<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING THE ADDITIONAL AIR INTAKE TO INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES.
The invention relates to a device for adjusting the intake of additional air to internal combustion engines provided with a suction tube comprising, apart from a main air intake which for adjusting the power deployed by the engine is adjustable by means of a valve or the like usually constituted, in carbureted engines, by the ordinary gas butterfly valve of the carburetor, an additional air intake, opening inside said valve and provided a regulating valve which opens automatically under the influence of the underpressure in the suction tube against the action of a load varying in force depending on the movements of the regulating valve
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
power, so that this load, for a certain increase in the under-pressure in the suction tube,
allows the additional air valve to open more at a higher degree of opening of the power control valve than at a lower value of said degree of opening.
The invention essentially consists in that the variable load exerted on the additional air valve is produced by a pendulum-shaped weight, this weight being suspended in such a way from an arm which is movable depending on the movement of the power control valve. , that said weight can oscillate relative to a lever pressing against it under the influence of the force which acts on the additional air valve in the direction of its opening, so that the movement of said arm of suspension in the direction corresponding to an increase in the opening of the power control valve has the effect of reducing the force exerted by the pendulum weight on the lever which rests against it as long as said lever remains in the same position, and that the pendulum weight,
when the force acting on the additional air valve in the direction of its opening exceeds the force exerted by the pendulum weight on the lever pressing against it, yields while increasing the said force, until the state of equilibrium is reached.
This device for applying a load to the additional air valve has an important advantage. A spring, the elasticity of which is adjustable depending on the setting of the gas valve, as previously proposed, is difficult to calculate exactly.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
from the point of view of its elasticity, since it is dependent on factors which are difficult to determine such as soaking, shape, fixing and the like. On the other hand, a pendulum-shaped weight is easy to calculate exactly and moreover does not deteriorate over time as for example under the effect of fatigue phenomena in the material, which on the other hand is the case with a spring.
By using a weight, moreover results have been obtained which it was not possible to obtain with a spring. With the additional air adjustment device according to the present invention, a greater saving in average fuel consumption, which further depends on the fact that the device according to the invention allows simpler and more exact adjustment.
Other characteristic features of the invention will emerge from the following description in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings which show two different embodiments.
Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through one of the embodiments of the additional air regulator and its connection to the carburetor.
Fig. 2 shows a section perpendicular to that of FIG. l with the pendulum weight removed.
Fig. 3 shows the device according to the invention in elevation with the air filter and pendulum weight removed.
Fig. 4 and 5 each show one of two mutually perpendicular sections of a second embodiment in which the adjuster for the additional air intake forms a building unit with the carburetor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the drawing the additional air valve is designated by 1. In the embodiment according to figs. 1 - 3 it is arranged in a valve housing 2, which by an intermediate seal 3 is connected to the suction tube 4 of the engine in the immediate vicinity of the carburetor, which is provided with the gas butterfly valve 6. The valve 1 is by means of a rod 7 provided with a loop at its upper end suspended from an arm of an angled lever 8, the end of which is formed in a hook for this purpose. The angled lever 8 is carried on a pivot 9 and at the end of the other arm provided with a wheel, with which it rests on a pendulum-shaped weight 11. In FIG. 3 this weight is indicated in mixed lines.
It has the shape of a disc suspended at an eccentric point from a pivot 12 on an arm 13 which is fixed on a pin 14 carried in a removable part 2a of the casing 2. On the end of the pin 14 which protrudes at outside the housing is fixed an arm 15, which by means of a ball joint 16 adjustable in different positions along the arm 15 and an articulation rod 17 of adjustable length is connected to an arm 6 fixed on the throttle shaft 6.
In fig. 1 the gas butterfly valve 6 and the additional air valve 1 are fully closed.
In this case the caster 10 rests on the pendulum disc 11 at a point placed at a very short distance below the suspension pivot 12, so that the pendulum disc acts with the maximum force on the angled lever. 8. When the gas butterfly valve 6 is rotated in the direction of its opening, the shaft 14 and the arm 13 are rotated in the direction of clockwise, seen
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
in fig. 1 and 3 and the suspension pivot 12 is thereby moved upwards away from the caster 10, so that the force with which the pendulum weight acts on the angled lever 8 which rests on it, decreases . When the gas butterfly valve 6 is rotated to the fully open position, the arm 13 assumes the position shown for example in FIG. 3.
When a force arises which acts on the valve 1 in the direction of its opening and which overcomes the force with which the pendulum disc acts on the arm 8, the pendulum disc will yield, regardless of the position of the arm 13 within the limits data, while the last named force will increase, until a state of equilibrium is reached.
Not only the axis 14, but also the pivot 9 which carries the lever 8 is carried in the removable part 2a of the housing 2. The joints between the latter and the removable part have the form of rotating surfaces (cylindrical surfaces) of which the common axis is parallel to the axis 14 and to the pivot 12, so that the removable part is adjustable with respect to the housing 2 by pivoting about this axis. The removable part 2a, the circumference wall of which preferably has the shape of a half cylinder and the sides of which preferably have the shape of solid circles, is held in place by a flange 20 stretched around it, one the ends of this flange being fixed to the casing by a rivet 21 and the other end being similarly fixed to an eye, which can be tightened using a screw 22 screwed into the casing 2.
