<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

TUBE FITTINGS.
A problem which often arises in the art is that of connecting relatively small diameter tubes to a wall which may be either planar, for example a boiler tube sheet, or cylindrical, for example a large diameter tube constituting a wall. collector.
In general, to make these connections, we drill an orifice in the wall where we want to connect the - small diameter tube, and often even, we weld in the drilled hole a front end on which we will finally connect the tube.
The Applicant has already proposed making connections (or pipes) of this kind in one piece with the wall, by pushing back using a punch, located inside the manifold when it is a question of a collector, the metal wall outwards, after proper heating of the region of interest. A one-piece connection is thus obtained with the wall of the manifold and the lips of which are directed towards the side where it is desired to connect the small diameter tube.
The present invention relates to a method and devices for connecting tubes to: a wall, and its essential feature resides in that the method comprises at least one operation of driving the wall, directed in the direction opposite to that in which we want to connect the tube. If the depression is carried out until piercing the wall, a tube is thus obtained, the lips of which are directed to the opposite side where the tube will be located and for example towards the interior of the collector when it is a collector.
In this way, the lips of the tubes obtained serve mainly to stiffen the wall to which the tube is connected, instead of serving as connection surfaces as was the case in the prior processes.
To connect the tube to the tube thus obtained, the invention provides two ways of operating
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
1) The opening in the wall forming .. a conical bearing, is applied against it a conical or spherical seal provided at the end of the tube, This application is made, for example, in the known manner in the case of tubes superheaters on the collectors, by means of a caliper which assembles two neighboring tubes at the same time, the axis of the caliper being threaded onto a stud screwed into a recess in the wall.
2) Or, the tube of small diameter which it is desired to connect is introduced into the orifice made on the wall and welded or expanded to or in the lips of the tubing directed away from this tube. This produces a weld with recessing of 1-end of the tube which is of excellent strength. When operating in this way to connect tubes to a cylindrical manifold, it is possible in accordance with the invention, opposite each fitting, to provide an orifice in the manifold, thanks to which it will be possible to weld or expand. the end of the tube with or in the lips of the tubing, after which the orifice is closed by any suitable means.
It is also provided, in accordance with the invention, that the operation of driving the wall is not carried out as far as the perforation, but only so as to produce a hollow in said wall. This hollow can then be perforated in the opposite direction, so as to produce a tube whose lips are directed, in the known manner, towards the tube to be connected.
The advantage of this arrangement resides in that the tubing, instead of being pushed back purely and simply into the wall, is pushed back into the bottom of a sort of crater provided in the wall and which stiffens it, while ensuring an extra thickness of metal all around the final tubing, the lips of which are greatly reinforced at their base.
The general economy of the method which is the subject of the invention lies in that it only requires for the wall to which the tube is to be connected, either tube plate or collector, a lesser thickness of metal since the tubes stiffen the wall. , instead of reducing its resistance. As we work with thinner metal thicknesses, we can achieve a significant saving in material,
The description which follows, with reference to the accompanying drawings given by way of example, will make it easier to understand the way in which the invention can be implemented.

Fig, 10 shows the collector 9 after formation of the tubing and connection of the tube.
Consider a wall a on which we want to connect a tube. It has already been proposed to form a pipe on this wall by heating.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
first at the appropriate temperature the region where it is desired to make the tubing, then by driving a punch through said wall, the punch being located below the pin 2, so that the lips of the tubing b are directed towards the tube e which it is desired to connect to the wall a. The tube is then welded onto the tubing b.
According to the present invention, instead of punching the wall in the direction which raises the lips b towards the tube c, the wall a is punched in the opposite direction, as can be seen in FIG. 3, so that the lips of the pipe d are directed away from the tube c which it is desired to connect to said pipe.
To carry out the process, the region where it is desired to obtain the tubing is heated as before, then a punch is applied to the heated part, the head of which is shaped so as to push the metal, and finally open the tube. wall by pushing back the lips of the lip tubing, the thickness of which gradually decreases,
To assemble the tube on the tubing d thus formed, one can use a fixing by spherical or conical joints as shown .... Tie freezes 3. For this purpose, the shape of the punch is such that it gave a conical bearing to the inner edges dl of the tubing d. On the end of the tube c2 to be connected, a spherical or conical joint e is provided which engages in the conical surface d of the tubing.
In order to apply the ball joint to the conical seat, a caliper is used in the known manner! the two ends of which are applied to the spherical joints of two neighboring tubes CI and c2. The axis of the caliper! is threaded onto a stud g screwed into a recess a1 in the wall µ. This depression is obtained by punching said wall, after heating the region concerned. By screwing the nut h onto the stud g, the caliper is applied! on the spherical joints e and said joints on the conical bearing surfaces dl.
