<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
On a représenté
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Si l'or//reporte à la fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
Revendications.

Mr. Doublas Joseph MARTIN and Mr. Félix RIESENBERG. Engineers, both residing in New York, Bourg de Máhattan, New York State, United States of America.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines, and more particularly to engines in which the ignition is carried out according to the principle of engines! of the Diesel or semi-Diesel type.
One of the aims of the invention is to establish an internal combustion engine employing a driving pedestrian and an auxiliary piston to the compressor sliding both in a cylinder, the stroke of the compressor piston being small in comparison with that of the driving piston, and the piston compressor operating in such a way as to increase the compression or to over-compress
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
over-compression to an ignition point while the engine piston elbow moves from side to side of the. neutral point, so that when the fuel charge is admitted to the cylinder, this elbow occupies the appropriate position to receive the maximum driving force of the driving piston.
By virtue of the improved construction and arrangement of parts which are the object of this invention, the driving piston causes compression to a point which may be called a "minor compression point", and the auxiliary piston or compressor raises this pressure to a point which may be termed "maximum compression on ignition", so that the greatest compression work is done by the auxiliary piston or compressor during its relatively short stroke and preferably by means of eccentrics, cranks, or other similar members having a short stroke and mechanically connected to the motor shaft or crankshaft which - comprises an elbow or crank arm mechanically connected to the motor piston, the eccentrics, etc. ..
being wedged at 90 relative to the engine piston elbow.
Thanks to this division of the work of compression it is possible to give the moving parts a greater lightness than in the construction of the usual type adopted in diesel engines.
Another advantage obtained lies in the fact that the start-up is made easier. The driving piston is in fact a good distance beyond the neutral point at the high compression point, so that it balances the work performed by the compressor piston and facilitates rotation. Due to the construction and operation of this engine
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of this engine flashbacks cannot occur,. The fact that the parts are lighter and that the movement of the auxiliary piston or compressor is relatively low allows this engine to work at higher speeds than is possible in the case of conventional engines whose compression stroke is long. performed by a single piston.
In stakes of this kind, the compression can be adjusted by varying the areas or movements of the respective pistons and the variation in operation can be achieved by angular adjustments between the driving crank and the eccentrics. Adjustment can be made by varying the length of the eccentric or crank, for example by pulling the eccentric inward or pushing it outward from the position it occupies as the crankshaft.
Further adjustment may also be effected by virtually increasing or decreasing the length of the compression cylinder by means of adjustable bearings provided on the rods of the eccentrics where these rods connect to the lower edge of the annular compressor piston.
The engine according to the invention further comprises the use of water, air or another coolant, or a combination of several agents, circulating through annular spaces provided in the cylinder and between the cylinder. and the auxiliary piston or compressor, and the quantity or flow rate of this agent can be regulated.
Another object of the invention is to provide an engine of this type comprising a removable cylinder head so that, after having removed the cylinder head, it is possible to remove
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to remove a worn or otherwise deteriorated auxiliary piston and replace it with a new one, and this can be done at low expense and without the need for experienced workers.
In view of these various objects and others, the invention consists in certain features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be described in more detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings. wherein :
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section showing the pistons just before total compression and ignition.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken at a right angle to FIG. 1.
Figs 3, 4, 5, & 6 are more or less schematic sections showing the positions of the pistons during engine operation.
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section showing a variant.
Fig. 8 is a sectional detail on a larger scale of a device for adjusting an eccentric on the crankshaft.
Fig. 9 is a section on 9-9 (fig.8) 1 shows the engine cylinder; The cylinder is supported by a relatively heavy and robust base 2 constituting a housing in which is mounted a crankshaft 3. In the cylinder 1 are arranged a motor piston 4 and an auxiliary piston or compressor 5. The compressor pistol 5 is constituted by a sleeve sliding in cylinder 1 and the engine piston sliding in sleeve or compressor piston 5.
The working surfaces of these pistons can of course be as desired, but it will be noted that the end of the piston
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the auxiliary piston will move a larger volume than the driving piston, either because of its size or because of its stroke. The engine piston 4 is connected by a connecting rod 6 to the elbow 7 of the crankshaft, 3. The auxiliary piston 5 is connected by two connecting rods or eccentric rods 8 to collars 9 surrounding eccentrics 10 which are mounted on the crankshaft which 3 on either side of the elbow 7 and which are wedged at 90 with it. this.
The connecting rods 8 can be adjustably connected to the auxiliary piston or compressor 5 so as to: vary the length of the stroke of this piston, and this can be done in many ways. As an example of a device making it possible to achieve this result, there is shown. corners 11 arranged on either side of a bearing 12 which supports the axis 13 to which the connecting rod is connected, and these corners can be adjusted using screws 14 to vary the position of the bearing, and by hence the degree of compression.
