Mechanism for automatically adjusting the ignition advance of an internal combustion engine. The present invention relates to a mechanism for automatically adjusting the ignition advance of an internal combustion engine, this mechanism being constituted by a coupling through which a driving shaft drives a driven shaft and comprising moving masses which, under the effect of centrifugal force, tend to modify the relative angular setting of the two shafts against an antagonistic force.
The mechanism according to the invention is characterized in that the action of the opposing force is exerted through two elements, respectively integral in rotation with the drive shaft and the driven shaft, one of them. these elements carrying a cam against which a movable pusher carried by the other element is elastically applied, all so that the value of the antagonistic force is a non-linear function of the relative angular setting of the two shafts.
With the mechanism according to the invention, it is possible to obtain a given curve of ignition advance even when the opposing force is supplied for example by a spring with a linear characteristic.
. The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism according to the invention applied to a spark ignition engine.
Fig. 1 shows, in axial section, the upper half of the embodiment, and FIG. 2 is an end view thereof with some elements in section or removed.
Fig. 3 is a cross section showing a detail.
In these figures, 1 indicates the driving shaft driven by the motor and on which a disc 2 is fixed; the shaft 1 has an end protrusion on which a sleeve 1 'forming part of the driven shaft can rotate freely and on which are wedged two sleeves, one of which, indicated by 3, is integral with the cam 4 of the breaker and the other, indicated by 3 ', has toothing 5. The drive shaft 1 and the driven shaft 1', 3, 3 'are angularly coupled to each other in a movable manner with the help of masses centrifugals 6 each provided with a toothed rod 7 meshing with pinion 5 of shaft 3 and mounted to move radially with respect to disc 2 of shaft 1.
The radial mobility of each mass 6 is achieved by means of a notch 8 formed in the mass and of a rod 9 fixed in cantilever to the disc 2, extending in the direction of the axis trees and taking place in said notch of mass 6.
On the sleeve 1 'are further wedged, by means of the sleeves 3 and 3', two transverse parallel plates 10 spaced from each other by an interposed collar 11 and each of which has a notch with parallel edges at each end. 12 forming guides. Between the guides 12 of each notch is disposed a guide roller 14, the two rollers 14 of the notches facing the plates 10 being mounted at both ends of a pivot 13 held in place on the plates 10 by washers d 'end 15.
Each of the two pivots 1.3 which, because of the assembly described, are movable in a radial direction with respect to the plates 10, carries an idle roller 16 and a balance 17 which forms two equal arms directed transversely to the axis of the plates 10. Each balance 17 is constituted by a folded piece of <B> U </B> section with each side pierced with a hole to give passage to the pivot 13, the roller 16 being placed between the two sides, and the rollers cor respondents 14 located on either side of the pendulum.
Between the two balances 17 are arranged two compression springs 18 which surround guides 19 fixed to the ends of the balan ciers 15; in this way, these balances can come closer to one another by compressing the springs 18 which tend to separate these balances from one another.
In a plane between the two plates 10 and outside the region occupied by the rollers 16 is disposed a ring 20 fixed removably on the rods 9 fixed to the disc 2 which extend in the form of appendages, which pass through holes in the ring 20 and carry nuts 21 to hold the ring 20 in place. The ring 20 carries, on its inner edge, two diametrically opposed cams 22 to each of which corresponds one of the rollers 16. The profile of each cam 22 approaches the axis of rotation in the direction in which the plates 10 rotate due to the separation of the centrifugal masses 6.
The cams 22, said inner edge of the ring 20, are in contact with the rollers 1.6 which are kept there forced by the springs 18, so that the rolling of the rollers 16 on the cams 22 in one direction can take place only with simultaneous bringing together of the two balances 17, and consequently with compression of the interposed springs 18 which, because of the transverse component of their thrust, tend to oppose the rotation produced by the masses 6.
The arrangement is such that, when the masses 6 move away from the axis of rotation, the plates 10 rotate relative to the ring 20 in the direction in which the rollers 16 are forced to climb the slope of the cams 22, so that the two rollers 16 and the two rockers 17 come together against the action of the springs 18. The pro son of the cams 22 are such that the value of the antagonistic force opposing. the action of the masses 6 is. a nonlinear function of the relative angular setting of the ring 20 and the plates 10.
The centrifugal force which acts, during operation, on the rockers 17, cooperates with the springs 18 to keep the rollers 16 forced against the cams 22. By giving the rockers 17 and the members they carry an appropriate mass, it is, consequently, it is possible to possibly reduce the importance of the springs 18.
In a variant of the mechanism described, the diametrically opposed cams could also be presented by the outer edge of a disc fixed to the shaft 1 ', 3, 3' and with these cams could cooperate rollers carried as previously by rockers my tees so as to be able to move radially on members fixed to the rods 9, these balances being connected to each other at, the location of their ends facing each other, by springs biased in traction and tending to bring the the two balances one on the other, keeping the rollers 16 applied to the cams of the disc.
The device described makes it possible to obtain, despite the linear characteristics of the springs, an ignition advance curve which can have any desired shape, the latter depending on the curve of the profile adopted for the cams 22.
The action of the springs 18 is exerted in a uniform manner on all the centri fuge masses 6, because this action is exerted through the balances 17,
