<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Automatic centrifugal regulator with ignition advance for
Internal combustion daters
The invention relates to a centrifugal regulator for ignition devices which, by means of weights, varies the moment of ignition as a function of the rotational speed of the engine. In a known construction, the return spring is attached to one side at a point on the. support plate integral with one half of the shaft, and on the other side at a point of an arm assembled to the cam integral with the other half of the shaft; this last point is at such a distance from the axis of the cam that it travels a sufficient path to tension the spring.
The spring being stretched only in a straight line, the diagram of its return power depends, apart from the spring constant, only on its elongation
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to the extension, corresponding to the advance angle of the cam.
The curves indicating the return power as a function of the angle of advance of the cam therefore have the same character. The possibility of influencing the shape of the curve of the advance of the cam is thus greatly limited. It is, in particular, impossible to obtain a very rapid increase at the start of the feed, followed by a small constant increase. The present invention makes it possible to remedy to a large extent the aforementioned drawbacks, owing to the fact that the return springs are engaged, in a manner known per se, substantially transversely to their longitudinal axis, by arms rigidly connected to one of the halves of the regulator. .
The appended drawing represents two exemplary embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of a regulator pl
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same regulator at repo
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same regulator in activity.
Fig. 4 is a view of another embodiment.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a spring adjuster.
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the device according to FIG. 5.
The motor shaft 1 carries a collar 2 to which the regulator support plate 3 is assembled. Around the extension 4 of the motor shaft can rotate the regulating sleeve 5 carrying the cam 6. The fingers 7 and the arms 8 are rigidly connected to the cam. The fingers 7 engage in the notches 9 of the weights 10 which can turn around the pivots 11 carried by the plate 3 and which slide, to reduce the friction.

ment, on ribs 30 and 31. The return springs 12 are tensioned between the pins 13 also fixed on the plate 3 and the points 14 of the plate 8, these points being close to the axis of the cam. The ribs 15 of the arms 8 have a determined curvature over which the springs 12 are stretched, in the active position.
The second embodiment differs from that which has just been described only in that the weights 10 comprise arms 16 acting on two arms 17 integral with the cam, so that as the weight increases. engine speed the lever arm of the weights increases, while that of the cam decreases. This achieves the result that at a high rotational speed the return spring is less stressed than in the first example.
The operation of the regulator is clear from Figs. 2 and 3, but it should be noted that thanks to the profile of the contact faces of the arms 16 and 17 and to that of the sides 15 of the plate 8, it becomes possible to influence the advance of the cam to a large extent. Only one example among the many possible advance or adjustment modes will be specifically described. In order to obtain an initially rapid increase in feed rate from the start, the spring 12 is arranged in such a way that it does not come into contact with the side 15 until after a certain advance of the cam.
If, furthermore, this side 15 is profiled in such a way that it begins to touch the spring in about the middle, the action of the spring will increase rapidly from this moment, because at a determined angle of the the advance of the cam corresponds to a strong deflection of the spring by the plate 8, then because the lever arm engaged by the spring is large, and because
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
that the component of the spring tension increases rapidly Therefore, from the moment of contact between the plate 8 and the spring, the advance of the cam for a same increase in the speed of the motor will be appreciably less than at the start of the advance.
The tension imposed on the spring at the start of the advance as a result of the displacement of its attachment point 14 is insignificant, because this point only travels a very short path; due to its small distance from the axis of the cam.
For easy adjustment of the return springs, the pins 19 from which they are suspended are fixed to a bezel 20 which can pivot around the collar 2, which is screwed onto the support plate 3 by means of two screws 21 and can be offset with respect to this plate by means of an eccentric screw 22.
