<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Mr. Harry Ralph i C A R D 0. for: Improvements to fuel pumps for internal combustion engines.
English patent application in favor of August 13, 1927. This invention relates to internal combustion engines with distribution by sheaths and injection of liquid fuel, of the type in which each sheath or sleeve receives a combined movement of oscillation and pressure. comes and goes of a floating lever or balance which itself receives at one point a rotational movement of an eccentric or of a crank knob, is connected at a second point to the sleeve, for example by the intermediate of a spherical coupling or other flexible coupling, and is retained at a third point by a slide or by a pivoting lever, one end of which is connected to the floating lever and the other articulated to the casing or to any other fixed part of the engine.
The aim of the present invention is to provide
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
an improved mechanism for controlling and adjusting the fuel injection pump (s) of such an engine.
According to the present invention, the plunger of a fuel pump for an engine of the type mentioned above is actuated by means of a suitable mechanism by the floating lever which actuates the distribution sleeve.
When the invention is applied to a polycylindrical internal combustion engine, the plunger of each of the fuel pumps is suitably actuated by the floating lever which actuates the sleeve from the distributor to the cylinder to which the pump is pumped. fuel sends fuel.
However, other arrangements can be employed if desired.
In either case, when the floating lever is held at one point by an articulated connecting rod, the plunger of the fuel pump is advantageously actuated by this connecting rod, while the suction valve or else the suction valve and a separate overflow valve controlling a downflow passage are controlled by cams or eccentrics mounted on a rotary shaft operated by the crankshaft.
This shaft also advantageously constitutes the pivot or fulcrum of the articulated connecting rod. The engine is advantageously of the type where the fuel is injected without atomizing air by an injection device of fuel provided with an automatically operated fuel injection valve, the fuel pump being of the type in which only the middle part of each compression stroke is used for fuel injection, the start and the end of each compression stroke being rendered ineffective by opening the suction valve or a separate overflow valve.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The plunger of the pump is preferably set so as to be actuated during its compression stroke by the horizontal oscillating movement of the floating lever, and in this case the arrangement is advantageously chosen such that the lever moves at its horizontal speed. maximum rate, during the active period of injection, thus causing such rapid injection of fuel.
It will be seen that in an engine according to this invention, the violent forces, similar to shocks, which the plunger piston causes when it completes the effective part of its compression stroke are absorbed by the relatively massive mechanism which actuates the sleeve or sleeve of distribution.
The invention may be carried out in practically a number of ways, but only one form of construction is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a cross section showing the control mechanism of the fuel pump and
Fig 2 is a similar view on a larger scale showing the construction of the fuel pump and the manner in which the valves are arranged and operated.
In the form of construction shown, the engine comprises a cylinder A with circulation of cooling water, the walls of which are provided with intake and exhaust ports A1, A2, controlled by a disc sleeve. mobile tribution B, inside the cylinder. In the sleeve or sleeve B, a piston C is driven by a reciprocating movement.
A combined movement of oscillation and back and forth is communicated to the sleeve B by a mechanism comprising a floating lever D, one of the ends of which is connected.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to the sleeve, for example by means of a ball joint or other flexible coupling, as indicated in And, A rotational movement is communicated to the lever D at a certain point of its length, by a knob of crank F mounted on the crankshaft F1 and engages a suitable lever pad. The F1 crankshaft is operated at half the speed of the motor shaft via suitable gears.
The other end of the lever D is connected by a pivot G1 to. the end of one of the arms G2 of an elbow lever G articulated in G3 to any fixed part of the motor, this lever serving to force the adjacent end of the lever D to move in an arc of circle.
The other arm G 4 of the lever G is connected by means of a connecting rod H to a guide part H1 capable of a back and forth movement in a guide H2 and connected by a part H3 to the lower end of the plunger I 'from a fuel injection pump.
This plunger J passes through a guide J1 and operates inside a suitable bore J2 of a box or casing J3. At the upper end of the box J3 is formed the compression chamber J4 of the pump, this chamber being closed by a threaded cap J5 which encloses an automatic relief valve J6 of the ball type, controlling the discharge of the pump. fuel through the discharge pipe J7 which leads to the fuel atomiser J8.
The fuel is admitted to the compression chamber J4 by a suction or intake valve K with lift or of a similar type controlling an intake or suction passage K1, the stem K 2 of this valve being provided at its lower end with a cap K3 against which rests a spring K4 which tends to keep the valve continuously closed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The suction valve K is capable of opening positively under the action of a plunger L controlled by a spring 11 and actuated by an eccentric or a cam 12 mounted on a shaft 13 which is controlled by means of of an appropriate mechanism by the tree to. cranks and also serves as a pivot for lever G.
Between the upper end of the tappet 1 and the cap K3, on the lower end of the valve stem k2, is arranged a wedge M articulated in M1 to a support M2 which can oscillate around a pivot M3 under the action of an M4 threaded rod passing through an M5 socket and fitted with an M6 adjusting nut and an M7 locking nut. It can therefore be seen that when the support M2 is made to oscillate, the wedge M can be moved so as to act as a spacer of variable thickness between the members K3 and 1 and thus modify the moment opening and closing the suction valve K.
If desired, a second valve similar to K and functioning in a similar manner by the action of a cam or an eccentric mounted on the shaft 12 can be employed to act as an overflow valve. controlling an overflow passage of the compression chamber of the pump, the suction valve or the suction and overflow valves being actuated in known manner such that only the middle part of the valve each compression stroke at plunger J is used to discharge fuel through valve J6 into the discharge passage.
It can be seen that with the control mechanism of the fuel pump according to the present invention, the violent forces, similar to shocks, which occur when the plunger of the fuel pump injects the fuel, are absorbed by the lever mechanism to control the distribution valve sleeve, which
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the mechanism must in any case be relatively solid, which avoids the need to establish a separate relatively massive mechanism to control the plunger of the fuel pump,
Of course the details of construction can be varied without departing from this invention and although this has been described with particular reference to engines in which the floating lever is retained at one point by a pivoting lever, it can also be. applied to engines in which a point of the floating lever is forced to move approximately in a straight line by a slide or the like.
CLAIMS.
