has a discharge chamber 31 through which the piston 19 passes and in which is disposed an axially movable sleeve 32 which surrounds the piston 19 in the vicinity of the groove 30. This sleeve 32 is moved axially by means of an eccentric lug 33 carried by a rotary shaft 34 integral with an arm 35 at the end of which is articulated a rod 36 actuated by the regulator 3.
The chamber 31 is placed in communication by a channel 37 with the intake chamber 38 which communicates with an intake channel 39 opening into the bore 18 of the cylinder 7. A second channel 39a opens out of the bore. 18 opposite the channel 39 and communicates with a chamber 38a connected to a fuel return conduit in which is mounted a calibrated relief valve (not .represented) intended to maintain the desired inlet pressure.
This room 38a communicates with the room 31 by a channel 37a.
The chamber 31 also contains a second sleeve 90 surrounding the piston 19 and cooperating with a groove 96 of the latter which is located between the groove 30 and the inner end of the piston 19. This groove communicates with the discharge duct 28 a, piston through a radial passage 95.
The sleeve 90 is displaced axially by means of an eccentric lug 91 carried by a shaft 92 integral with an arm 93 at the end of which is articulated at 94 a rod 36a actuated by the regulator 3.
The injection pump 2 is lubricated by the oil which arrives via a channel 40, passes through a filter 41 and arrives in the lower part of the bore 18 via a channel 42. On the channel 44 connecting the channel 40 to the filter 41 is connected a channel 43 which supplies the oil to lubricate the guide 54 of the piston 19. A channel also brings oil from the channel 40 to the bearing 13.
A pinion 47 (FIG. 7) carried by a shaft 48 also meshes with pinion 1.5 of the camshaft 11. This shaft 48 carries a pinion 49 which meshes with a pinion 50 solid in rotation with the piston 19.
The piston 19 is made integral in rotation with the pinion 50 by a flat part 51 sliding in an opening of corresponding section of a part 52 carried by a plate 53, held pressed against the pinion 50 by helical springs 58 and 59 who, at the same time,
thus maintain this pinion in place axially. The piston 19 can thus perform its reciprocating movement while being forced to rotate around its axis with the pinion 50.
The guide 54 slides in a random part of the casing 8 and carries a roller 55 which rolls on the cam 10 of the camshaft 11, so that, during the rotation of the latter, the lobes of the cam 10 move positively. the piston 19 in a direction tending to move it away from the axis of this cam 10, that is to say in the direction corresponding to the delivery stroke of the piston 19.
The outer end of the piston 19 has a head held in contact with a plate of the guide 54 by the springs 58 and 59 which are supported by their ends opposite the plate 53 on a plate 57 carried by the piston 19 by means of 'a wedge 56. The springs 58 and 59 thus return the piston to its external dead center and keep the roller 55 in contact with the cam 10.
The regulator 3 is housed in a housing 60, fixed to the housing 8 by means of bolts 61. The regulator shaft 62 is coupled to the camshaft 11 and rotates with the latter.
The shaft 62 of the regulator has a splined part 63 on which is engaged a cross groove 64. The latter supports the weights 65 of the regulator, which are pivotally mounted on this cross, and each of these weights acts on the flange 66 of the sleeve 67, via a ball bearing 68.
The sleeve 67 is mounted so as to be able to move axially on the shaft 62 of the regulator and it has at its end opposite the flange 66 a part provided with shoulders 69 and 70 forming seats for the springs 71 and 72.
In the housing 60 is disposed a lever 73, part of which takes the form of a yoke 74, the branches of which embrace the shaft 62 of the regulator. This lever 73 is articulated to the sleeve 67 by pins engaged in openings of the branches of the yoke 74 and it is mounted at its lower end on a pivot carried by an arm 75 (fig. 1 ) integral with a shaft capable of rotating in a bore of the casing 60 and carrying outside the latter an operating arm 4.
The rod 36, which controls the sleeve 32, is articulated to the lever 73 at 73a in the vicinity of the free end thereof, while the rod 36a, which controls the sleeve 90, is articulated to the lever 73 at proximity of the point of articulation of the latter on the sleeve 67..
