Description
Process for arc fusion welding of butt joints Pipe ends The invention relates to a method for arc fusion welding of butt against each other pipe ends with an inner round seam using a non-consumable electrode.
Such welding of pipe ends with an internal round seam has lately been used to manufacture high performance heat exchangers get increased importance. Namely, in these heat exchangers numerous Small diameter pipes so closely spaced on a head piece be attached so that outer welds can not be placed. The ends the tubes are therefore drawn using an arc fusion welding process Inner round seam butt welded against the pipe socket, which is worked out on the head piece or were previously welded to the head piece as separate parts.
However, it has been found that it can with arc fusion welding It is difficult to achieve a uniform circular inner seam when the pipe ends butt against each other to produce, which forms a smooth transition between the two pipe ends. Frequently a phenomenon occurs in a very disturbing way, which is subsequently referred to as the "pull-in effect" is to be designated and that consists in the fact that the molten metal after bulges inside against the pipe axis. This forms in the area of the finished The weld seam eventually becomes a constriction, which becomes highly undesirable and uncontrollable Sequelae leads. For example, it can give rise to dangerous local conditions Overpressure as well as to local deposits of material and thereby to strengthen Corrosion in the area of the weld.
The drawing-in effect described is a special feature that only applies to the above-mentioned creation of a circular inner seam by fusion welding by means of arc occurs and that occurs during other welding processes (for example for external welding processes using a consumable tungsten electrode) does not exist. The pull-in effect is probably caused by a magnetic field that forms around the arc and acts on the molten ferrous Metal has an effect, but the causes of the pull-in effect have not yet been clarified. The pull-in effect is particularly pronounced in steels with about 1% Cr and 1.2% Mo, which is generally used in heat exchangers of the type in question here will. According to the invention, such a pull-in effect is intended to be avoided that the junction between the pipe ends on their outside during of the welding process in a manner known per se from a tightly fitted ring-shaped Metal sleeve surrounded ', which is welded to the pipe ends.
The annular metal sleeve can be designed as a separate part but it can also consist of one piece with one of the two pipe ends. When designed as a separate part, the metal sleeve is useful on its inside to be provided with a flange which lies between the butt ends of the pipes.
A further improvement can be achieved in that the Outside of the tubes in the vicinity of the weld in a manner known per se from surrounded by a granulated flux.
It is already known 'when welding round pipe seams where the root of the weld cannot be re-welded, a metal ring to be arranged on the root side of the weld seam and the circumferential seam on this metal ring weld through. Here, however, the two butted against each other are not Pipe ends after the arc fusion welding process using a non consumable electrode welded together, but between the corresponding machined pipe ends a fill seam is placed so that any with the initially described pull-in effect in context standing difficulties cannot occur at all. The invention now lies in the surprising finding based on the fact that the arrangement of a relatively small annular metal sleeve on the Outside of the inner round seam to prevent the occurrence of a pull-in effect significantly or even completely avoid it, although the metal sleeve during the welding process with softened.
The invention is intended below in exemplary embodiments on the basis of Drawings are described in more detail. F i g. 1 one off two different halves assembled partial cut, making the use of two different ribs of separate ring sleeves illustrated, F i g. 2 one Partial section illustrating the use of an external flux, and FIG. 3 one Partial section of a head piece wall, the ring sleeves in the form of around the holes shows worked ring-shaped grooves around.
The in F i g. The two different forms of separate annular metal sleeves shown in Figure 1 have been found to be very useful in preventing the pull-in effect. The ring sleeve 10A recognizable in the left half of Fig.l is about 1.6 mm wide and 0.8 mm thick and has an inner diameter such that it is close to the outer surfaces of a pipe socket 12 and a pipe in the region of the butt ends abutting one another 14 is present. On its inside, the ring socket 10A is provided with a projecting flange 16A of 0.5 mm width and the same depth. This flange lies in a correspondingly shaped groove which was created by machining an annular recess in the end of the connecting piece 12 and a corresponding recess in the end of the tube 14.
The flange 16B of the ring socket 10B, which is on the right-hand side of the F i g. 1, protrudes into a gap between the butt ends of the pipe socket 12 and the tube 14 into it. In this embodiment, the flange is 16B about 1.0 mm deep and about 0.5 mm wide. The gap also has the same width between the two pipe ends.
The effect of the ring-shaped metal sleeves 10A and 10B can be further increased by the fact that the outside of the pipe socket and the end part of the pipe that is to be welded to the socket is closely surrounded with granulated flux instead of the one otherwise used outer protective sheath made of argon gas. It appears that surface tension effects in the flux, which partially melts during the welding process, act on the molten metal and further reduce the tendency of the metal to shift against the axis of the tubes. The arrangement of flux on the outside of the tubes results in a smoother outer weld seam and a smaller inner weld seam, which also has smoother ribs. In addition, the entire welding process is made more flexible, and the effects of small errors in current strength and time sequence on the contour of the finished weld seam are reduced.
Figure 2 shows such a use of granulated flux on the outside of the weld. It can be seen that the flux 24 closely surrounds the pipe socket 20 and the end part of the pipe 22 to be welded on. In addition, FIG. 2 also shows a modified embodiment of an annular metal sleeve, namely one which consists of one piece with one of the two pipe ends. At the end of the pipe socket 20, an annular shoulder 28 is formed by milling, which tightly overlaps the pipe 22 to be welded on the outside. This embodiment is useful when one of the two pipe ends has a greater wall thickness and thus (because of the requirement for an inner diameter that is as constant as possible) a greater outer diameter than the other pipe end.
The pipe sockets do not need to be separate parts that were previously welded to the head piece and over the front surface of the head piece protrude, but they can also be worked out on the head piece. Also in one such case has proven to be the use of annular metal sleeves with or without additional use of externally arranged flux as very advantageous for Proven to prevent pull-in effects.
Die letztgenannte Möglichkeit läßt F i g. 3 erkennen. Am Grunde sind die Rillen 32 aus Festigkeitsgründen gerundet, und zwar zweckmäßig mit einem Radius, der etwa gleich der Rillenbreite ist.F i g. 3 shows such pipe socket pieces that are worked out on the head piece and consist of one piece with the head piece. In this embodiment, grooves 32 are milled out concentrically around the bores 34 in the head piece wall 30 on the outside of the head piece so that a tubular cylindrical ring 36 remains from each of the bores. The tubes 38 (of which FIG. 3 only shows a single one) are butt welded onto these rings. If the wall thickness of the rings 36 is kept approximately the same as the wall thickness of the pipes, ring sleeves according to the type of FIG. 1 use. However, it is more expedient to keep the wall thickness of the rings 36 somewhat larger (for example approximately 0.8 mm larger) than the wall thickness of the tubes 38 and analogously to the exemplary embodiment in FIG. 2 to incorporate annular recesses 40 into their end faces, so that a likewise annular shoulder 42 remains, which surrounds the pipes 38 to be welded on on the outside. The latter possibility allows F i g. 3 recognize. The grooves 32 are, if steel pipes 38 of about 9.5 mm inside diameter and 1.4 mm wall thickness are to be welded on, about 1.6 mm wide and about 9.5 mm deep. At the bottom, the grooves 32 are rounded for reasons of strength, specifically expediently with a radius that is approximately equal to the groove width.
So much for numerical data in the previous exemplary embodiments were given, these are only used to illustrate the scale Conditions. In principle, however, the invention is not based on the presence certain dimensions of individual parts or of the entire arrangement.
