On commence à agiter.

A process for preparing 10-ethylene-ketal from cyclo-10-keto-heptadecanol-1-one-2. It has been indicated in main patent N 281122 that one can obtain, in the pure state and with good yields, 1,2 cyclic ketols having 10 to 18 ring members, by internal condensation of esters derived from it. vant of monohydroxylated lower aliphatic alcohols and open-chain dicarboxylic acids, the chain of which has, in length, from 10 to 18 carbon atoms between and including the two carboxyl groups, if certain legal conditions are observed of the execution of the reaction.
These conditions are above all: appropriate dilution of the reagents, anhydrous medium, exclusion would practice complete oxygen. They are. described in detail in the main patent, which relates to a process for the preparation of cyclo-pentadecanol-1-one--, as an ester of tridecamethylen-1,13-dicarboxylic acid and of a monohydric lower aliphatic alcohol.
The subject of the present additional patent is a process for the preparation of 10-ethylene-etal from eyclo-10-keto-lieptadecanol-1-one-2, a new compound which finds applications in the perfume industry.
This process is characterized in that an ester of 8-keto-pentadecane-1,15-dicarboxylic acid ketalized with ethylenic glycol and a lower aliphatic alcohol nionohy droxylated is slowly added to an inert solvent. , anhydrous, heated, vigorously stirred and containing an alkali metal. molten state and finely. divided, while maintaining the reaction mixture under conditions of substantially complete exclusion of oxygen, the metal derivative formed then being decomposed to obtain the free ketol.
The oxygen exclusion conditions can advantageously be such that the total weight of oxygen contained in the reaction mixture does not even represent one thousandth of the weight of the ester placed in this book.
It is possible, for example, to introduce above the reaction mixture as little as possible nitrogen containing at most 0.2% oxygen.
Unlike the process claimed in US Pat. No. 228268, the process, object of the present invention, appears to give better yields if the reaction is not carried out too slowly and if the dilution is not too great.
The following example shows how the method of the invention can be carried out in its practical details. However, other inert gases or hydrocarbon vapors such as benzene, xylene, etc. can be used instead of nitrogen.
5.5 to 6 liters of xylene distilled over sodium are heated to about 140 ° C., after having replaced the air located above the cold xylene with dry absolute nitrogen. In order to remove all traces of water, 100 cm3 of xylene are first distilled, which is collected in a small flask. The container is then opened. reaction and 65.6 g of pure sodium are introduced therein. We start to agitate. A series of plugs and valves, connected to a source of absolute and dry nitrogen, prevent the introduction of any trace of oxygen during the reaction.
266 g of undiluted dimethyl ester, 8-keto-pentadene-1,15-dicarboxylic acid (Helv. Chemica Acta 11, 504) are then added over one hour and thirty minutes, at the reflux of the boiling xylene. [1928]), ketalized with ethylenic glycol. The reaction is exothermic and intensifies the boiling of xylene. When all the ester has been introduced, the reaction mixture is cooled to 20 ° C. 150 cm3 of ordinary alcohol are added slowly, so that the reaction temperature does not rise above 30 ° C.
Then the lower alkaline layer is separated and the remaining solution is washed until neutral. From this moment only, the product can come into contact with the oxygen of the air. The solvent of the neutral solution is distilled off. The remaining neutral residue weighs 213 g (which corresponds to 94.7% of the theoretical value). Distillation under a very high vacuum gives 190 g of cyclic products (P.
E. at 0.1 mm Hg: 190-2_00-210 C) which crystallizes completely in a few days. The yield is 83% of the theoretical yield. Crystallization from ether or methyl alcohol at a temperature between - 80 and - 20 C gives a well crystallized product, the 10-ethylene-ketal of cyclo-10-keto-heptadecanol-1-. one-2, melting at 48.5-50 C (95% yield)
and exhibiting the following physical constants: d4 '= 1.036 n6.0 = 1.4822 By treatment of this ketal with hydrochloric acid in alcoholic solution, cy clo- 10-keto-heptadecanol-1-one-2 can be regenerated.
The latter gives, with 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl chloride, a mono-3,5-dinitrobenzoate, melting at 106-107 C and of formula:
