Process for the preparation of a metallizable bisazo dye. It has been found that valuable metallizable dis- or polyazo dyes are formed when dyes of the general formula are used

where X and Y are identical or different aryl radicals with hydroxyl groups in the o-position to the azo bridges, and the aryl radicals are further substituents,
including azo residues, first converted into copper complexes using known processes and then decoppered using suitable means. It is known that the entry of complex-bound copper into dyes of the type described causes the alkyl groups to split. In contrast, it is not known that the removal of copper from such complexes yields identical or similar dyes to those which are obtainable directly from tetrazotized 3,3'-dioxy-4,4'-di-aminodiphenyl.
But because this latter base has a much weaker coupling energy than, for example, 3,3'-dimethoxy-4,4'-diaminodiphenyl, the present process enables the preparation of dyes which are made from 3,3'-dioxy-4,4 ' -diaminodiphenyl are difficult or impossible to produce.
The process also saves the laborious production of 3,3'-dioxy-4,4'-diamino-diphenyl from dianisidine by saponifying the methoxy groups with aluminum chloride or with potassium hydroxide under pressure.
Mineral or organic acids and salts, e.g. B. Sodium Sulfur. For example, some copper complexes can be decoppered particularly easily with concentrated hydrochloric acid, even at room temperature. The metal-free dyes obtained in this way can, if they are insoluble in hydrochloric acid, be separated off in a simple manner by filtration.
The present patent relates to a process for the production of a metallizable disazo dye and is characterized in that the copper complex of the dye from 1 mole of tetrazotized 8,3'-dimethoxy-4,4'-diaminodiphenyl and 2 moles of 1- amino 8-oxynaphthalene-2,4-disulfonic acid decoppered with concentrated hydrochloric acid. Example:
70 parts of the copper complex of the dye from 1 mole of tetrazotized U'-dimethoxy-4,4'-diaminodiphenyl and 2 moles of 1-amino-8-oxynaphthalene-2,4-disulfonic acid @verden in 150 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid for 1 hour stirred at room temperature. The copper-free dye is filtered off, washed first with concentrated hydrochloric acid, then with 20% strength brine and dried.
The metal-free dye gives the cell wool a blue coloration which, when treated with copper salts, turns into a lightfast greenish blue. The new dye is a dark brown powder that dissolves in water with a blue color and in concentrated sulfuric acid with a greenish-blue color. i
