Timepiece comprising a changing decoration The present invention relates to a timepiece, in particular a watch or a clock, preferably having a changing decoration on the side of its dial. This decoration can either change automatically while the watch or the clock is running, or be changed at will by acting manually on a movable element of the decorative device.
The variations in the appearance of this decoration are produced by the aberration or linear alteration of a base image visible through a refractive medium which is transparent and which presents at least on one of its faces soft waterings. inclined facets, the timepiece having for this purpose at least two superimposed elements, one of which can be moved relative to the other, the lower element having the base image and the upper element constituting the refractive medium, the inclined facets of which deform the image differently when one of the elements is moved successively in various positions with respect to the other.
We see that in this timepiece, to obtain the desired effect, the combined action of two essential factors is used: the principle of the refraction of light through a transparent body and the principle of the displacement of this body or element with the base image.
If we move from time to time one of the elements relative to the other, each time we obtain a different decoration of the room, while if we connect one of the elements, in particular the transparent and refractive element, to one of the organs of the clockwork movement, we obtain a part whose decoration is animated, that is to say changes continuously at sight of '#il if the movement is perceptible, imperceptibly if the movement is imperceptible.
The accompanying drawings represent, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are plan views, partially cut away, of a changing decoration device of a timepiece, these views showing three. different aspects of this decoration.
Fig. 1a is a diametral section along 1-1 of FIG. 1 of one of the parts of this device. We see on the fi-. 1 a dial comprising a disc B having a peripheral hour circle and a central zone A, which presents a decoration formed by parallel rulers. These rulers are alternately dark and light, the light lines being considerably wider than the dark lines. In the example chosen, the light lines have exactly double the width of the dark lines.
This zone A constitutes only one of the elements of the decoration of the dial, this one being completed by the effects created by a second element C arranged parallel above the zone A. This element C is also constituted by a disk. Its diameter is substantially equal to that of the central zone A of the disc B. The two discs are concentric, the disc C being wedged on the barrel of the hour hand of the not shown clockwork movement: The disc B is preferably metallic, while the disc C is made of transparent plastic, for example of synthetic glass.
The disc C, which can be seen in section in FIG. 1a, presents a series of parallel hollow moldings having a cross section in the form of V. The width of the moldings of the element C was chosen equal to that of the dark lines of the zone A of the disc < I> B.
Fig. 1 shows, in the part covered by the represented part of the disc C, the appearance that the complete dial presents when the molds of the disc C are arranged parallel to the lines of the zone A. Because of the refractive effect caused by the inclined facets of the moldings of disk C, zone A appears through this disk deformed in the following manner. The surfaces D and E show to whoever looks at the dial a portion of the light lines a and b adjacent to the central dark line c. Depending on the direction of the light hitting the device, the line appearing through D is less clear than that appearing through E. It is for this reason that facet D has been hatched.
The facets F and G, respectively adjacent to the facets D. and E, show by refraction the dark line C. The facets H and 1 in turn let appear another portion of the light lines. If we continue the examination, we see that the same phenomenon occurs several times to the right and to the left of the median plane. If we change the direction of the incident light, that is to say if we change the orientation of the timepiece, we see a variation in the nuances of the bands, the design remaining the same. . If we now move the disc C angularly with respect to the disc B, we obtain a completely different drawing, because the moldings of C intersect the lines of the zone A.
This is what can be seen in fig. 2, where the disc C has been rotated at an angle of 451, with respect to the position it occupied in FIG. 1. An offset of 900, on the other hand, gives the pattern shown in FIG. 3.
When the disk C moves with the hand of the hours, the decoration of the room changes continuously but imperceptibly, taking on various aspects intermediate to those represented in the drawing for three hours. For the next three hours the same process is repeated, in reverse order, and the part takes on the appearance shown in fig. 1 after these three new hours.
A faster variation can be obtained by wedging the disc C on the floor of the minute hand or, which is even more effective, on the axis of the central seconds hand. In the latter case, the decoration of the ca dran changes visually by presenting at times the appearance of a moiré and shimmering fabric with a very beautiful aesthetic effect.
When the disc C is placed on the barrel of the hour hand, the hands are arranged above it. That of the hours can also be suppressed and replaced by an index protruding from the periphery of disc C.
When the disc C is wedged on the axis of the seconds hand, the hour and minute hands can be placed between the two elements B and C on condition that the moldings of the discs are radial because the facets of the slack Readings of the C-disc will only widen or narrow the needles which will always appear straight and straight. To leave complete freedom as to the appearance of the moldings and their profile, the two hands can be replaced by transparent disks with flat parallel faces and each provided with a peripheral index.
Element C could also be formed by the protective glass, the internal face of which would present the refractive facets. In this case, it is the central zone A which should be movable and would be driven by one of the hand drive members or by a gear transmission from another moving part of the clockwork movement.
We could also use the oscillating movements of the rotor in a self-winding watch, the decoration being in this case a peripheral zone, or, if we want to be satisfied with changing the appearance of the dial from time to time, we could mount one of the elements A or C in such a way that it can be moved by hand, for example using a rotating bezel.
As has been said, the decoration will present different aspects depending on the design of the moldings and lines of elements C and A. These lines and moldings can in particular be arched instead of being rectilinear; they could for example constitute concentric arcs with constant spacing or else a series of arcs having the same curvature and their centers arranged on the same straight line, as well as arcs starting from the center.
To vary the effects, the upper disc C could be slightly tinted, in whole or in part. It could, for example, have tinted sectors and white sectors, or else - sectors of different colors, while still being transparent. The lower disc can also be tinted by zones or by sectors, the changes in the superposition of the colors which result therefrom creating additional modifications of the decoration.
The facets of the moldings of the disk C can be flat, as in the example shown, or concave or convex; some of these facets may be concave, the others convex. As for the stripes or lines of zone A, they can be obtained by guilloche or by other usual means of decoration giving matt lines or shiny lines. They can also be painted in various colors.
The spacing between the two disks B and C will be chosen as a function of the desired sharpness for the lines of the decoration, these becoming blurred as the two disks are moved apart. A completely fuzzy decoration could give the impression of boasting soft waves.
The moldings of the disk C may appear on the upper face or on the lower face thereof, and can be obtained by molding from a guilloche die. The base image could be formed by raised lines or by hollow lines.