The upper end of the lever 73 carries a cam 76 intended to cooperate with a stop plate 77 of adjustable position so as to limit the tilting movement of the lever 73 in the direction in which it controls an increase in the flow rate of the lever. injection pump, by action on rod 36 and sleeve 32.
In the opposite direction, the stroke die the upper end of the lever 73 is limited by a resilient stop 78 adjustable by means of screws, so as to determine the minimum flow rate of the injection pump.
A rod 82 operable by hand by means of a cable 82b and returned by a spring has a head 82a, which, when traction is exerted on the cable 82b, engages a projection 80 carried by the arm 35 and rotates the latter, so as to bring the sleeve 32 into a position such that the groove 30 is uncovered, whatever the position of the piston 19. The flow rate of the injection pump 2 is; then zero and the engine stops.
The arm 35 being connected to the lever 73 by the rod 36 and the latter being connected to the arm 93 by the rod 36a, it follows that the sleeve 90 is also moved when the arm 35 is operated by actuating the rod 82. . During the suction stroke (outward) of the piston 19, the fuel enters the bore 18 through the channels 39 and 39a.
During the discharge stroke of the pis ton 19, the fuel first flows back through the channels 39 and 39a and returns to the tank through the chamber 38a and the calibrated discharge valve. When the orifices of the channels 39 and .39a are covered by the piston 19, the fuel can still flow back through the discharge duct 28, the groove 96 not yet being covered by the sleeve 90.
As soon as this groove is covered by the sleeve 90, the piston begins to discharge the fuel through the valve 24, as long as, throughout this part of the stroke, the groove 30 is covered by the sleeve 32. Of the valve 24. , the pumped fuel passes through the channel 25 and the groove 26 and the groove 27 of the piston to that of the injection channels 20 with which this groove 27 communicates at the moment as a result of the rotation of the teat 19.
As has been seen, the groove 27 communicates successively with the injection channels 20 during the successive reciprocating movements of the piston. When, continuing its discharge stroke, the piston 19 comes to the position where the groove 30 is uncovered by the sleeve 32, the fuel flows back through the duct 28 into the chamber 31 and the injection stops.
Thus the position of the sleeve 90 determines the moment at the start of the injection and the relative positions of the sleeves 32 and 90 determine the flow rate of fuel per injection.
The respective positions of the sleeves 32 and 90 are determined by the position of the lever 73 which itself depends on the position of the sleeve 67 of the regulator and on the position of the pivot point of the lower end of the lever 73, the latter position can be modified by acting on the control arm 4.
When acting on the latter to control an increase in engine speed, it causes, by means of the arm 75, a movement to the right, with reference to FIG. 5, of the lower articulation point of the lever 73. This results in a tilting, in an anti-clockwise direction, of the lever 73 around its articulation axis on the sleeve 67 of the regulator and therefore a displacement towards the left of the rod 36.
The rod 36a, which is articulated to the lever 73 near its axis of articulation on the sleeve 67, does not suffer. significant travel. The displacement of the rod 36 causes an upward displacement of the sleeve 32, which increases the flow rate of the injection pump.
As the engine speed increases, the sleeve 67 moves to the right under the action of the centrifugal governor, which rotates the lever 73 clockwise around its lower articulation point. and results in a decrease in the flow rate of the injection pump by movement to the right of the rod 36 and urne increase in the injection advance by movement to the right of the rod 36a.
When the operating arm 4 is actuated so as to move to the left (in fig. 5) the lower point of articulation of the lever 73, this lever pivots clockwise and moves the lever. rod 36 to the right, thus controlling a reduction in the flow rate of the injection pump.
When there is a variation in the engine load and the position of the maneuvering arm 4 is not changed, the resulting speed variation causes the lever 73 to pivot around its lower articulation point, so as to control an increase in the flow rate of the injection pump when the load increases and vice versa.
In a variant of the device described and shown, the regulator could be omitted and the arms 35 and 93 could each be connected to an individual control mechanism, so that the position of each of the sleeves 32 and 90 could be modified independently. ment on the other.
