Automatically removable coupling between a starter motor and a starter motor The present invention relates to an automatically removable coupling between a starter motor and a starter motor. The object of the invention is to provide such a coupling allowing an engine (for example an internal combustion turbine engine) to disengage itself from the drive of the starting motor (for example an electric motor or a starting turbine. ) and keep clear after the engine has been started and is running by itself.
The coupling forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises an axially engaged clutch, the movable part of which can slide axially but not rotate relative to the shaft of the motor to be started, and centrifugal action means driven by the engine to be started and arranged to slide said part, against an antagonistic force, in a disengaged position when the engine to be started has reached a determined speed.
In a particular embodiment, the clutch may be of the claw type and its movable part may be constituted by a keyed sleeve on the shaft of the starter motor, this shaft having a recessed end to house a compression spring. sion which pushes the sleeve into the clutch position, the sleeve possibly comprising an outer radial flange capable of being actuated, against the action of the spring, by elements with cen trifuge action pivotally mounted on a part fixed to the shaft of the engine to be started.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the coupling according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is a section, on a larger scale, of a detail shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial section on 3-3 of FIG. 1, on a larger scale.
The coupling shown is used with an electric starter motor for cranking an internal combustion turbine engine until the latter spins by itself.
This coupling comprises a box 10 com taking an end wall 11 in one piece with the box which is on the other hand connected to an added end wall 12.
An annular member 13 driven by the starter motor is mounted. in an opening in the wall 11 by means of a support and thrust ball bearing 14 whose outer ring is clamped between retaining rings 15 and 16 held by screws 17 arranged in a circle and engaging the wall 11. The inner ring of the bearing is clamped between an outer shoulder of the member 13 and a shoulder 18 of a claw clutch part 19 keyed at 20 to the member 13, the clamping pressure being provided by a nut 21. The latter cooperates with a tongue washer 22 on the part 19 and with a stop ring 23 resting on an internal shoulder of the member 13.
It can be seen that the claw piece 19 is fixed axially and angularly with respect to the annular member 13.
The end wall 12 also has an opening in which is supported, by retaining rings 24 and 25 held in position by screws 26 arranged in a circle, the outer ring of a ball bearing 27 for support and thrust bearing. the shaft 28 of the engine to be started. This shaft 28 is keyed at 29 to a conical toothed wheel 30, the hub of this wheel being supported in the retaining ring 25 by a roller bearing 31.
Under the action of a nut 32 on the shaft 28, the toothed wheel 30, by means of a washer 33, clamps the inner ring of the bearing 27 against a support 34 which will be described later and which is thus held by abutment against a shoulder 35 of the shaft 28 on which the support is keyed at 36.
The inner end of the shaft 28 is keyed at 37 to a clutch sleeve 38 with claws, capable of sliding on the shaft, the adjacent ends of this sleeve and of the clutch part 19 comprising claws cooperants which are presented in commitment in 39.
A shoulder 40 at the junction of two aligned holes drilled in the shaft 28 forms a stop for a washer 41 against which rests one end of a compression spring 42 placed in the shaft, the other end of this. spring resting against a cap nut 43 engaged and locked by a set screw 43a in the inner end of the sleeve 38. In this way, the spring normally pushes the sleeve in the direction of engagement of its claws with those of exhibit 19.
Support 34 is bell-shaped and comprises an outwardly facing radial flange 44 at the mouth of the support into which a support ring 45 fits. This ring is held in place by bolts 46 and nuts 47 arranged in a circle. In three positions 1200 apart, the support ring comprises pairs of cheeks 48 directed axially. A regulator member 49 approximately in the form of an angled lever is pivotally supported between the cheeks of each pair.
Fig. 3 shows that each element 49 is supported by a pivot 50, the ends of which extend beyond the cheeks 48, the pivot having collars which engage in open slots 51 formed in a retaining member 52 in the form of of U (fig. 3) included in the support 34.
Each element 49 comprises an arm 53 with centrifugal action and an arm 54 which engages, when the shaft 28 reaches a determined speed during the starting provided by the starter motor, an external radial flange 55 on the sleeve 38, to apply to the latter an axial force in the direction of disengagement of the clutch claws. Note that until the governor elements disengage the clutch, a second radial flange 56 on the outside of the sleeve engages a cooperating portion of the support ring 45 to prevent the spring 42 from over-engaging. the clutch claws tightly.
The clutch claws of the part 19 and of the sleeve 38 are shown in FIG. 2, the two sets of claws having the same shape. These holes are slightly notched at the base on the drive transmitting face 57 and have an opposing face 58 the angle of which is chosen to facilitate clearance when the shaft 28 of the starter motor rotates faster than the starter motor. start: In operation, the starter motor accelerates the shaft 28 of the motor to be started by the fact that the claw clutch is normally kept engaged by the spring 42.
When the shaft 28 reaches a determined speed which is somewhat lower than the maximum speed of the clutch part 19 of the starter motor, the weight of the arms 53 of the regulating elements develops sufficient centrifugal force to overcome the spring force. , without the sleeve being removed, however, due to the size of the claws. When the cranking motor spins by itself and its speed increases to exceed that of the starter motor clutch part, the effect of this size becomes negligible and centrifugal force can compress the spring and remove the sleeve. to disengage the clutch.