One of the circular faces of the removable part is provided with a central opening surrounded by a neck 23, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
which an air filter '24 is inserted. Additional air enters the crankcase through this filter.
The adjustment of the additional air valve is carried out by rotating part 2a, preferably with the aid of a special tool indicated in broken lines at 25 in fig. 3. This tool has the form of a lever provided at one of its ends with two fingers projecting laterally and which (when the air filter is removed), can be engaged one in a cell 26 in the outer edge. of the neck 23 and the other in a cell or a hole 27 in the housing 2. By rotating the lever 25 the removable part 2a can easily be adjusted with great precision and sensitivity. During such an adjustment the tension screw 22 of the flange must only be loosened a little, so that part 2a can only be rotated under friction between it and the flange 20, which forms as a brake tape.
To determine the correct adjustment it must be observed that if the arm of the suspension lever 13 is of length equal to the distance between the center of the circular pendulum weight and its point of suspension and that the axis of rotation of the arm 13 and the center of the pendulum disc coincide, a rotation of the arm 13 within the given limits, when the valve 1 is fully closed, does not give rise to a raising or lowering of the disc - pendulum 11, which means that the latter takes a position centered with respect to axis 14 and rotates around its own center. When after such an adjustment the screw 22 is tightened to fix the removable part 2a, this causes practically no change in the adjusted position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
During an overhaul of the device a subsequent adjustment for wear compensation can of course be carried out in the same way.
To remove the removable part 2a, you do not need to completely remove the screw 22 from its threaded hole in the housing 2, because it suffices to loosen it enough so that the flange can be folded to the side with the fixing rivets. as pivots to allow part 2a to be removed. The removable part 2a is reversible, that is to say that it can be put in place so that the air filter is either on the right side or on the left side, depending on the most favorable location in view of the space available when installing the device in motors of a different type.
During such a reversal, the axis 14 is transferred from one to the other of two random spots formed in the side opposite to that which carries the air filter, the hole not used, in the case of FIGS. 1-3 the bore 28, is preferably plugged with an oil-soaked felt pad. During the overturning, the pivot 9 of the lever 8 is also transferred from one to the other of two holes made for this purpose, of which the one which is not currently in use is designated by 29 in FIG. 1.
The inherent inertia of the pendular weight also has certain advantageous effects. When the gas butterfly valve 6 is opened rapidly, the underpressure, under the influence of which the valve 1 opens, does not decrease with the same rapidity as that with which the change of position of the arm 15 takes place which is directly resulting from the movement of the gas butterfly 6 and which gives
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
This results in a decrease in the force with which the pendulum weight acts on lever 8.
Thanks to the inertia of the pendulum weight, this phenomenon does not cause the undesirable effect that the valve performs a rapid opening movement followed by a return movement in the direction of closing, as is the case during the use of springs, The inertia of the pendulum weight has the further advantage of acting in a compensating direction, so that the additional air valve cannot vibrate, which in turn gives rise to to a reduction in wear. Finally, the inertia of the pendulum weight can be used in an automobile engine to effect a relative decrease in additional air intake during acceleration and 1 climb and to increase the relative additional air intake during acceleration. braking and descent.
For this purpose, it suffices quite simply to mount the device with an additional air intake valve so that the removable part 2a is directed towards the front.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 where the housing 30 of the additional air valve is integrally constructed with the carburetor housing, the pendulum weight is pivoted on the end of an arm which is attached directly to the end of the throttle shaft 6 of the carburetor protruding into the casing 30. In fig. 4 and 5 the flap 6 and the additional air valve are shown in their fully open position. When the valve 6 is turned in the direction of its closing, the arm 31 turns clockwise (seen in fig, 5) and for an unaltered position of the valve 1 the force with
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
which the pendular weight acts on the lever 8 which presses against it increases.
This force also increases when the valve 1 for an unaltered position of the arm 31 moves in the direction of its opening. The relationship between this increase in said force and the movement of the valve 1 can be adapted by appropriate choice of the position of the pivot. 9 relative to the axis of rotation of the arm 31 as well as by appropriate choice of the lengths of said arm. and the arms of the lever 8 and possibly also by an appropriate curvature of the surface of the pendulum weight which cooperates with the wheel 10. In the embodiment according to FIGS. 4 and 5 the seat 32 of the valve 1 is adjustable in the casing 30. This is connected to the carburetor casing on the one hand at the top outside the jet 33 and on the other hand at the bottom inside the butterfly valve gas 6.
It should be noted that the device for adjusting the additional air intake according to the invention allows a simpler construction of the carburetor owing to the fact that the requirements concerning the accuracy, with which the latter as such proportion the quantity of fuel by compared to the quantity of air passing over the nozzle, can be reduced.
It is obvious that the invention is not restricted to the described embodiments only for the understanding, many alterations being able to be carried out within the framework of protection.
