Process for the production of a new phthalocyanine derivative. The present invention relates to a process for the production of a new metal phthalocyanine derivative, which is characterized in that gupf ertetra-4- (p-nitrobenzoyl) -phthalocyanine is reduced to the corresponding copper-tetra-4- (p-aminobenzoyl) phthalocyanine .
The copper tetra-4- (p-nitrobenzoyl) -phth.aIocyanän is made by heating 4- (p-nitrobenzoyl) -phthalic acid or the corresponding anhydride, amide or imide with urea and a copper-containing substance in the presence of a catalyst which is a substance which is an element of the 5th
or 6th group of the Periodic Table, contains and .an atomic weight between 15 and 23 or between 33 and 92, if necessary with the addition of boric acid, he hold.
The reduction can be carried out using common reducing agents such as sodium hydrosulfide, stannous chloride or sodium hydrosulfite. The new compound is used as an intermediate for dyes; in particular, it can be diazotized and coupled with a suitable coupling component.
The new phthalocyanine derivative is a greenish-blue, solid product that is insoluble in water, but soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid to form a greenish solution.
Example: 125 parts of 4- (p-nitrobenzoyl) phthalic acid, 357 parts of urea, 20 parts of anhydrous copper chloride, 7.5 parts of ammonium molybdate and 1.5 parts of boric acid are mixed and finely powdered.
The mixture is added to 770 parts of o-dichlorobenzene and the whole is heated at 145 ° C. for 4 hours while stirring. Copper tetra-4- (p-nitrobenzoyl) phthalocyanine is obtained as a dark green suspension.
The mixture is filtered hot and the solid product is extracted with boiling alcohol. The crude copper - tetra - 4 - (p - nitrobenzoyl) - phtlualo cyanine is then extracted with boiling water, hot 2N hydrochloric acid, hot 2N ammonia, hot 2N sodium hydroxide solution and hot water.
The product is then dried and extracted with boiling acetone. The copper tetra-4- (p-nitrobenzoyl) phthalocyanine obtained in this way is dissolved in 550 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid at 5-10 C and the green solution is poured into 5500 parts of cold water.
The suspended copper tetra-4- (p-nitrobenzoyl) phthalocyanine is filtered off and the paste obtained is washed until it is free of acid and inorganic salts.
The copper-tetra-4- (p-nitrobenzoyl) phthalocyanine obtained in the form of an aqueous paste in the manner described above, which contains 22.8 parts of dry material, is ground and suspended in 243 parts of water. The reduction is now effected by slowly adding 34.8 parts of sodium hydrosulfide as a 30% strength aqueous solution.
The mixture is stirred for 5 hours, ground in a ball mill for 10 hours and then the copper tetra-4- @ p-aminobenzo \ 1) phthalocyanine is filtered off and washed until no more traces of alkali and sulfide can be detected are.
The product can then be dried, whereupon it is a greenish-blue, solid product; however, it is expediently stored in the form of an aqueous paste for diazotization purposes. The diazotization is easily effected by reacting hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite.