Instead of using this device for spherical joints, the tube c can be forced into the opening of the tubing d and expanded or welded in 1. as shown. On fig 4. In this way, an accompanied weld is made. a fitting of the tube e in the pipe d, which ensures a more perfect holding of the weld i in service,
In the case where, instead of applying to a flat wall, the process applies to a cylindrical wall such as that of a collector j, (fig. 5) the process is marl, that is to say say that using a punch located outside the collector j, there is provided in the latter a tubing k whose lips are directed towards the inside of the collector.
The advantage of this way of doing things, compared to that of the previous methods in which a punch located inside the manifold pushes the lips of the tubing outwards, lies in that the pushing back of the metal towards the inside of the manifold. collector is not accompanied by any tearing of the latter as could be the case in the prior processes since the metal is compressed instead of being lifted. In addition, this inward pressure of the metal ensures a greater wall thickness at the lips of the tubing k.
On the pipe k, the tube .9 is connected in a manner analogous to that described with reference to FIG. 4. It is internally welded in I on the lips of the tubing and embedded in the tubing. It can then be seen that the said lips of the pipe k, instead of serving only as connection surfaces for the welding of the tube, serve mainly to stiffen the cylindrical wall of the manifold j, which is thus reinforced instead of being weakened as this would have been the case if we had drilled a simple opening in the said wall. It follows that, for the same type of work, it is possible to use collectors n of lesser thickness and nevertheless having the desired resistance so that a significant saving in metal is made for the manufacture of the collector.
If the dimensions of the collector do not allow easy access to its interior for welding, it is planned, according to the invention, to provide, opposite the pipe k, in m, an opening.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ture through which the welding operation will be carried out 1. The opening m, with lips directed towards the interior of the manifold i is then closed by any suitable means, such as a removable valve shown in dotted lines. This valve consists of an axis .9. on which is threaded an oblong piece r which can be arranged obliquely in order to be inserted inside the opening m.
Once the part has been introduced, it becomes wedged on the lips of the opening m and then constitutes a fulcrum which means that using the nut s fixed on the axis, it is possible to tighten against the opening - the washer t closing the opening m with the interposition of the seal u.
It can be seen that the method of manufacturing a tube according to the invention essentially comprised an operation consisting in driving the metal wall in the direction opposite to that in which the tube is to be connected.
This operation, instead of being carried out, as in the cases described so far, until the wall is perforated and the tube is formed, can be stopped, as shown in FIG. 6, at the stage where one simply obtains a deformation a2 of the wall a which constitutes a sort of crater in the surface of said wall. In the bottom of the crater a2 thus obtained, with the aid of a punch located below the wall a, (fig. 7), we can then arrange in the known manner, a tube n whose lips are directed towards the tube c to be connected, which is welded in the ordinary manner to these lips, as in the case of fig. 2.
The advantage that there is in carrying out a first operation of driving the wall such as a2 (fig. 6) lies in that the subsequent punching in the opposite direction of the wall thus driven back, leads to a thickened base for them. lips of the tubing n, as can be seen in FIG. 7. The crater a2 formed around the tubing also contributes to stiffening the wall a, which can then be of less thickness to obtain the same qualities of resistance.
On the pipe n, obtained as it has just been described, it is also possible to weld the pipe e as shown in FIG. 8, as shown in FIG. 4 that is to say so as to obtain an embedding of the tube .2 in said pipe n,
The process described with reference to FIGS. 6 to 8 for a flat wall also applies to a cylindrical wall of collector j as shown in FIG. 9 and 10. A first depression of the wall inwards gives rise to the crater j2 (fig. 9) while a punch, located inside the tube, will then provide the tubing k in the known manner. center of crater j2, with the same advantages as previously described, and increased thickness at their base of the lips of tubing k.
The puncturing of the wall to obtain the tubes is always, as explained above, preceded by the heating of said wall, so as to achieve the suitable temperature gradient which allows the perforation of the wall.
Each driving or punching operation carried out with a punch located on the desired side of the wall may be accompanied by the application of a die on the opposite side so as to obtain a suitable conformation of the wall or the lips of the wall. the tubing during the operation.
Likewise, when punching from the outside, as in the case of FIG. 5, the cylindrical wall of a manifold .1 using an external punch, it is provided that one can have inside the manifold j a stiffening belt which keeps the tube its circular section 'during the operation, said belt having an orifice facing the place where the tubing k will come.