Another adjustment device is shown in figs. 8 and 9. In these figs, 10 denotes the eccentric, which has slots 15 around which boxes or walls 16 are made in one piece. The crankshaft 3 has an angular part 17 receiving the slotted part of the eccentric, and locking screws 18 are supported in the boxes or walls 16 and bear on the crankshaft at two opposite points of this crankshaft, so that 'By adjusting these screws, the position of the eccentric on the crankshaft can be adjusted to vary the stroke of the compressor piston.
The cylinder 1 is provided with a removable cylinder head 19 which can be fixed in place in any suitable manner. We have represented
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
has shown, for this purpose, screws 20 which protrude through the cylinder head and are screwed into the wall of cylinder 1. The cylinder head 19 supports intake 21 and exhaust valves
22 communicating with the usual lines of engines of this type and although the valves are shown are pressed by springs and actuated by rocker arms 23, it is understood that the invention is not limited to the particular form of the valves. valves or their control means.
The cylinder head 19 also supports the injector 24 by which the fuel charge is injected into the cylinder when the compression is such as to ignite it, and any normal or other apparatus may be used to inject. the fuel jet, the invention not being limited in this regard.
The cylinder head 19 is easily removable, so that if the auxiliary piston becomes worn or otherwise rendered unsuitable for service, it can be removed through the end of the cylinder and replaced with a new one. a relatively low expense.
It is necessary in an engine of this type, to cool the cylinder walls and the pistons. For this purpose, annular water chambers 25 and 26 are provided in the upper and lower parts of the cylinder 1. Also provided in the auxiliary piston 5 are external annular cooling chambers 27 and 28 which communicate respectively with the water chambers. water from the cylinders via ports 29. An intake pipe 30 communicates with the lower part of the upper water chamber 25 of the cylinder 1 and an exhaust pipe 31 communicates with the upper part of the cylinder head. The lower chamber 26 is provided with an intake pipe 32 communicating with its lower part and an exhaust pipe 33
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
pement 33 communicating with its upper part.
Of course, the direction of water movement can be reversed if desired, and any desired number of cooling zones can be employed. itself
If the gold // refers to fig. 1 it will be noted that the various pipes and chambers located at the upper part of the cylinder have a larger surface area than the water spaces of the lower part of the cylinder, and this is to illustrate the fact that it is desirable that the upper part of the cylinder receives a greater amount of coolant per unit time than the lower part of said cylinder, for the purpose of dissipating excess heat which develops at the top of the cylinder.
This can be done in many ways, and the principle has been shown only in a general way, since one of the features of the invention is to control and thus adjust the re- cooling of the engine in accordance with the heat generated in the various parts of the engine,
The operation of the diesel type engine described above will now be explained, with particular reference to FIGS. 3, 4, 5 and 6 which schematically represent the positions of the driving piston and of the auxiliary piston or compressor during the working cycles.
In the schematic figures 3, 4, 5, 6, short cranks 34 have been shown which cooperate with relatively long cranks 7 mounted on the crankshafts 3, these short cranks which constitute a variant of the eccentrics having been shown in these diagrams because they allow to better realize the relative positions of the parts.
It will be noted that, when the engine piston e is in neutral (fig. 3), the short cranks 34 are 90 behind the crank 7, so that, when the latter passes into neutral, the short cranks 3 rise and
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
impart to the auxiliary piston or compressor 5 an upward movement which not only prevents any loss of compression which would result from the downward movement of the driving piston in the movement of this piston beyond neutral but, due to the construction, increases or raises the compression so that the air in the cylinder reaches the ignition temperature and that, the fuel then being projected in a sprayed state into the compressed air, the engine piston is forced downwards by the combustion effect of the mixture.
line 4 represents the relative positions of the two pistons approximately at the midpoint of the driving stroke.
The compressor piston has stopped supercharging and the driving piston occupies the maximum power transmission position - and descends while the expansion of the burnt gases takes place. Note that the compressor piston is then in upper dead center.
Fig. 5 shows the positions of the pistons which are both at the end of the air intake or working stroke, and fig. 6 shows the position of the pistons at the midpoint of the compression stroke and the exhaust or sweep stroke. As the exhaust valve 22 is open, this figure particularly shows the exhaust strokes of the piston.
In fig. 7 shows an engine in which use is made of an elbow instead of eccentrics to actuate the auxiliary piston.
The presently preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown, but it is understood that the invention is capable of receiving other embodiments and numerous modifications without departing from its spirit. .
