Process for the preparation of a substantive 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid arylide. It has been found that by condensation of 2,3 - oxynaphthoic acid or
their functional acid derivatives with amino azo dyes of the pyrazolone series of the following general composition
EMI0001.0010
where R is any aromatic radical that should not contain any water-solubilizing groups, and K is hydrogen or a substituent that does not make water-solubilizing, leads to new 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid arylides which are characterized by remarkable properties as primers in ice dyeing.
They are mostly yellow to orange-colored, crystalline bodies which, after being converted into their alkali salts, dissolve easily in dilute alkali lye and do not tend to hydrolyze and flocculate even after standing for a long time.
This fact is surprising because it is known that 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid arylides with higher molecular weight arylide residues are difficult or impossible to bring into solution. For example, the alkali salt of the arylide from 4-amino-: 1,1'-azobenzene is only very sparingly soluble in dilute alkali.
In numerous cases, the new arylides show a high substantivity towards the vegetable fibers and color them in shades of red to greenish yellow. An addition of formaldehyde to the primer bath, as is often used in ice dyeing to improve the stability of naphthols.
is not necessary with the new primer components. Even without the addition of formaldehyde, primers can be obtained that can be dried. and can be kept unchanged for a long time.
The amino azo dyes used as components of the composition given above can be used by coupling the corresponding aminophenyl-pyrazolones with. diazotized aromatic amines can be obtained in neutral to weakly alkaline medium.
The condensation with 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid or its derivatives can be carried out according to methods known per se, although it was not to be expected that the reaction would proceed smoothly in spite of the use of such high molecular weight and therefore in some cases sparingly soluble compounds .
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of a noun 2,3-OYynaphthoesäurearylids, which is characterized in that 2,3-oxynaphthoic acid with 1- (3'-aminophenyl) -3-methyl- 4- (2 "-methyl-4" -chlorobenzene-1 "-azo) -5-pyrazolone condensed.
Example: 34 parts by weight of 1- (3'-aminophenyl) -3-ethyl-4- (2 "- methyl-4" - chlorobenzene-1 "-azo) -5-pyrazolone of the following formula
EMI0002.0001
(obtainable by coupling. of diazotized 1-amino-2-methyl-4-chlorobenzene with 1- (3'-aminophenyl) -3-methyl-5-pyrazolone) and 19 parts by weight 2,
3-Oxynaphthoic acid is heated to 80 ° C. in 400 parts by weight of anhydrous toluene. 8 parts by weight of phosphorus trichloride are then added dropwise to this mixture, while stirring, and the mixture is then heated to the boil for several hours. It is suctioned off hot and washed with toluene, then with a little methanol. The residue is boiled with dilute soda solution.
The arylide obtained in good yield is, after drying, an orange-colored powder which crystallizes from nitrobenzene in orange-colored needles with a melting point of 260.degree. After conversion into the sodium salt with a little alcoholic sodium hydroxide solution, it is easily soluble in dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide solution with a golden yellow color.
