Method of manufacturing a tubular connector, apparatus for carrying out this process, and tubular connector obtained by this process. The present invention comprises a process for manufacturing a tubular connector, an apparatus for carrying out this process, and a tubular connector obtained by this process.
An embodiment of the apparatus for carrying out the process that the invention comprises, as well as a connection obtained by this process are described, by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view with partial section of the apparatus. This view shows a particular stage of the application of the process in which the organs of the apparatus occupy an already advanced position, a blank being shown inside the matrix of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view with partial section of the members of the device in position (the closing or end of travel.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2, showing some details of the device, as well as how the blank to be shaped is there. placed.
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 2, showing other details of the device.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of a connection obtained by means of the apparatus shown in the drawing.
Fig. 6 is. a side view of the connector (Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the blank.
Fig. 8 is an end view of the blank. It is known that molded fittings, made of brass, for example, are unsuitable or fail to perform satisfactorily in many cases because such molded fittings have such porosity as to release certain fluids, such as, example, the .liquids or refrigerant gases, so that there is not only loss of these fluids, but also that their release into the atmosphere sphere is an element. danger.
On the other hand, the present method and the corresponding apparatus make it possible to manufacture fittings, from metals or alloys, such as copper, monel metal, nickel, steel and stainless steel. The fittings obtained by this process do not exhibit the porosity defects of molded fittings.
On fig. 5 and 6 of the drawing, we have shown a connector designated by 1; this connection comprises a cylindrical intermediate part 2 at one end of which there is a cylindrical part 3 of smaller diameter, joined to the intermediate part by a conical shoulder 4. At the other end of the intermediate part 2 , the connector is provided with an enlarged polygonal part intended for. receive a key. The angles of this polygonal part protrude from the intermediate cylindrical part. The blank, once stamped, is threaded internally at 7.
For many uses it may be advantageous to manufacture the fitting 1 from brass, although for particular uses other metals or alloys are also satisfactory.
On fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4, tin is represented. apparatus for convenient manufacture of fittings and application of the process. In the implementation of this process, use is made of tubular blanks 8 which contain the quantity of metal necessary for the formation of the connector. These blanks can be cylindrical tubular blanks, uniform over their entire length as to the thickness of their walls and their diameters. These tubular blanks can be cut out of drawn tubes to which it is easy to give the necessary diameters and wall thicknesses.
.When .the blanks are made of brass, they are heated to a temperature of approximately 590 C. It will be understood that other metals or alloys may require a higher or lower temperature in order to be able to work them . The blanks thus heated are placed inside an external die 9 which the apparatus comprises, this die 9 having a stepped borehole comprising a front cylindrical part 11 joined to a cylindrical intermediate part 10 by a conical shoulder 12, as well as an enlarged posterior part 13 of polygonal shape. The widened part 13 of the die can be connected to the intermediate part 10 by a conical shoulder.
The outer diameter of the blank is substantially equal to that of the intermediate part and when it is introduced into the die, it rests on the shoulder 12. The apparatus also comprises a stepped inner punch 14 which comprises a part cylindrical intermediate 15 of cross-section of shape corresponding to that of the intermediate part 10 of the die, but of smaller diameter, a front part 16 of cross-section of shape corresponding to that of the front part 11 of the die, but of smaller diameter,
and a rear part 17 -of transverse cross-section .of shape corresponding to that of the enlarged polygonal part 13 of the die and adjusted to slide therein. The punch is mounted on a reciprocating motion head 18.
When the draft is. introduced into the matrix, as shown in the position of fig. 1, the punch is introduced under pressure, so that one end of the blank is separated and forced inside part 13 of the die and forms the widened part 5 of the connection to be obtained.
This end can be turned back so as to form an enlarged part 5 .du fitting which is thick. At the same time, under the effect. of the punch 14, the other end of the blank is stretched and tightened between the anterior part of the die and the anterior part of the punch, as shown in FIG. \ ', while the metal of the blank is also expanded or driven back until it comes into contact. walls of 7a intermediate part 1.0. Starting from this outline, we obtain.
and the connection shown in FIGS. # and 6 with an anterior cylindrical part of diameter less than that of its intermediate part and of a thinner wall than that of this intermediate part and that of the blank before its introduction into the apparatus. The fitting shown is. of a model that fits many uses. After removing the punch, the fitting is driven out by the ejector key 19.
It happens. usually a few burrs or irregularities on the side of the front end of the fitting, but they can easily be removed, and small burrs which may exist in other places can be easily removed. The fitting described is usually internally threaded, as indicated in 7.
On the connector shown, the widened part 5, intended to receive a key, has 1-1-ne hexagonal transverse section. On some pipe fittings, for example, this part may have a shoulder on which one can. place a piping wrench. The fittings can also be externally threaded.
