<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
REVENDICATIONS.

DIE AND PUNCH FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF TUBING.
The Demand, eur has already described a method and an apparatus for the manufacture of pipes on a large diameter tube or manifold, according to which a punch placed inside the manifold, and moved by a piston or hydraulic cylinder or the like, pushes outward a portion of the wall of the manifold, previously heated, to the place where it is desired to constitute the tubing. It was anticipated that a die could be applied around the tubing on the outer surface of the manifold during operation.
The present invention relates to an improved die and punch for the manufacture of tubing of this type.
According to the present invention, the die comprises in its center a counter-punch, which is adapted to be applied on the head of the punch when the latter has, during a first operation, passed through the wall of the collector. After this insertion of the inner punch, and possibly heating of the formed tubing, the die carrying the counter-punch is applied to the outer surface of the manifold around the formed tubing, which on the one hand causes the proper conformation of the edges of the tube. tubing, and on the other hand the detachment of the punch which has passed through the wall of the manifold. These two operations can be simultaneous or successive.
In the latter case, provision is made for the counter-punch to be mounted so that it can slide in the die, so that, after having applied the die to the outer surface of the collector, the counter-punch is pressed in a second step. punch to detach the punch, and conform the inside of the tubing.
Indeed, the counter-punch provided at the center of the die is preferably of frustoconical shape, so that the internal surface of the tubing provided in the manifold will have the shape of a convergent-divergent.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
When the punch located inside the collector pierces the wall during the first operation, it can happen, if the head of this punch is too sharp, that tearing of the wall occurs because the head of the punch cools said wall too quickly. To remedy this drawback, it is provided, in accordance with the present invention, that the inner punch may include a hollow or recess at its top, so that the metal of this region retains its temperature and opens of itself more. easily under pressure. In this case, the counter punch will have a protuberance or projection which will penetrate into the recess of the punch which will ensure the centering of all the tools.
During the first operation, the inner punch goes through the wall of the manifold. It may happen, when this wall is thick and the internal diameter of the collector is relatively small, that the space available inside the collector to house the punch and the mechanism which carries it is insufficient given the length of the stroke that the punch must have. Also, in accordance with the present invention, a telescopic mechanism is provided for carrying the punch, comprising two pistons nested one inside the other and which move one after the other under the effect of the pressure. liquid to ensure the stroke of the punch.
It should be noted that the application of the counter-punch die taking off the pressed punch, it is no longer necessary to provide a double-acting system to bring the punch back, which consequently reduces the size of the carrying mechanism. of the internal punch.
The description which follows, with reference to the accompanying drawings given by way of example, will make it easier to understand the way in which the invention can be implemented.
Fig. 1 shows in cross section the large diameter tube, or manifold, with the inner punch having passed through the wall of the manifold.
Fig. 2 shows a detail of fig. 1 in which the punch does not have an end recess.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to figure 1 after application of the external die and separation of the punch.
Fig. 4 is a section on a larger scale of the tubing obtained with the aid of the apparatus.
Or the large diameter tube a to the manifold in which it is desired to provide, using the apparatus which is the subject of the invention, pipes or fittings b intended to allow the connection of small diameter tubes on the manifold.
As has been said, the apparatus comprises an internal punch c mounted on a cylinder mechanism, hydraulic or otherwise, which ensures from the inside the passage of the punch c through the wall of the manifold a as is see fig. 1 after suitable heating of the region where it is desired to spare the tubing b.
The apparatus also comprises an external die d which, in accordance with the invention, has in its center a counter-punch e.
After the inner punch c has passed through the wall of the manifold as seen in fig. 1, the die d is applied for example by a crankshaft system m controlled by pistons n and schematically shown in FIG. 1, so as to conform the edges of the tubing b on the outside, while the counter-punch e drives out the inner punch b and takes it off from the internal wall of the blank tubing b. This operation of applying the matrix may be preceded by heating the blank tubing if necessary.
On the other hand, it may happen that the internal punch c, by pressing against the wall of the collector by a too sharp apex a, causes cooling of the metal in this region from which tearing results.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of metal during the formation of the tubing b (fig. 1). To remedy this drawback, it is provided in accordance with the invention that a recess of conical shape, for example c1, is made on the head of the inner punch c.
In this case, the counter-punch e provided at the center of the die has a corresponding conical projection, for example el which engages as seen in the freezer 3 in the recess c1, which also has the effect of ef - fet to center the punch and the counter-punch during the operation shown in fig. 2 of the application of the matrix.
But it is obvious that this arrangement of recess c1 and projection c1 is only optional and that the ends of the punch and of the counter-punch can be given the shape shown freezes 2 in which the counter-punch simply fits on the head of the punch.
The sides of the counter-punch e are frustoconical as shown in the figure, so that by penetrating inside the blank tubing b, the counter-punch e slightly flares the upper part of the tubing b which ultimately, as seen in fig. 4, the eye profile of a converging-diverging tube, which facilitates the aerodynamic flow of fluid entering or leaving the manifold through the tubing b.
When the inner punch ±. must have a stroke long enough to pierce the wall thickness and the diameter of the manifold is small enough, the mechanism carrying said inner punch c must be telescopic in order to be able to fit inside the manifold, as shown on the face. This mechanism preferably supported by three soles or feet,. ±, which are applied in three regions of the internal wall of the manifold a, comprises a first cylinder g inside which slides a piston h itself consisting of cylinder shape to receive the piston i carrying the inner punch proper c.
The pressurized fluid enters the first cylinder g through the orifice k. ensures the lifting of the piston h., and passes through the orifice 1 of diameter smaller than 1 ± inside the cylinder h in order to raise in a second step the piston i carrying the punch.
It is not necessary to provide a double-acting mechanism to bring the punch back since this movement of the punch is produced by the application of the counter-punch e.
As seen in Figure 3, the recess e2 provided on the die to externally conform the edges of the tubing is such that, without additional machining, it is possible to weld on said tubing b the small-diameter tube that is to be connected to the tube. collector a. It spares in particular a slight chamfer b2 on the edges of the pipe to receive the weld metal.
It is provided, in accordance with the invention, that the counter-punch e provided in the center of the die may be independent of the latter and mounted so as to slide in the die. In this way, the operation of applying the matrix d can be speffecture in two stages: first application of the matrix ± proper and shaping of the outer edges of the tubing b then insertion of the counter-punch e. in the die to take off the punch c and flare in a frustoconical fashion the internal surface of the tubing b.
