Process for the preparation of a fat-soluble azo dye. It has been found that new, very valuable azo dyes are obtained if the diazo compound of an aminophenylhexa hydrobenzene or derivatives thereof which contain no water-solubilizing groups are combined with an azo dye component without water-solubilizing groups which contains a hydrogenated carbon ring.
The dyes obtained in this way dissolve extremely easily in organic solvents, oils, fats, waxes and products made from them and are therefore capable of extensive use. They have good to very good lightfastness and sublimation fastness.
Compared to the known azo dyes containing no or only one hydrogenated ring, the new dyes with at least two hydrogenated rings in the molecule are characterized by their significantly increased solubility in the solvents customary for the so-called fatty dyes (Sudan dyes). The process forming the subject of the present patent is characterized in that 1-di- (3-methyl-4-aminophenyl) -hexahydrobenzene is tetrazotized and the tetrazo compound is coupled with 4-oxyphenylhexa-hydrobenzene.
Example 29.4 parts of 1-di- (3-methyl-4-aminophenyl) - hexahydrobenzene of the formula:
EMI0001.0020
are dissolved in 500 parts of water and 60 parts of hydrochloric acid 20 B6 with gentle heating and tetrazole at 0-5 ° C. with 13.8 parts of sodium nitrite in aqueous solution. The clear tetrazo solution slowly runs into a suspension, cooled to 0 C., of 36 parts of 4-oxyphenylhexahydrobenzene in 2000 parts of water and 14 parts of sodium hydroxide.
When the coupling is complete, the dye is pressed, dried at about 50 ° C. and then ground. It dissolves very easily in a finite, strong yellow color in the usual organic solvents, as well as in fats, oils and waxes. The colorations achieved with it are extremely lightfast and sublimation fast.
